LAGUNA HILLS (7-1, 2-1) VS. EL TORO (8-1, 3-0)
Where, when: Trabuco Hills High, Friday, 7 p.m.
TV: Cox3 (Saturday, 9:30 a.m.)
Outlook: It is difficult to discern if Laguna Hills was looking ahead to this game when the Hawks lost to Capistrano Valley, 35-34, in overtime last week. Maybe it was just that Capistrano Valley, improving markedly over recent weeks, finally put it together. Whatever, Laguna Hills will play the best team on its 2011 schedule in this game.
El Toro’s loss was to Huntington Beach on the opening Friday of the season. Since then, El Toro has won eight in a row – including an overtime victory over Capistrano Valley before having a bye last week.
Chargers quarterback Connor Manning is having a fabulous season. His 2,347 passing yards is second in the county, behind Northwood quarterback Ricky Baustista’s 2,603, and he leads the county in touchdown passes with 25. El Toro receiver Cody White has 49 receptions, and teammates Blake Murphy and Dominic Collins have 32 and 31 catches, respectively. Laguna Hills running back Alex Salera has been outstanding, rushing for 144 yards a game and 7 yards a carry. If El Toro can pass its way to an early lead and thus make Salera less of a factor, then the Chargers will take this one.
Winner: El Toro
