Orange Coast League
COSTA MESA (8-1, 4-0) VS. ESTANCIA (7-2, 4-0)
Where, when: Estancia High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: This is another county rivalry game in the winner acquires or retains possession of a bell. There are more bells that are football trophies than there are bells at Mission San Juan Capistrano. If they ring the bell for every point scored in this game, people will suffer hearing damage. Costa Mesa is averaging 58 points in league games, and Estancia is averaging 40.
Defensively, Estancia has the better number – five points a game allowed in league play, against the 17 points allowed a league game by Costa Mesa. Costa Mesa running back Mario Smith, the state football athlete of the week, running for 359 yards and seven touchdowns last week against Laguna Beach, is averaging 200 rushing yards a game and has scored 28 touchdowns. Estancia counters with Robert Murtha – 150 rushing yards a game, and 12 touchdowns. It is going to be a wild game, with the Orange Coast League championship on the line. The feeling here is that Costa Mesa’s big victory over Laguna Beach gives the Mustangs a bit more momentum coming into this game.
Winner: Costa Mesa
