Pacific Coast League
BECKMAN (7-2, 4-0) VS. CORONA DEL MAR (8-1, 4-0)
Where, when: Newport Harbor High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: The Pacific Coast League has been a very tight league, but Beckman and Corona del Mar managed to separate themselves from the pack. Corona del Mar has the most impressive victory of any league team, with its 28-21 triumph over Huntington Beach on Sept. 9. Corona del Mar’s loss was to another Sunset League team, Newport Harbor.
Beckman’s losses were to higher-division teams, Foothill and Tustin. Beckman running back Jeff Kim missed a couple of games, but has made up for lost time with a string of excellent efforts including 133 yards and two touchdowns last week in the Patriots’ 31-7 victory over Irvine. That got Beckman the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, which goes to the city of Irvine’s best high school football team, but the bigger trophy is the PCL championship. Corona del Mar has been the best team in the league and in the Southern Division all season. Running back Erik Fisher has been productive – 123 yards a game – and quarterback Brent Lawson has been equally important, completing 59 percent of his passes for 209 yards a game and a splendid touchdowns-to-interceptions ratio of 20 to 6. If Corona del Mar can keep Kim from breaking those long runs for which he has a penchant, then Corona del Mar wins the PCL crown.
Winner: Corona del Mar
