One of our staff members heard someone talking about John Barnes’ retirement at Los Alamitos and suggested we check it out. Seeing how Barnes is Orange County’s all-time football coaching victories leader, it seemed like a good idea.
It turns out that Barnes indeed retired at the end of the school year … from teaching, not coaching the Griffins.
“It was time, but I told them I’d only do it if I could keep coaching,” Barnes said Thursday after running his summer camp. “They said I could coach as long as I want.”
Barnes, who most recently taught physical education, said he doesn’t plan to leave the sideline anytime soon.

The Griffins football program have accomplished a great deal of success under coach Barnes. I hope he matched that success in the classroom as a teacher.
I’m sure he doesn’t want to leave coaching with not winning a play-off game in 6 years. He should have another good team this year, and could very wel make a play-off run beyond the first round, now that he can just focus on coaching. Good luck.
BTW, a strong program like Los Al scheduling pansies like West Adams Prep and University (of L.A.)? Puuhlease…
LA trys to schedule quality opponents in the preseason but gets turned down. Jordan, Milikin, Wilson……why would they be any better? LA has budget issues for travle and can travel that far.Valley Center backed out of the contract to play this year. Solid program that was ranked #1 in the state for D3. Thats is not Barnes fault.
Part of that is the legacy of the program, that schools do not want to play. The QB is returning, along with a solid RB and WR’s that will be dangerous. The other part is Barnes trying to pad his wins. university of LA is a joke but the is it.
West Adams is a decent program with good kids. they will probaly be a 5-5 or 6-4 team this year
LosAl is due. Coach Barnes is due. This year’s team will make the playoff run and take that monkey off their back! Great program!
John Barnes was a great coach in the 90′s. Time has not past him by. He places players in the NFL every year, but still under performs based on the talent he has. He should have won 2-3 CIF and 1 State Championship in the last 5 years. Los Al is on the brink of losing their football program. I hope John “Joe Paterno” Barnes retires from coaching before it’s too late.
He would have if he didnt quit at SERVITE..
go call barnes
How/why is Los Al on the brink of losing their Football Program??
Randy- LA underperformers……once the playoffs start. That is too bad……to say the program is on the brink of folding is not true. Funds are suficent, and prgrams to raise funds are working. I am surprised to here this?
They should do well in the pre.season and hopefully that will get them prepared for the next part & then it’s playoffs
Still don’t see them winning CIF in this Division at least not this year.
LA may make the playoffs this year.
Mission, Servite, OLU, Santa Margerita, Poly, Lakewood, Amat have a better chance of winning CIF than LA
Just because people are commenting on this topic, servite has informed new coach that he has got the job. Baseball
credo
Coach Barnes has done a Phenomenal Job. It’s time to pass the Ball to his Son. I hope he touched as many lives in the Physical Education Dept. as he did on the Football Field. Good Luck Coach!
I played under Coach Barnes in the late 80′s. In fact, we were his first team that went to the CIF Finals and lost against El Toro. Coach Barnes and his staff even back then were the best around. I can’t see Los Al football going under any time soon. When you have a coach like him and many former players, there is no way they will go under. I moved to Texas years ago and I still keep up with how my old coach and team are doing and I still track some of his old players. Regarding scheduling pansies, did you ever play football or any team sport? If you haven’t, the best way to get your teams moral up is to win a few games, even if it is a ‘pansy’ team. Way to go Coach Barnes. Now that you don’t teach any longer you can focus on winning another CIF Championship!!!!
