Football: Mater Dei falls in finals of Air Strike tournament (updated)

June 11th, 2011, 5:31 pm · · posted by

Note: Ryan McMahon’s grade has been corrected on this post.

Mater Dei’s football team and some of its up-and-coming players reached the finals of the Air Strike passing tournament Saturday but fell to Long Beach Poly, 21-14, at Dana Hills.

The Monarchs were led by junior-to-be quarterback Ryan McMahon, who showed a good arm and the ability to connect with several receivers.

Poly sealed the victory with an interception but McMahon had an excellent day.

The player who jumped out the most for Mater Dei might have have been wide out/outside linebacker Thomas Duarte (6-3, 225). The junior-to-be is a big guy who can move. A few times, Duarte lined up on offense next to Josh Cook (6-4, 235), so McMahon has some very big targets.

Mater Dei receiver Jameson Field also had a big day.

In the semifinals,

Mater Dei defeated Los Alamitos, 31-19, while Long Beach Poly edged Edison.

“Dan the Man” I’m glad you showed up .So did Servite and Carson taking notes…Amazing kids huh! I really like the size of the hearts of the “New Monarchs”. I also, will predict another “Championship” this year which will include MD & POLY….Only you will be the first to write about it…HaHa!!!! I wish! See you around. .

McMahon is a sophomore and is going to be a junior in the fall not a senoir

  • Dan Albano says:

Thanx for the catch Neil – I have made that fix — McMahon showed a lot of promise today

  • UHWarrior says:

Amazing how well MD did in this tournament. McMahon was literally non-existent on last years monarch team. Where does MD find these guys?

The OC was well represented in the later rounds. The OC teams bounced those teams from the valley and inland empire early.

I should have given the Jack Rabbits more credit since they did return their QB and top 3 receivers from last years play-off team. I just thought the OC teams were better. What happened to SC?

I still stand by my early pick of Edison having a loaded squad. They made it to the semi-finals WITHOUT their best QB in Chase Favreau.

Don’t forget to note that Poly did it without their two top receivers..

You know one thing I’ve learned about the OC teams. The fact is that, it is High School and these are phenominal athletes here in the SoCal area. They love the game called “Football” and will always suprise you from year to year. Thank these young gladiators who never give up…I see now why Tom Lemming chooses Cali as the most productive location for College Recruiters. May they be safe and competitive going into this season.
Now as far as Chase Favreau from Edison , I think he’s a competitor but, the kid comes out every year hurt just like Sedric Hill. I wish him a fast recovery. I dont think Chase is as good as the back up…If you sit back and realize the kids on the Edison team are MD kids. MD trains them and Edison well ends up with them.Go Figure! The back up for Chase is much better QB and from MD also….. Young too!

  • UHWarrior says:

Yes, Trinity, I agree that So. Cal is a hotbed for HS football talent. Especially, OC HS football.

Alot of what I wrote in other blogs regarding this tournament and predictions were based on last years results and returning players. But every year there are kids who come out of wood work and turn out to be “game changers”. McMahon at MD maybe one of them.

Torgersen is the future for Edison, but Favreau is the Chargers “game changer” now. I saw him play twice last year in person and he has a strong, accurate arm, and was very mobile in the pocket. alot of upside in his game. In fact, I felt that Edison’s record should have been better by 1 or 2 games, because Edison’s receivers dropped crucial passes throughout the year, no fault of Chase.

    • TRINITY says:

Well I agree with 99% of what your saying except I dont see Chase as a game changer. And as far as mobility, no way he can move in or out of the pocket. He’s flat footed and has no latteral balance. He stands straight up when he runs and is always looking for the long ball. Just observation!! UHWarrior. But good spirit…..

      • UHWarrior says:

        Trinity,

Chase led his team in rushing in several games last year. That’s not mobility? As for the long ball. Edison receivers were open for the “long ball”. Last year I saw at least 3 TD passes dropped by Edison receivers (each would have changed outlook of the game). I’m not saying he didn’t make mistakes, but IMO he’s a good QB, and wouldn’t want to play against him.

The Sunset league is going to be brutal this year. Edison will need an experienced , proven leader this season, and that guy is Favreau. Torgersen will get his reps. But if the game is on the line I’m going with experience.

        • TRINITY says:

Edison will not survive the Trinity league teams in Pac-5 , I dont beleive this year once again. They didnt last year or the year before.Coach White made a statement at the begining of this year stating that, his team has no business being in this conference. He also, stated they should step down. That was Coach White (as I remember). Please correct me! Chase did try to run against the Monarchs last year and was demolished! To say it in a nice way “Servite”did the same. I would not want to be in his cleats this year….Everytime I hear a comment about Edison,” I think of the last two seasons” when there was allot of denial. I remember nothing but, excuses when Servite ran over them in the rain two years ago. Duh! Rain is part of the game , ask Servite! Anyway have fun my freind! Let the games begin………..OC Football is Real /////The West is the Best in the Nation.I think….

  • Jeff says:

“chris” my son played with Sedric for several years (including pop warner)… I’m not sure who you were watching but the kid was and is a hellava player.

He went both ways at Airstrike and dominated several games, as far as being afraid to go across the middle… well should we believe you or the tape?…

    • TRINITY says:

Sorry, but he wont have that line this year and he “Chase ” will be running for his life . Sedric will get hit this year. Good Luck though! Its not going to be a cup of tea for anyone this year….OC Football is real!
