Northwood shortstop Justin Gisch was at practice Wednesday feeling optimistic about the future and pretty good about the present.
Gisch announced Tuesday he had committed to play at Santa Clara University next year. Tuesday, he and his Northwood teammates captured a 4-2 victory over Beckman, their sixth in a row in PCL play.
Gisch will officially sign his letter on Thursday along with five other Northwood athletes during a ceremony at Northwood.
“I took an unofficial visit over the summer and I really liked it so I can could see myself going there so I was excited when they called and said they had a roster spot for me,” Gisch said Wednesday. “When I visited it, I really liked it. I felt, if it came up, it was the right place to go.”
UC San Diego also showed an interest in Gisch, who has been a member of the Northwood squad for four years. He was also a standout football player for Northwood.
“I think it’s great for him because from the moment he stepped into the program, we recognized that he had the ability to play at the Division 1 level,” said Northwood Coach Rob Stuart. “He’s had to battle through some adversity and played a couple different positions.”
Gisch is batting .350 this season and batted .402 last year, earning All-Sea View League first team honors.
“He will walk away as the career leader in almost every offensive category,” Stuart said.
