Tesoro posted its second consecutive victory against No. 6 Foothill, beating the Knights by five strokes on Thursday at Tustin Ranch Golf Course.

But Tesoro coach Van Johnstone was quick to put this 206-211 victory in perspective.

“We are not as good as we were in the past,” he said. “I mean a 206 … that would be an embarrassment for us.  We aren’t going to win a lot of matches shooting 206 and taking 45′s.”

But at least the Titans are headed in the right direction. They are 2-0, and Thursday’s round was a season-best for them, beating their previous best by one stroke.

On Tuesday, they edged the Knights, 207-208, on the South Course at Coto de Caza.

Johnstone thinks his team will eventually break 200, saying the Titans are “very solid through the No. 4 spot.” Joe Kron and Kelby Scharmann are among those players, and they both shared medalist honors with Foothill’s Max Holden. All three players shot a 2-over 38 on the front nine.

This was the second day in a row that Holden has posted the low round. He shot an even-par 36 at Tustin Ranch to help the Knights beat Northwood on Wednesday.

The slightly higher than normal scores for the Titans, he said, is a result of some early season jitters, and some three-putts.

“Right now we are as good as our five and six. That is where we have to get better,” Johnstone said. “We are working on it and we will get through it.”

Foothill coach Eric Horve knows exactly how Johnstone feels. The Knights, he said, are also not playing up to their potential right now.

“It is nice that we have nonleague matches. We have got to get some kinks out,” Horve said. “They are good, but they are rusty. Hopefully, when they count, they are ready to go.”
