The intense recruiting battle for Servite All-County lineman Troy Niklas (6-6, 245) is down to USC and Notre Dame, with just days left until National Signing Day on Feb. 2.
Niklas also had Stanford in his final three choices of schools, but there is a new development with the Cardinal.
The senior said Thursday that he wasn’t accepted at Stanford.
“That’s life, I guess,” Niklas said. “It was definitely a little disapponting because I work really hard. I have like a 3.7 (grade-point average).”
On Friday morning, Niklas heads to South Bend to visit Notre Dame. He will not play for Servite’s basketball team Friday because of the trip.
“I’m looking for a fun trip,” Niklas said of Notre Dame. “(I) get to check out the school. I haven’t really been up there in the winter, so it’s going to be interesting. I think it’s going to be snowing.”
Last weekend, Niklas visited USC.
“It was really good,” he said of his visit. “The part I liked about it the best was the coaching staff.”
Notre Dame and USC are recruiting Niklas as a defensive end. Stanford recruited Niklas as a tight end.
Niklas said he will announce his decision on National Signing Day.

oh for god’s sake, don’t go to USC!
Notre Dame is rising. USC is declining. GO IRISH!!!
No your wrong SC is on the rise, And you will see that on Oct. 22nd as Robert Woods and George Farmer are repeatedly hitting the end zone
How can usc be on the rise. They were at the top and now have been declining each of the past 2 years. They have a couple of elite recruits, but before the whole team was full of them.I wouldn’t look for the same teams that Pete the cheat had, they’re not nearly as talented and no where even close to as well coached.
Notre Dame is the better school (especially for student-athletes), and I’m sure Troy Niklas is interested in playing in a bowl game sooner rather than later.
Notre Dame can not win a BCS bowl game with a tough team. They only play 2 or 3 team that are any good in 2011. I predict a good bowl game for them where they get blow out. SC will be back winning a BCS bowl in 2012.
Be careful what you say. ND killed THE U, in the Sun Bowl this year. 31-17. Facts!
USC cheated, got caught, and is now just beginning to serve their well deserved sentence by the NCAA. Why would any premier student/athletes want to join that group and be labeled a cheater for the rest of their lives? USC is not going to win any bowl games in the next few years – with the 15 scholarship limit for the next 3 year they will be struggling mightily. Go to ND and help them win a national championship in the next few years.
OTW, you need to improve on your ability to predict and further your education on schedule strength.
Go with the Irish Niklas…with the two schools you’ve narrowed down to…it’s the only choice left that’s a 40-year decision rather than the 4-year decision USC represents.
you ND homers are way off on education, USC is one of the top schools in the nation for academics. Stay near your home and go to USC. You’ll get much better coaching and nothing better than being backed by USC alumni.
I am a huge SC fan, but I do believe that ND is closer to getting to the top than SC. Brian Kelly will get it done at ND. They will be better this coming year, but will battle for the National Championship in (2) years.
those SC alumni are probably good for a 6-figure salary!
I am with fbFan,for Gods sake don’t go to USC. When was the last time a sevite player did USC any good ?
I believe Chris Galippo had an interception against Ohio State, not to mention some great seaons oin the past, and ahead of him.
The Kalil brothers are studs, one is the startng guard, the other is playing for the Carolina Panthers. The only one without success was DJ SHoemate, because he didnt play. How can you even ask that question?
wow so it would suck to leave USC with a degree and make six figures, that sounds terrible. USC will still bring in a huge class this year which will help the numbers game. I believe the Khalil brothers did pretty good for USC. Galippo has been injury prone and of late Shoemate was the only other prospect and he did well leaving to Connecticut. ND is down and will be down for a long time. They get a few good recruits and nothing more. If you want to play on an aging over the hill team you go to ND all they have left is there memoires of being a great program nothing more
