In girls water polo Friday:
No. 3 Newport Harbor 10, No. 5 Foothill 6: Reserve Elissia Schilling scored three goals and goalie Sarah Wilkey made 10 saves to help lead the host Sailors (2-0), which played without Coach Bill Barnett (back issue).
Schilling, a sophomore, scored twice on the power play as Newport Harbor went 5 for 8 with the extra attacker.
Sophie Leveque and Kailyn Obenauer each added two goals for Newport Harbor.
Jessie Porter scored three goals for Foothill (1-3), which went 3 for 6 on the power play.
In the Villa Park Classic:
No. 1 Los Alamitos 9, Mater Dei 2: Rachel Fattal scored three goals and Savanna Smith made eight saves at Savanna to lead the Griffins (5-0) into the Saturday’s 10 a.m. semifinal against Montebello at Villa Park. Montebello edged San Clemente, 8-7, on a buzzer-beating lob at Huntington Beach.
El Toro 7, The Bishop’s 5: Justine Morgan had one goal and four assists and goalie Emily Browning made 10 saves as the host Chargers (4-0) upset third-seeded The Bishop’s to reach Saturday’s 11 a.m. semifinal against Agoura at Villa Park.
Foothill has some very good individual players, but they do not play very well as a team. Bit of Kobe Bryant syndrome where they shoot whenever they get the ball – instead of working the offense. Will be interesting to see if Colton can get things ironed out later in the season.
