All-CIF: Southern Section downsizes awards program

December 7th, 2010, 9:30 am · · posted by

If you check out the recently posted All-CIF teams in boys water polo, you might notice some big changes. And the changes weren’t just for boys water polo. They will used for all sports for the All-CIF awards, one of the highlights of each high school season.

What is new?

The section is now releasing only first-team All-CIF for each division. Second or third-team All-CIF for each division will not be recognized by the section. The number of athletes on each first team represents a doubling of the number of players needed to field a team.

For water polo, for example, it’s 7 players  vs. 7 players in games, so the first-team All-CIF team features 14 players.

In 2009, the first-team All-CIF boys water polo also had 14 players.

Coaches may select second and third teams, which I understand the boys water polo coaches did this year, but the CIF will not be releasing them or providing certificates for those awards, said Thom Simmons, the section’s spokesman.

On OCVarsity, we have published the second and third teams for Division 1 and will track down as many of the others as we can.

What else is new?

No more co-players of the year or co-coaches of the year. Divisions will have a single player of the year and single coach of the year, which is a break from past seasons.

Last season in boys water polo, El Toro’s Nick Rascon (now at Long Beach State) and Russell Renteria – “the R & R boys” as they became to be known as – were co-Division 1 players of the year. Division 3 boys water polo also had co-players of the year.

In football last year, Tustin’s Anthony Wilkerson (now at Stanford) and La Habra’s Josh Quezada (now at BYU) were co-offensive players of the year in the Southwest Division.

Why are the changes being made?

“Costly mainly,” Simmons said in a e-mail.

The Southern Section receives funding from the LA84 foundation each year for the costs associated with providing the All-CIF certificates. Cost includes printing, award folders, mailing and labor, Simmons said.

“Over the past 10 years we have seen the costs of producing those certificates not match the amount of money the LA84 Foundation is able to provide … (to the tune of a couple thousand dollars or more difference),” Simmons wrote. “That is compounded by misspellings and list mistakes which require replacement certificates.

“Part of those increased costs can be attributed to the increase in divisions but we have also seen an increase (across the board) in the number of players selected for the teams, including multiple players and coaches of the year.”

The section also was moved to “truly recognize” the best of the best, Simmons said.

    misspellings and list mistakes
The funniest thing is for mispelled words when it comes to academics.
Perhaps the schools should be contacted ahead of time to verify name spellings of a couple of players so as to not tip off anyone.

Thanks for playing and making the CIF alot of money – we have no money to give you a $1 certificate since we would have to spend $200 to stick it in a envelope and send it to you.

  • Big Picture Observer says:

I completely agree with MDHS 1985, this is a tragedy that CIF can’t afford a few bucks to provide All CIF certificates to those boys who have worked so hard and will keep this for the rest of their lives – I am sure affected parents would pay if need be- How come Leagues still recognize and provide certificates for Second and Third Team recogniitions

  • OC Fan says:

While I do not disagree with the comments above, if you look at the D1 first team selections, the two teams playing in finals get six of the the fourteen players (44%), the semi-final teams get four of the fourteen (28%) and the remaining four go the the quarter final teams (28%). To keep it in perspective, this is truly a CIF Playoff selection team not a team selected based on performance througout the entire season. Granted most of these kids would have been selected either way but not all of them.

  • John Kulisich says:

There is good news for boys water polo on the CIF issue for second and third team players. The Kalos Kagathos banquet in January has for years been recognizing all three teams for all seven divisions with certificates. As organizer of the banquet. I again will have these certificates for all those at the banquet. There will also be CIF
patches for these players. This is the only way those players will be recognized and I’m proud to honor all these players for their efforts throughout the season. My e-mail is kklubber@aol.com to get more information on the banquet. This year is the 22nd annual banquet honoring the best high school boys water polo players in the CIF Southern Section.

  • John Kulisich says:

The cost for the banquet is $36.00, which includes Mrs. Knott’s chicken dinner, the CIF SS certificates, CIF SS patches. The fourteen CIF SS finalist team members and coaches will also receive custom belt buckles. It is Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at Knotts’ Berry Farm Resort Hotel in Buena Park.

  • Big Picture Observer says:

John, I knew of your banquet, I did not know that you would be providing certificates and patches as well, thank you for your work on this and honoring these athletes

  • Evanleigh says:

I completely support this move. Why do we need a 2nd and 3rd team? So Johnny can feel good about himself? This is not AYSO where everybody gets a trophy! This is All-CIF!!! It’s silly to give awards to nearly 300 players in a sport with less than 300 teams even competing in it!

    • wpobserver says:

Not arguing that point, but should the majority of the first team selections only be from playoff teams finishing top 4?

  • 123polo says:

Will CIF send out an letter inviting those players to the dinner? Last year many players didnt know about it.

  • Polofan says:

Does anyone know when the all league teams are going to be put up?

  • vbnut says:

Where does a player that earned All CIF recognition get their certificate?

  • LOL says:

Haha, spot on, what if all the shools decided to say screw CIF and not pay and just schedule there own, what if!!!!

  • Thanks to the Kalos Kagathos Foundation and Bruce Hopping for stepping forward and maintaining a stalwart tradition of Honoring Water Polo Teams, Players and Coaches together for 22 years.
A special Thanks to John Kulisich for organizing and promoting.
