Frankly Fryer: Game of the Week

September 15th, 2010, 5:47 pm · · posted by

GAME OF THE WEEK

NO. 7 DANA HILLS (2-0) VS. NO. 6 EDISON (2-0)

Where, when: Huntington Beach High, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: I had Dana Hills at No. 6 and Edison at No. 7 on my county Top 10 ballot this week. I was outvoted. Having been married 27 years, this is not a new development. Neither is succumbing to the superior wisdom of another. This is a tough one to forecast, but it looks like Edison just might have enough offensive firepower to get it done.

Getting quarterback Chase Favreau ruled eligible by the CIF-Southern Section provided a heck of a spark in last week’s 48-7 triumph over Long Beach Wilson, and with another week of practice with Favreau running the offense, things should only get better. The Chargers’ defense sure will be challenged, with Dana Hills quarterback Trent Mason and all-round star Chris Kearney having great seasons already.

Dana also has the revenge factor working it, as the Dolphins lost twice last season to Edison, including a 47-16 defeat in the playoffs. There also was a 34-17 regular-season victory for Edison over Dana Hills. Sometimes, big losses are difficult to overcome psychologically.

Winner: Edison

It’s nice to see those Chargers remain competitive without having to recruit…. I mean, finding a QB solution so quickly. So much for the knock by Edision Fans last year on recruiting in private schools. It must be so satisfying to know “Student” athletes want to attend Edison for a “Higher Education” purpose. Did the Edison Boosters pay the moving fees too, or was it strictly by the book like Reggie Bush? I thought I saw a new Escalade in HB somewhere (FYI – just having fun :) )

Good luck this season. You’re in the spotlight like Lebron and the Miami Heat

  • keeping it real says:

Fryer forgot to mention that Dana was leading at half and Edison came back to destroy them oh yeah and viles threw for 485 yards.

  • UHWarrior says:

Dana has been tested early already. They beat a decent Santiago squad, and a very physical Trabuco Hills squad. This game will be won in the trenches (as usual). Which ever team can dominate the front lines will win. This will be a great test for Edison, DH is better than Wilson. I’ll be there tonight, so I’m hoping for a very entertaining game.

  • Steve Fryer says:

Dana is a darned good team, and I would not be shocked at all by a Dana win over Edison.

Anybody notice how I really played it slick — I vote Dana over Edison in the poll, but picked Edison to win? I can’t go wrong. What a weasel I am. Maybe I should go into politics!

  • beachbum5953 says:

UHW… you may want to check your facts on the DH record so far… they beat up a very physical Trubuco Hills squad? Now I’ll be the first to agree that TH has a very physical and tough team, but unless they played them in a scrimmage, which doesn’t mean a lot… I think you mean Aliso Nigel… 51-17! If so, potential…. yep… determined… sure… hard nosed… maybe… physical… not so much!

At the same time, LosAl has taken a lot of heat for their weak schedule in the preseason, but just for the record, until this week, Edison hasn’t had much competition either… Maxpreps lists the power rating for LosAl at 14,7… DH at 22.4… Edison at 4.7…

Could be a mistake but it could be looking at the first two opponents Edison faced and also not be factoring in the next three tough games for Edison…

    • UHWarrior says:

BeachB- Yes, you are correct. DH beat Santiago and Aliso Niguel, I’m getting confused in my old age. THills lost to NH not DH. Thanks. I’ll still be at the game tonight, hopefully I’ll be able to tell which team is which. Thank goodness the teams where different colored uniforms. Peace.

  • beachbum5953 says:

Steve… I suggest that you don’t quit your day job… 2010 isn’t going to be a good year for weasels in politics!

  • 2002tony says:

beachbumm, this will be the first test of the season for both teams. The difference about taking heat for their schedule is that everyone else does play someone who is a test. Just about every team has a game or two that we may not find is a test for them, but they dont have a complete preseason of them, especially after the coach brags that this could be one of his best teams ever and then schedules like he will have a .500 team.

After how poorly Los Al played last week, I am really surprised that they didnt drop in the ratings. With 5 min left in the game, Los Al had the ball on their own 46, and there was just a TD separating them from Mayfair??? Every other team in the top 10 would have had their 2nd team in by then and the game well in hand, but not Los AL.

  • Ocfootball says:

Chris Kearney will run all over Edison

  • JohnConner says:

Trent Mason will put up numbers tonight but Edison’s defensive line penatrates quickly and forces the quarter back out of the pocket so he’ll rush out but Charles Burks and company are too quick i think to get around the corner. Yes he has legs to run effectivily but his arm will hurt the Chargers most with Chris Kearny recieving those balls.

The Chargers offensive line is not as good as last year’s and he’ll have a lot of trouble in the pocket but Coach White has another set of recievers with speed and capability of getting open quick. Nick Masaniai at running back gives them the yards on the ground but how will that O-line do?

    EHS 35 DHHS 31

High scoring offense on both sides, with defense’s that are inexperienced but Dana allowing 20 and 17pts is a little scary

  • LancerFootball says:

OCVarsity should stream it xD . . . sheesh. So many good games going on at once, can’t decide on where to go lol

  • beachbum5953 says:

Just came from the Edison DH game… left at half… from my humble perspective, Edison should have at least a couple of more TD’s… that is if the receivers caught all of the balls that were right in their hands… they must have dropped hat appeared to be 8-10 catchable balls…

Unless DH’s get their act together, from my point of view, they’ve been totally out-classed tonight. Edison’s D totally shut down the “explosive” DH offense…

From what I saw last week with SC and TH… DH will be lucky to place third in the SCL… just one observers opinion.

  • JohnConner says:

    27-21 Edison

The Chargers gave them two touchdowns and multiple third down conversions. Edison’s defense stopped Mason early and Kerny to nothing until the second half (4th quarter)

The score should have been around 42-7 or 42-14, The Charger’s allowed way to many mistakes on defense which cost them two scores. Chase made really good throws but also horrible high throws. Masaniai got the yards done on the ground. Overall they did “OK” If they play like they did tonight against Servite next week it won’t even be close.

Dana Hills running game with Mason worked like i said but it didn’t work until the 4th quarter, Kerny played “So So”. The Dolphins had no running game with their half back, a lot of screens worked effectivily but Trent Mason was their only hope.

The Dolphins defense hasn’t seen a team run an offense like the Chargers this year and they couldn’t get use to it. The Chargers expected what they expected but got tired in the second half.

    Good job Chargers
