Frankly Fryer: Cypress vs. Capistrano Valley

September 15th, 2010, 5:47 pm · · posted by

CYPRESS (1-0) VS. CAPISTRANO VALLEY (1-1)

Where, when: Capistrano Valley High, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: When former county coach of the year Ray Fenton finally got tired of his job insecurity at Cypress and left to become coach at Webb of Claremont, some might have figured that would about do it for Cypress. Not so fast. The Centurions beat a good Norwalk team, 28-6, last week at Norwalk. Vincent Rivera scored three touchdowns for Cypress, but the stars were the Centurions on defense who held Norwalk to 97 yards through the first three quarters.

Capistrano Valley looks like an improved team. Yes, you probably have read that here a few times over the years. The Cougars got shut out by Trabuco Hill two weeks ago, and beat Marina, 21-6, last week, as Cole Winninghoff had 129 receiving yards and a touchdown. People look down on Marina, but that team would be a league-championship contender if it was not in the Sunset League and if it was not in the same city as Edison, where consistent success makes it a choice destination for Huntington Beach football players.

While Capo looks better this year, Cypress continues to impress with Mike Cobleigh, a longtime Centurions assistant, taking over for Fenton.

Winner: Cypress

Vincent Rivera doesn’t quit… think he played on both sides of the ball. As long as Cap. Valley has more that 3 plays and can execute on passing plays, they’ll be fine. But who knows… maybe an onside kick might make a difference for Cypress if they ever get into trouble, it worked vs last week’s team
