Whittier Christian standout defensive tackle Jeff Worthy (6-4, 290) suffered a sprained knee on the first play of the Heralds’ scrimmage Friday against El Rancho and Don Bosco Tech.
Worthy, a Boise State commit, got an X-ray on Friday and plans to follow up with an orthopedic doctor Sunday or Monday. He also is considering an MRI.
On Saturday night, at the Heralds’ barbecue, he was on crutches and wearing a knee immobilizer.
“It could be a lot worse,” Worthy said.
Worthy said he was injured when he went to plant his leg during a run play and his knee buckled.
Whittier Christian coach Sergio Gradilla said Worthy is questionable to play in the Heralds’ season-opening game Sept. 3 at Ontario Christian.
“I’ll be back on the field,” Worthy said. “Definitely before St. Margaret’s (on Sept. 24).”
Worthy had 19 sacks last season and received scholarship offers from UCLA and Nebraska among others.
