O.C. football Top 25: No. 12

August 25th, 2010, 9:10 am · · posted by

12. Tustin
(11-2, 5-0 in the Century League last year)

Tustin might have been included in the preseason top 10 if running back DaVonte Young was eligible, but Young, who transferred to Tustin from Irvine after rushing for 1,631 yards and 20 touchdowns last year as a freshman, is ineligible and has moved on to St. John Bosco of Bellflower (where he might have to sit out the 2010 season).

Still, this should be a typically high-scoring Tillers team thanks to the double-wing that they run to perfection. Tustin, now in the Empire League, has its usual assortment of talent including fullback/defensive lineman Denzale Stewart and defensive lineman Faitele Faafoi.

How many players do the Tillers have at the varsity level?

  • Victor Latham says:

Last year they suited up 19 players for the playoffs.

Although I somewhat admire the “ironmen” of Tustin, where most of their guys play on both sides of the ball, it also seems to be their downfall when it comes to playing better teams. If it’s a close game in the 4QTR the Tillers run out of gas. Why suit up only 19 players for the playoffs is beyond me.

Another thing I admire about Tustin, is that everyone knows they run the double wing offense but very few teams can stop them. Amazing.

However, this years team won’t be as dominant in league as the past two years. Tustin will struggle with Pacifica and Cypress for the league championship.

    • MJ says:

Good observation. Tustin will definitely finish in the top 3 in the Empire League.

      UH,

It’s amazing, but in a way, it’s not. High school coaches don’t know how
the D.W. should be defended. Reason, they don’t see it enough. That’s
why it’s effective. It’s difficult to create a scout team to run it effectively,
therefore, the only real experience teams get defending it is when they face it, too late. The key is man coverage, 10-1 defense. Most high school
coaches leave a safety deep in case something bad happens, and it does
3-4 four yards at a time.

The reason they suit up less players is they usually dont have the numbers other schools have….while they may have talent other schools would kill for, they lack depth…I dont see a problem with Pacifica but the cypress game should be interesting with Tustin coming out on top.

Tustin has always been a 1st half team. Build up the score and hang on till the end of the 4th quarter.

  • Tracy says:

I can’t wait for the Tillers to tear it up this season. Watch out for a Jr. running back named Tyler Siudzinski. A talented football player with intelligence, speed, power, and a work ethic that is second to none.

  • MJ says:

If only Coach Miller would throw the ball effective 10-15 times a game when they NEED to…..in last year’s game against Trabuco, I watched in disgust how Dominique Coulture wouldn’t get the ball thrown enough to him. Split that tall 6″5 “Randy Moss” prototype out on an island with those little 5-foot-nothing Trabuco DB’s and throw him a hitch….and watch that him go. But some things will never change.

    Lets get it Tillers!

  • MJ says:

    *that…added that my mistake.
