Girls volleyball: OLu captures Oxnard summer tournament

August 12th, 2010, 1:05 pm · · posted by

The Lancers claimed first place at the Oxnard Summer Invitational, which featured Trinity League rival Santa Margarita.

OLu and Santa Margarita were the only two county teams competing in the tournament.

Redondo Union finished second, falling to OLu in five games, 18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10.

OLu defeated Harvard-Westlake in four games and Buena in three in pool play before sweeping Ventura to reach the championship match.

Santa Margarita lost to Vista Murrieta in pool play and fell to the silver division bracket. The Eagles are the defending Trinity League champions.

However, OLu returns 10 members from last season’s second-place team and might be the league favorite this season.

My early season prediction is that the Trinity League will be the toughest league this season with OLu, Santa Margarita and Mater Dei. Mater Dei could make a big leap this season.

In fact, all three teams should be in the Top 10 in my preseason rankings, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see all three teams open in the Top 5.

We shall see.

The preseason rankings countdown begins Sept. 1, with teams 6-10 released. Teams 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 will follow Sept. 2-6.

In the meantime, let me know your thoughts on the upcoming season and how you see the teams stacking up.

Does anyone know about Connelly? They moved up to Div 4A. Chances to repeat… for go for a five peat?

    • volleylover says:

Connelly is not even a real program… they have won the lower divisions because of superior talent first two championships they had Lilla Fredrick who ended her high school career as MVP of a National Championship TCA team at Junior Olympics and is now playing at Pepperdine.

The past two years have had Nikki Yost who has been by far the best player in her league and division and she is only going into her Jr. year.

Hopefully they can build a program thats more like some of the top programs around where they actually go out into real tournaments and see what they are really made of…

      • CIF Southern Section says:

As someone who has seen Connelly in the playoffs I can say Connelly is a good team. They certainly have a good chance to repeat.

Anyone who knows volleyball knows that a team cannot win with just one good player. Lilla Fredrick graduated three years ago and they won their division two years without her, and what I admire about their program is they don’t depend on one person. While Nikki Yost is a good player she may not be the best player on her team as they have many dedicated and talented players in all positions.

To knock them is just exhibiting ignorance about a team sport at best and poor sportsmanship at worst. We have worked hard to rid our sport of the reputation of having primma donnas with poor attitude and these sort of comments, don’t help and are more a commentary on the person making them than they are on Connelly.

Congrats to the following Orange County Volleybal teams, Los AL, Newport Harbor, CDM, Orange Lutheran and HB who were all ranked in the National TOP 100 Teams to open the season by Prep Volleyball.com
