Football recruiting: La Habra’s Sparling headed to Conference USA

La Habra defensive back Mike Sparling – one of Orange County’s top senior football recruits – has committed to SMU, Highlanders coach Frank Mazzotta said in a text message Monday.

Sparling impressed a lot of people with his play at cornerback last month at the Edison passing tournament, which the Highlanders won.

He is one of the top defensive backs to watch this fall. Sparling will team with Vai Peko to form one of the better cornerback duos in the county.

Fielding at Los Al is tough. Davion at Edison is skilled, too

Peko is a transfer corner from Alhambra

I’m pretty sure he has a relative already on the La Habra team – offensive lineman Kyle Peko
