High school hockey: County schools added to Ducks’ league

July 29th, 2010, 3:21 pm · · posted by

Hockey on the high school level has expanded, and it can’t be long before more schools join.

The Anaheim Ducks announced it will add five teams to the Anaheim Ducks Hockey League.

The league will consist of four county schools plus Damien High School of La Verne. The county teams are Santa Margarita, JSerra, Servite and Orange Lutheran.

All schools will field junior varsity teams, while Santa Margarita and JSerra will be the only to have jv and varsity teams.

“The Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League has taken a tremendous step forward,” said Art Trottier, General Manager of Anaheim/Westminster ICE and Director of the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League in a press release. “The addition of these five teams will help the growth of hockey in Southern California and give young players an opportunity to play at a high level without having to leave home.”

Coaches for the teams are as followed: Dave Karpa (JSerra varsity); Craig Johnson (Santa Margarita varsity); Jason Marshall (Orange Lutheran); Randy Burridge (Servite); Arne Pappin (Damien); Kelly Askew (JSerra junior varsity); Dennis Hands (Santa Margarita junior varsity).

All league games will be played on Saturdays at The Rinks – Anaheim ICE.

Launched on July 1, 2008, the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League is designed as an extension of the Ducks’ organizational goal of growing hockey talent close to home while also working to achieve California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) status. JSerra varsity began play in September 2008 as the league’s charter member. Santa Margarita varsity joined JSerra as the second member of the league, making its debut in September 2009. As the league continues to grow, the Anaheim Ducks will continue to provide financial support for each team involved in the program.

Ah, finally the Lutherans join the Catholics! Go OLu !!

    • Elle says:

The OLu kids are great and we enjoy seeing them on the SMCHS campus. It is always good and the behavior of the Lancers is to be commended. Having OLu join will be fun.

This is awesome for socal hockey, I wish I could have played on a high school team, back in the day.

  • Uncle Eddy says:

Let’s all cheer for the privileged private school kids! Yippee! Now let’s get real. This won’t be a CIF Southern Section playoff sport any time soon. Just like Lacrosse, “the fastest growing sport on the west coast!” it will only be for the privileged. Those in more econonically challenged communities will not shell out the big bucks for the gear and ice time, so it’s just a fad.

    • Elle says:

I agree, Uncle Eddy. Private schools often have opportunities that come at a big price for us parents. I truly wish public school administrators would eliminate the money spent on the social engineering crap and redirect the money towards core curriculum, arts and sports. But, no individual should let government get in their way. If there is a kid out there who is hungry to play ice hockey, they need to state their case and go for it.

Elle, you think public school administrators are spending too much money on “social engineering crap”? I work for a school district. Mater Dei spends more money on football than the schools in the Garden Grove league spend on social engineering.
No one is standing in the way of kids that really want to play ice hockey. Their parents can take them to Anaheim ICE and sign them up for one of the many leagues that are offered. Of course if their parents can afford it……….

This is why I’m proud to be a Ducks fan.
