Blackwell commits to USC

May 18th, 2010, 9:07 am · · posted by

Mater Dei wide receiver Victor Blackwell committed to USC last night, MD coach Bruce Rollinson said this morning.

Blackwell is the most talented receiver I have seen in these past 20 years covering high school football fulltime in Orange County. Yes, better than the Finnerans at Santa Margarita, etc.

Last year, he averaged 20 yards a catch and 114 yards receiving a game as a junior. He scored 11 touchdowns. He was listed as 6-1, 190 last year but he will be bigger this fall.

MD QB Max Wittek committed to USC earlier this year.

  • FRYFRIER says:

Im sure you enjoyed his antics during the MD-Servite game as well… Another classy commit for USC

  • mbgirl says:

fry frier…hahaha…yes, i agree…so why only mention his junior stats under barkley and not his senior stats?? hhhhmmmm

    • credo says:

wow mbgirl he just said his stats with Witteck at QB not with barkley. He is a junior and wont be a senior till next season.

  • Steve Fryer says:

Do you roll out of bed this angry every day, or do you slowly work your way into your usual state of hysteria?

    • Sunset League says:

Blackwell is a great receiver but I think Rod Perry was a tad bit better. Unfortunately he had some serious injuries or else he would have been playing on Sundays.

  • Diesel says:

I have to say I find it perplexing how some kids go to a program like USC when the talent level is so high. I am not saying this kid isn’t a great WR, he may be the best in the county or even the state. I am saying that USC just recruited the top 2 recievers in the country in this years class. they also have a bench full of high calibur players. I think these kids see the program and the semi success it has had, and want to go to a winner, and don’t think of there chances of playing. Now there is nothing wrong with a free education from a school like USC, but if you want to play why not go to a school that needs players who can start as freshmen or at least get some significant playing time. Arizona, Zona St., Washington and Washington State, Cal, all good schools in the pac 10 with holes at the WR position. I can find 15 schools that this kid can start at next year and be in contention for a top conference title and even a national title in the next few years. Also the playing time will make him better and more ready for the pros. This kid will not be the only kid at his position USC recruits this year, and they will be signing more the year after, the competition level will always be tough. Look at Aaron Corp, one of the best in the nation recruited by USC, in line to be the next starter, and they sign Matt Barkley, who was the best in the nation his senior year, and corp is a backup again, now to a freshman. Corp has transfered to Richmond, where he will start, to keep his chances of going pro alive.
Now I know that this is a verbal, and he can still change his mind, but if he doesn’t, I wish him the best of luck and hope he earns a starting position in the offense. Congrats on the scholarship you should be proud.

  • hallux valgus says:

“so why only mention his junior stats under barkley and not his senior stats”

I’m going to guess that it’s because his senior stats don’t exist yet. And his junior stats came with Wittek at QB, not Barkley.

  • keeping it real says:

Why would a kid go to Washington State to play football? can you name a big time nfl player out of WSU in the past 10 years or cal or zona state? Im curious. USC=National TV. You become a national name by even being on the roster. Blackwell will play at USC. Kiffin plays talented kids. Kid has some character issues. Witnessed that at the Edison/Mater Dei game.

    • scootermcray says:

The kid has some serious character issues, but USC will have no issue overlooking those traits — as long as he can run fast.

      • SC 1990 says:

I’m sorry do you know this kid or his backgroung like his parents. You are way off.

Great parents. I agree mistake during the Servite game but you are really way off.

  • Diesel says:

Yes most kids at USC get so much face time ON THE BENCH. Really without googleing a name, name me the third string punter for USC, or the fourth string CB, I mean shouldn’t be hard If they are A “NATIONAL NAME” Those schools were examples, and while I would not tell a kid to go to wash st, If he was going to start their and have a chance to go pro then I would suggest it.
Washington State- Marcus Trufant, Rob Meier, Jason David, and more
CAL-Aaron Rodgers (QB), Marshawn Lynch (RB), DeSean Jackson (WR), Andre Carter (DE), are the biggest names
Zona St.- Terreel Suggs, Todd Heap, Paul Fanika.

‘I’m sure you recognize some of those names.

  • In The Mix says:

USC asks players directly do you want to compete with the best. If they hesitate or say no the offer is off. If you want to be the best why not compete with the best it is how you get better. I guess per some prior posts he should not compete to be the best but hide somewhere else.

Celebrate his opportunity or not, but save the criticism when it has a direct impact on your person.

He will do very well at USC and will be better for it. I am excited for him to go to such a great school and program. Most kids dream of this and he is realizing it. Congratulations to the young man well earned and deserved.

Before stating character issues learn more about him and the situations to which you may be referring and at least admit there needs to be 2 sides and more to the situation. If you are noting it as a character issue then please note the same for the others involved as well.

  • In The Mix says:

Corp came to compete and simply did not do what he and others expected. Nothing against him maybe it simply was bad timing. He certainly per your post is no worse for the wear and likely better and more competitive because of it.

    • scootermcray says:

the truth be told…Corp got screwed. Barkley sucked last year. When you have as many TDs as INTs, you do not deserve to be starting at USC. Corp got one chance and he sucked, but then again, why not run Corp when you have him!

  • UHWarrior says:

Deisel’s right- USC is so deep in talent at the skill positions, it will be tough for Blackwell to break-in as a starter at USC. It’s not impossible, but tough. I’m sure Kiffins guys promised him the world. Unless he’s a superstar, he’ll be riding the pine, for a couple of years.

  • Truth says:

It’s not politically correct to use usc and classy in the same sentence.

  • keeping it real says:

USC doesnt have a 3rd string punter and the 4th string CB will most likely be a freshmen considering they lost 3 starters this year in the secondary, the guys you named from WSU who are they? pine riders. The guys from cal are known by hardcore nfl fans, Leinart, bush, white, sanchez cushing and malaglu are known by EVERYONE because like it or not USC is the big time in college football. Espn reports on if a sc player spits on the ground walking home from the bar. A kid wants to have his name known by everyone. Blackwell will see playing time. Trust me if Brice Taylor plays Blackwell will play.

    • Diesel says:

The guys from Cal are known by most all NFL fans. The Packers starting QB that replaced Brett Farve, my Aunt knows that, and she doesn’t watch football.
You said name any player from Washington St. I named 3 of the 15-20 active in the NFL from that school. Marcus Trufant is a pro bowl corner, who starts, Rob meier was a starting D lineman who will probably be a back up next year, Jason David has been a starting corner for the last 6 years and started and won a super bowl with the Colts. I bet most people who aren’t SC fans couldn’t tell you what team cushing or malaluga play for.
I love how you describe the backups for USC as nationally known names, but the ones who are in the NFL that went somewhere else are “Pine riders.” I guarantee that anyone who went to a school that had a bad record in football and started for the likes of Washington state, or Arizona state, or Indiana, Duke, SMU, are glad they got the playing experience and lost games in college instead of being a Pine rider at USC, so they got to go to the NFL and make money and win rings.

Guess your not really into USC football, If you were you would know that they have 10 players listed at the CB position and I believe they signed to recruits for next year. Now each team uses has two starting CB’s so basic math would tell me that there is one starter, and 4 backups making a total of 5 at each position. As for the punter there are only two listed, but most likely the PK would do it if the first two got hurt, but since he’s not listed I will give you that one.

Finally if you read my first post I said:
” wish him the best of luck and hope he earns a starting position in the offense. Congrats on the scholarship you should be proud.”

He was offered a scholarship by one of the best programs and schools in the country, You have to have game to get that, I still don’t think he will start until Jr year.

      • keeping it real says:

Sanchez didnt start til he was a junior… at least consistently. And Blackwell and Sanchez were placed at same level in hs look at him. My mom who watches football had no idea who those players you named were soooo yeah. And lets see all i have to say is matt cassell. Dude didnt take a snap at usc and makes more money then all of us combined in KC im sure he enjoyed riding the pine all the way to the nfl. thats basically the best recruiting line out there. sorrryy.

        • Diesel says:

yes 1 out of how many hundreds of thousand college football players, and millions of high school players. sounds like the same odds as the lottery, Besides Matt Cassell is not a good QB, he took a 16-0 team and led them to an early off season in New England, so they traded him while he had some commodity, He threw 16 TD’s and 16 picks last year, with a QB rating of 69. Yeah maybe experience else where in college would have made him better, and got him in the hiesman run instead of riding the pines. But yes he is one great story. but what about Booty, Davis, McDonald, Hance, Green, Hinds The other QB’s who never saw the field at USC I know they had offers to other schools like Arizona St., Miss, and San Diego St. who had bad records at the time. Don’t think Mustain should hold his breath about going pro. Yeah great recruiting line. Thats like saying hey buy a lottery ticket and you will win the lotterey, HE DID.
” Hey come be a back up for us, and most likely you won’t ever play again.” Keep making up comments that don’t make sense, You might get lucky and have a good one. Anyways lets see if the Trojans with the best team on paper can actually win a nat’l championship with Kiffin, 2004 was a long time ago.

      • The Guild says:

Relying on my limited and humble experiences, it is my belief that great coordinators and experienced assistants are more valuable to a new regime than an untested new HC. That being said, the best time for testing one’s skills against the “rest of the best”, is when a new staff comes in with limited ties to any one returning player. It’s a great opportunity for any hsfb player who wishes to benefit from the exposure that comes with playing for the Trojans, or Bruins, or any other Div 1 program. The best want to play against the best, more so than any one particular school, for the most part. USC represents tremendous upside for those with the courage to try that playground…

      • hey diesel I love how theres no reply box when you put your foot in your mouth.what about booty? was he not the starter for 1 season ? and that wasnt paul mc donald you called out was it because he led a couple good trojan teams if I recall.so whats your point.did your only hiesman winner some 43 years ago make it in the nfl,you know gary beban. its about college football and competing to be the best.

        • Diesel says:

Dude, I hate UCLA, at what point of any of my posts did I ever mention UCLA, the Bruins, or anything close to them. Dude use your reading glasses.

No no paul McDonald, Michael Mcdonald, QB was a great PAT holder. Although I give him props for walking on to the program and earning a spot.

And your right it’s about college football and competing with the best, like the trojans do against Washington, Stanford, Oregon St. Arizona. Who will it be this year? Or was that a Pete Carrol Curse?

  • zman says:

Prater and Woods will probably go pro early so they need to reload..

  • keeping it real says:

Alright ill also name a kid involved with Blackwell in the Edison game. Jeff Trojan a kid who has the highest gpa on the team, got into brown and is an all around good kid. Blackwell cannot handle being owned by someone hopefully he will learn this next year. Did you see his actions in the servite game? kid has to work on his mental toughness if he thinks he heard bad things from servite be ready for ND, UCLA and the rest of the pac 10.

  • I thought says:

I thought USC was on self imposed sanctions and more NCAA sanctions to follow?

They do recruit the best of the best – at least on paper, but there is more to it than stats and hype. The Trojans are a big target because of their past success – many moons ago. Plus they are arrogant which adds to the motivation to beat them. Other national championship contenders have the special X-factor that USC is missing. Like the Raiders, they make their money on the past heroics and the blind faithful. Tradition will make them competitive, but they will never achieve the success of past teams. Great place to go to school….the USC diploma along with being on the football team will open many doors along the career path.

  • vballnut says:

Perfect timing with sanctions coming out against SC this week.

Well, they said he was good, they never said he was smart.

The good news is that many of these kids that drank the Kiffin Koolaid will have a chance to go elsewhere after they find out they were misled about sanctions from NCAA. If you’re planning to go pro in two years and you can’t go to a bowl either year, even the unsmart will be unhappy.

    • what sanctions? do you know something the general public doesent? are you privy to classified info?get off your high horse lucan ruins. and how many moons ago was it ? 2 ? one bad season by USC standards does not give any ucla crap head the right to question anybodies national title aspirations.when have you even come close?1990something. and what happened in miami? edigrin jones!!!! and bye bye bob toledo. many moons ago? I have never seen a ucla team finish a season with less than 2 losses and back in the day you guys usually backed into rose bowl if the rest of conference allowed you to.

  • zman says:

UCLA are you forgetting your coach Rick N. has put two programs on probation and has over 50 MAJOR recruiting violations to his name and is the only coach in the NCAA history to be reprimanded by the coaches association for cheating? How hypocritical of you bring up sanctions when you are coached by the biggest cheater around.

  • keeping it real says:

I like how UCLA likes to take shots when we go 9-4 beat ND, beat OSU in Ohio State. If UCLA lost what SC had lost they would have gone 4-9. Sorry but when was the last time you played in a BCS bowl game? how many straight bcs bowl games has usc played in? ohhh yeah. How many national championships do you have in football? when was your last one? 1953? Oh yeah my bad. USC football is fine, its atop the pac 10 and will atop the nation in 2 years. Quote me. Put it in stone.

  • diddo, and why would he want to go any where else. My hats off to the young man for taking up the challenge to compete.remember he is still a senior in h/s and who knows how much better he will be by next summer.Ive been to both ucla and usc spring practices this spring and its like watching scumora[ucla] vs la habra[usc].good luck to the bruins in nov when they enter the land of giants

  • ko says:

Please, let’s talk Servite and then debate character issues. Anyone who was at that game saw cheapshot after cheapshot by the boys in black. Check out the film of their db’s. Late hits, holding, etc. etc. etc. This is coached behavior, and frankly, they can now become the team that OC loves to hate.

  • MattieB5 says:

KO(‘d) – Did you watch the “Me”, “Me”, “Me” video on the NFL Channel about the Servite/MD Rivalry? It was amazing to see the differences in the programs. “Win it for ME!” “Do it for ME!” I couldn’t get enough of MD’s program.

You must be another MD parent that left early that game? I personally witnessed Blackwell flip off the sidelines while he was complaining to the refs. Class act? Compete at USC? Let’s see how his senior stats are after the Servite match up.

  • hoocares says:

i say the kid de-commits when the NCAA hands down sanctions against usc.

  • Pundit says:

Word on the street tonight is USC is looking at a two year bowl ban, a vacated 2004 season and 20 scholies over the next 4 years.

  • Truth says:

    Game, set, Sanctions. It’s over.

  • oh boy I knaw the losin bruins would be poncing on this.nothing will change in the next 2 seasons other than bowl games which is better than any one of the crappy bowls you would go to. and the tradition will continue , and cant way to see barkleys smirk this season. what tradition do you have other than being usc baby sisters? like herbstret siad this morning usc will be back to prominence in 2 years.can anybody or better yet has anybody ever made comments like that about usuckla, and whether he gives it back or not your last hiesman was a bust in NFL42 years ago ?now thats a rich tradition.fight on

    • Pundit says:

You’re mistaken …I am not even a Bruin fan…..I am just not a $C fan.
You see, I am not fond of programs that cheat. (You see I respect programs that compete on a level playing field. For example, have you ever seen a quality program like Penn State in a negative light?)

As for being back to prominence in two years, recall it took Oklahoma almost 12 years and three coaches to recover from a similar sentence. (Just wait until you find out that your stop-gap hire of a coach in Lame Kiffen can’t coach!)

As a repeat offender with a lack of institutional control, the $C program/NCAA cash cow is fortunate to have not have been given the death penalty as recall the instance of the matter being adjudicated today occurred while $C was on NCAA probation for yet another earlier matter.

The writing was on the wall when Pom Pom Carroll left Kiffen the proverbial sh*t end of the stick! Sadly, not unlike a rat jumping a sinking ship. IMHO, everything $C accomplished under Pom Pom is tainted.

IMHO – You’re in denial – not unlike the entire $C athletic dept that has repeatedly stated that this investigation had no substance and was going nowhere since it was initiated over four years ago. Foolish blind arrogance.

Hey even your brethren on “Conquest Chronicles” are acknowledging it is gonna be an extended dark period of $C football.

Update: Make that 30 scholies lost.

$C Tennis is tainted too. Comical, if it wasn’t so sad.

Try to keep up will ya?

      • Diesel says:

Don’t bother rationalizing with him Pundit, apparently everyone on here that talks smack or truth about his Beloved Trojans, are UCLA fans, he can’t comprehend that there are rational thinking sports fans out there who speak truth, and have good “takes” on a situation.

If I were Wittick, I would start looking elsewhere, there are 5 QB’s in front of you now that they signed the kid from riverside.

Congrats to Barkley his final bowl game was the Holiday Bowl, and USC will not be on top in two years. Because Lane Kiffin Is not a great coach. Finally I am not a UCLA fan, just so again you will not put me in with that program.
