March 3rd, 2010, 7:54 pm · · posted by

The Spartans captured 7 of 9 doubles sets and upset the Tigers, 10-8, in nonleague action Wednesday at Villa Park High.

Records: Villa Park 2-0; Valencia 1-1

Studs of the match: Villa Park’s No. 1 doubles team of Jimmy Fernandez and Eric Wilson. The pair swept, including a come-from-behind victory in the first round over Valencia’s No. 1 team to win 6-4.

The match: Villa Park stacked its doubles lineup and it worked. Valencia switched its lineup from Tuesday’s match against Esperanza, playing Sean De Young in doubles against Villa Park. VP led 4-2 after Round 1 with a sweep in doubles. Villa Park then held on as the team’s split the final two rounds. There were plenty of close sets, including the Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of Brandon Chang and Kevin Paik saving two sets points down 2-5 before winning in a tiebreaker in Round 2. In the same round, Mason Banks rallied from 3-5 down to win 7-5 and gain a key point for Villa Park. In the final round, Paul Yim fought back from 3-4 to win 6-4 and clinch the match for VP.

Notes: Curtis Wu and Jonathan Hammel swept at Nos. 1 and 2 singles for Valencia.
