Girls soccer: Esperanza’s Baisden out for CIF finals? (video)

Esperanza's Rylee Baisden

The Esperanza Aztecs’ 2-0 semifinal victory over Santa Margarita was marred in the final two minutes of the match when leading scorer Rylee Baisden was given a red card.

As she went for a ball that was served into the box off a free kick, Baisden inadvertently made contact with Eagles goalie Haley Guerrero just as she made the save.

The head referee determined the contact was excessive and Baisden, who had been issued a yellow card earlier in the match, was given a straight red card and ejected.

Accoriding to the CIF bylaws, “any player receiving a red card may not play or be in attendance at the team’s next contest.”

The Aztecs next contest of course is the CIF-SS Division 1 title match against San Clemente.

Esperanza coach John King said he would petition CIF, but didn’t expect the ejection to be overturned.

It would be a big loss for the Aztecs, as Baisden is the team’s leading scorer this season with 18 goals.

Man, that’s a tough call to make…you’ve got to feel bad for Rylee, if in fact she won’t be able to play in the Finals!
I don’t mean to be critical, and I understand her move, but was it truly necessary to be anywhere near the goalie w/ the game very much in hand? Guess you never know, especially in the last 2 mins.
Tough stuff…I bet Esperanza beats San Clemente anyway! If that happens, they’ll get Rylee back for SoCal Regionals.

She got a red card for that????

  • Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004 says:

great work Khamis. Bad job ref.

    Free Rylee Baisden.

  • Big E says:

Wow, what a non-issue. She barely ran into the goalie and clearly did not mean to make ‘excessive’ contact. The only thing that was excessive was the red card…
Oh well, a little bit of adversity to overcome. Guess they’ll have to rely on their defense as always and get that goal or two…or more…good luck, EHS!

  • Jonathan Khamis says:

    Haha, thanks Mr. Calhoun.

I really don’t think this should have resulted in a red card. Baisden was playing hard all game, and was going at full speed. Her momentum took her into the goal keeper, and she should not have been carded for it. Hopefully, the CIF can overturn this call and bring justice back to Orange County!

  • I would have to agree with Mr. Damian Calhoun.
She got a red card for that?
Also, it is great work by Jonathan Khamis, who can add to his long list of solid production.

  • former ehs parent says:

I was at the game and could not believe either card given to Rylee…but when i watched it back on video it seems even less of an offense. It is just sad that a bad referee has the power to take a lifetime memory of a CIF Championship game away from a kid.
On another note…I could not be more proud of the players, parents and of John King. Everyone said that they would struggle due to loss of talent from 2009….it just goes to show you that when a group of players play with heart and passion and for EACHOTHER the sky is the limit! Thiis season has been a record breaking season for EHS….and the fasion in which they compete is so awesome….GO AZTECS!!!! Bring it home…………….

  • Pundit says:

    Now ask yourself.

Have you ever seen a GOOD referee officiating the high school game?

There Grasshopper – you have your answer.

IMHO – too often the unemployed or civil servant or retired earning their bingo money.

    Sad

  • hold on says:

that was a bad call. I really hope that this get petitioned and CIF lets her play in the game. This is a once in a life time to play in the CIF Finals.

  • Crystal says:

Where was that ref when San Clemente kicked Royal’s goalie in the chest and wasn’t even given a warning?! Royal’s goalie had to be taken out of the game. ???

  • jose says:

esperanza is definatley hot right now i cant wait for them to show off their new rings

  • RCsoccer says:

Maybe if CIF would at least once make a stand against a bad call the Ref’s would know there are limits to what they can do. Right now they have absolute power. And we know what that dose. Has CIF ever reversed a refs call ? And if not why bother even having petitions in the bylaws ?

  • Soccer Fan says:

Very rarely do young athletes get an opportunity to play in a CIF final game. There will be an incredible group of young ladies living this dream Saturday night but the Aztecs will be missing one athlete, Rylee Baisden. The Aztecs deserve to have the entire team play in the finals.

Review the footage above . . . overturn the call . . . bring Rylee back!!!!

May the victory go to the Aztecs who have done an incredible job all season long. Go Aztecs!
