Boys soccer: Estancia in the playoffs … for now

February 15th, 2010, 3:02 pm · · posted by

Thom Simmons, the Director of Communications for the CIF Southern Section, said Monday that an a affidavit was submitted to his office, alleging that a player on Estancia’s boys soccer team played for an adult club team and the Eagles at the same time.

If that is indeed true, would be a violation of CIF Rule 600, and any game in which he played for the Eagle would have to be forfeited.

Simmons said several affidavits were also sent to the CIF saying that the player in question is not the same one an the adult club team, so because Southern Section officials don’t know for certain which side is telling the truth, the Eagles are on the Division IV bracket for now.

Despite several attempts via cell phone and email,  Estancia coach Robert Castellano could not be reached for comment.

To compete in this adult league, players, Simmons said, present a card, and that allows for statistics to be tracked. However, Simmons said there is no way to no for sure if the Estancia player in question is the one who indeed presented the card in the adult league.  No video or photographic evidence, Simmons said, has been presented.

If definitive proof can be presented to the CIF before the  wildcard games kick off at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the Eagles will be removed from the bracket.  No changes can be made to the pairings once the playoffs begin, Simmons said.

    Surprise,surprise!
Cheaters. I hope you get blasted out in the first round.

    • soccerplayer00 says:

      What are you talking about?
Estancia earned their spot in league fair.
Why do other people want to ruin their season?
The kids have worked really hard and i’ve seen them.

  • Johnny Becerra says:

Why is it that teams that dont make it to CIF always do this kind of stuff. Don’t try to ruin Estancia’s playoffs because your team COULDN’T make it. Tough Luck, and stop being such snitches do your work ON the field not off!

    • the soccer czar says:

Snitches? How about playing the game with integrity for a change? Quite falling down like you were shot with a gun every time you are touched. If you got caught cheating, which it sounds like Estancia did, man up and pay the consequences.

      • soccerplayer00 says:

Estancia plays by the rules, play with integrity, honor, they’re a young passionate team this year that have accomplished many things, and everytime they’ve had problems they make it up on the field. For everyone out there who doesn’t like Estancia that’s their problem but we’re going to show everyone else who we are the right way on Thursday.

  • Coach R says:

I Agree with Johnny Becerra……Coach Castellano has been running a great program our of Estancia for several years and I know he enforces all of CIF’s Rules, specially RULE 600.

Good Luck in the Playoffs Eagles

    Coach R

  • Soccer Fan says:

Great program or not, sometimes students make mistakes. Picture proof or not, if the player in question had stats recorded in the adult league during the high school soccer season, then it is important that Principal Phil D’Agostino, Coach Castellano, and the player do the right thing.

Principal D’Agostino’s message to the community emphasizes, “… Estancia will maintain an ethical, nurturing and challenging learning environment.” What better example than this, for Estancia to show the community that, as far as ethics, they walk the talk. What better life experience for the student…it will make him a more successful person in the future knowing he did the right thing.

Estancia High School has a responsibility to the community to teach students that breaking the rules, even unintentionally, has consequences. Estancia High School has an opportunity to step up and make their community proud.

hey if u didn’t follow the rules, then tell the truth instead of hiding it. everyone else had to follow them

    Re : soccerplayer00

I guess playing w/ integrity & honor is Estancia player fouling
an opposing player then taking two swings @ the back of his head
like a woman & running off the field. Only to have his coach have him
throw on a jacket & hide him behind other players on the bench so the brilliant ref’s would not know who to give the red card to. If that’s what
you call integrity & honor then they have boat loads of it.

    • soccerplayer00 says:

The player was DEFENDING himself after the Mesa player gave the FIRST PUNCH.

        Re : soccerplayer00

No I was talking about the first league game against Calvary, although the players actions didn’t suprise me the coach’s sure
        did.

        • soccerplayer00 says:

What ever happened in the Calvary game? There was no fight. It was an intense game. What matters is that Estancia made playoffs and defended their title for the 4th year straight. Coach Robert is an intelligent man who knows what he does, that’s why he’s coach and that’s why we won league. He prepared us the right way with a tough preseason and good practices. Try using the word BELIEVE like Estancia. That’s why we’re at a high spot.

  • JC says:

everyone is just hating on estancia bc its prob the best soccer program in nmusd..if all u guys didnt make it to the playoffs, oh well better luck next time..practice harder!

  • Doesnt Matter says:

It really does not matter since Estancia will not get past the second round after a close first round game against a wild card team. They are not nearly as strong as they have been in the past, but the coach runs a good program and gets the most out of his players.

  • Mr. G says:

I coached Robert, and I coached with him for many years. Robert Castellano would not cheat. He has been doing a great job at Estancia, and I hope they win CIF.

    Re : soccerplayer00
Your 100% right that was an intense game & there was no fight but,
throwing two punches @ the back of someones head & running away
is not a fight it’s a drive by. As for the coach he must be a really good
one to have won as many titles as he has but, I think using the word
integrity might be stretching it a little too far.

Feel free what you want to say “Doesnt Matter” but we’re cleared. Read the link above. Everyone looks up to the Estancia Soccer Program and we’re going to show them one game at a time.
