Girls water polo: Wednesday rewind (2-10-10)

girls_wpolo_iconMy daily spin on girls water polo:

I was impressed with all the young talent in the pool Wednesday night at Beckman for El Toro-Foothill clash. El Toro starts three freshmen and a sophomore. Foothill starts only two seniors. Both teams played strong  freshmen goalies in Kelsey Roland (Foothill) and Emily Browning (El Toro). …

El Toro dropped out of the county top-10 this week but the Chargers looked good. Their defense appeared improved. El Toro just needs to establish more of a 2 meter attack – and perhaps it will draw more exclusions. The Chargers play No. 8 Rosary today in an intriguing Division I match. …

Foothill heads to the Century League next season. The Lady Knights will be stronger contenders next season but county water polo is always so competitive. Los Al starts only one senior in Kaley Dodson. Corona del Mar is pretty young. And don’t forget about Newport. The Lady Sailors will graduate a ton of seniors but won their frosh-soph tourney over the weekend. And if Edison can find another goalie, the Lady Chargers could still be tough.

Who did Newport beat in the finals of that frosh-soph event? The Lady Tars defeated LosAl, 9-4. Figures. …

Loara surprised Pacifica in the Empire League.

The next couple years will be interesting for sure. Los Al will certainly have the best goalie in So Cal next year in Savannah Smith (since Sami Hill will be graduating) and they have some other very talented young players. Keep in mind that Newport did not drop any of the Varsity freshman and sophomores down for the frosh-soph tournament. In fact they brought a few up for the SoCal Championships – including 2 sophs and a freshman. I am sure that Los Al did not either but some of the other teams did, like San Clemente.

Newport should never be counted out – it’s age-group program is a beast and the lower-levels are always awesome

Agreed. Also interesting (and ironic after last weekend) the Edison’s 2 stars – Warde and Williams – came out of Newport’s youth program. Typically they all funnel into Newport Harbor, but those 2 got away. Imagine the possibilities if they were at Newport . . .
