Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson is one of the five finalists for the NFL High School Coach of the Year award. Another finalist is Long Beach Poly coach Raul Lara.

Johnson was nominated by two former Diablos who now are in the NFL — DL Nick Reed of Seattle, and QB Mark Sanchez of the NY Jets.

The winner will be announced Thursday.

This is great recognition for a great coach. The winner receives a $5,000 cash prize, and a grant of $10,000 goes to the coach’s football program. Just for being a finalist, a coach gets $2,500 cash and the program gets $5,000.

Taking a semi-educated guess here, I think Johnson and company might be able to start planning how to spend that $10,000. (They already have great uniforms and a fine weight room  … hmmm, maybe new football offices?)
