Tapped Out: O.C. All-Star match at Edison

January 18th, 2010, 10:51 pm · · posted by

wrestling_iconThe annual O.C. All-Star match took place Monday, Monday, Monday at Edison High. Here is my live blog.

From Five Counties to the O.C. All-Star match

Talk about a seamless transition. If you can survive Five Counties, you can survive anything. I did and now the fun continues with the OCWCA Classic tonight at Edison High.(Talk about a tough and brutal schedule)

The top wrestlers in each weight class (or as close as possible) are set to face off in approximately 30 minutes. Breaking news: We’re starting at 189s. Good reason why, but I’m not going to tell you why.

There are four officials here. I think somebody over-assigned this assignment, or something like that. I think they all should work.

The lineup:

103 – Johnny Sanchez (Santa Ana) vs. Jared Fier (Santa Margarita)
112 – Dean O’Bourke (Calvary Chapel) vs. Sammy Cano (Santa Ana)
119 – Colin Contreras (Servite) vs. Blake Lowrie (Laguna Hills)
125 – Juan Jaime (Laguna Hills) vs. Cameron Carlberg (Santa Margarita)
130 – Pablo Gomez (Santa Ana) vs. Zach Fishman (San Clemente)
135 – Michael Vargas (El Dorado) vs. Alec Robbie (Tesoro)
140 – Charles Chavez (El Dorado) vs. Victor Diaz (Edison)
145 – Gian-Pier Yanez (Servite) vs. Zach Lear (Orange Lutheran)
152 – Scott Masterson (Servite) vs. Damon Couch (Santa Margarita)
160 – Aaron Lopez (Edison) vs. Carlos Arana (Esperanza)
171 – Sean Datte (Tesoro) vs. Scott Sire (Edison)
189 – Morgan McIntosh (Calvary Chapel) vs. Weston Hawkins (Edison)
215 – William Knowles (Calvary Chapel) vs. Michael Maierhofer (Capistrano Valley)
285 – Wyatt Baker (Servite) vs. Noel Molina (Laguna Hills)

Morgan McIntosh will lead off this show

Tonight we’re starting at 189 pounds (Morgan McIntosh-Weston Hawkins). That means we will finish with the 171 pound match (Sean Datte-Scott Sire). Hopefully, everything in between will go smoothly and quickly.

Also, I think it is time for us to do something to liven up the heavyweight weight class. What do you think? Allow them to use foreign objects?

I’m posted up in a corner of the gym. Whatever it takes to get close to the electrical outlet.

5:55 p.m

And here comes tonight’s competitors

Mean looking group. I wouldn’t want to mess with them. I’m looking forward to the Dean O’Bourke-Sammy Cano match at 112s. They faced other Saturday at Five Counties with O’Bourke winning.

Also, Damon Couch-Scott Masterson are meeting again. Masterson edged Couch, 4-3 earlier this season in the Trinity League dual. Earlier, Couch pinned Masterson at the Mann Classic. Who will win the rubber match? STAY TUNED!

6:08 p.m.

Calvary Chapel duo does what it do

We’re underway. ..Morgan McIntosh (189) defeated Weston Hawkins (Edison), 11-4 in the first match of the night.

Tank Knowles faced mini-tank Mike Maierhofer at 215. Knowles was victories, 6-3.

Wyatt “The Beast” Baker of Servite, who placed second at Five Counties, defeated Noel Molina of Laguna Hills,5-0 at heavyweight. Baker is going to be a force the rest of the season. Good-bye big guys, hello little guys.

All wrestlers get mini-statues when they’re done. I want one.

Also, there’s a bird in here

Sammy Cano evens his series with Dean O’Bourke

I can’t wait for the rubber match between these two later this month. O’Bourke beat Cano at Five Counties, Cano returned the favor, 6-4 here. The Santa Ana-Calvary Chapel dual is set for Jan. 29. See you there.

The Santa Margarita little guys are opening up big cans of you-know-what. Jared Fier pinned Johnny Sanchez at 103 and Cameron Carlberg tech’d Luke McDonald at 125.

In between, Colin Contreras (Servite) defeated Blake Lowrie (Laguna Hills), 7-4.

The Tesoro wall is obstructing my view

There are about seven or eight Tesoro coaches, wrestlers, fans, parents (OK, maybe only two, but they’re in my way.  I will let them slide.

Alec Robbie (Tesoro) just pinned Michael Vargas of El Dorado.Vargas was seventh at Five Counties.

Zach Fishman (San Clemente) majored Pablo Gomez (Santa Ana), 11-3. In other news, the bird is still flying in the gym and Charles Chavez, who didn’t placed at Five Counties, just majored Victor Diaz of Edison, 16-6.

Four matches left! Four matches left!

Is this the Trinity League finals?

It certainly looks that way with these last two matches, first at 145 pounds. Gian-Pier Yanez (Servite) winning 8-6, overtime decision over Zach Lear of Orange Lutheran.Yanez then walked away with a white bucket. I don’t want to know what he’s doing with it.

Then, Damon Couch (Santa Margarita) defeated league rival Scott Masterson, 7-4 at 152 pounds. Couch now leads their 2-1. However, there are three possible head-to-head meetings remaining at league finals, CIF and Masters. Imagine if they faced each other three more times.

Wait, here’s an all-Sunset League affair…Aaron Lopez (Edison) with the pin over Carlos Arana of Esperanza at 160.

Sean Datte brings down the curtain

Datte (Tesoro) closed the night with a first-period pin of Scott Sire of Edison at 171 pounds.

Datte is bad news. Stay away from him.

That’s it for tonight. The wrestling season is spiraling toward Bakersfield.

Great coverage Daniam, to be honest the bird information was probably not necessary but I did enjoy it. I like that it was more of a casual story than all stuffy.. (don’t know if that makes sense) but my point is…. great story, good reading material! Go Saints Wrestling
