The Santa Margarita football head coaching job became vacant this morning, and Mission Viejo football coach Bob Johnson said he might apply for it.
While Johnson said he is very happy and satisfied at Mission, he could be interested in pursuing the Santa Margarita position that became available when the resignation of Coach Mike Jacot at Santa Margarita was announced by the school this morning.
“I wouldn’t say I wouldn’t,” said Johnson, when asked if he would apply at Santa Margarita. “Sure, I’d take a look at it. But I love the place where I’m at.”
Here are portions of Santa Margarita’s official statement on Jacot’s resignation:
“Santa Margarita Catholic High School announces today the resignation of Mike Jacot as the school’s head football coach. Jacot cited personal reasons for stepping down.
“He will stay on as the school’s first strength and conditioning coordinator.
“Jacot was 38-38 during his seven seasons with the Eagles. In 2006, Jacot was named Coach of the Year (OC Register).
“Santa Margarita principal Ray Dunne: ‘One of the most striking characteristics of Mike is his leadership, which is based on high ethical and moral standards, for which we are very appreciative. During his seven years as head coach, the SM football program has been faith based and has emphasized character development. I look forward to continued association with Coach Jacot in his new role as the school’s first coordinator of strength and conditioning.’”
Johnson’s sons Bret and Rob are on the Mission Viejo coaching staff. Bob said Rob seems to have more head-coaching aspirations than Bret does at this time.

Well then, here’s an opportunity for one of the biggest opponents of private school vs public school hsfb to put his money where his mouth is and display his true skills as one of the finest. It would take tremendous courage for him to make the move and I for one don’t believe that he will.
It would run smack in the face of all the statements and acts from Johnson over the years regarding the advantages of “no borders”, if he were to produce anything less than a CIF Championship every other year, or so, at a program in the backyard (huge, as it has become for MV) of his current program.
The Trinity League would welcome his jump with open arms, but I have sincere doubts as to the genuine intent of Coach Johnson. Sometimes, as hard as it is to believe by the masses, these “interests” proclaimed by some top coaches, are nothing but ploys to get their current admins to add to the coffers, by way of benefits and hidden compensation.
There are plenty of qualified coaches that are deserving of a prestigious position like that of RSM and if Mr.Dunne would like, I can recommend several worthy candidates with ties that he and the President share, if you catch my drift. Let’s all hope that a proper search and evaluation occurs.
Open arms? Nobody wants a stinker for a coach. Toner? That would be great for Servite. Maybe MV will be getting good talent soon.
Toner gets my vote for SM.
mazzotta but he loves La Habra would be better than Bob
Everyone knows where i stand on the recruiting shenanigans that
proliferate throughout the county. Private schools are licenced to
recruit, public has no such licence, but would think nothing of tainting
their championship with a few recruited players as well. Nevertheless, accusations of such illicit behavior have followed Bob Johnson like prospective quarterback talent to one of his camps. I think the move to Santa Margarita would kill two birds with one stone. First Bob would immediately become an accredited recruiter, fully licenced to do as he pleased. The recruiting (illegal) stigma would
would vanish, bringing Bob relief from lingering speculation. Secondly, it would open the door for his son Rob to take over at M.V.. Bob can still keep coaching until he feels the time is right and Rob could get his show on the road. I’ts a win (recruit), win situation.
Dana Hills would have been CIF champions in 2004 if recruting had not gone on under Bob Johnson’s reign that season, considering a good portion of the players on that years team lived in the Dana boundary. That being said those players wanted to go to the esteemed program. Maybe just maybe Bob could pull from Tesoro and Mission and even some public schools further south like Dana and SC and bring SM’s program back to prominence.
