OC Varsity ~ High school sports talk by the staff of the Orange County Register

Servite-Edison, the morning after

December 13th, 2009, 1:58 am · · posted by

football_icon– Edison coach Dave White said the Chargers’ lack of a power running game was a special detriment on a night as dreary as Saturday, and he was right.. They got outrushed 187-64 and had the ball four-and-a-half fewer mnutes than did Servite.

– Both teams combined to go 17 for 43 in the air and converted four of 28 third downs, although Edison was successful four of six times on fourth down.

– Three of Servite’s top six tacklers in this game return next year, and two are sophomores.

– Jordan Zumwalt, Edison’s linebacker/receiver, is committed to Stanford but you sort of wish he was going to the Naval Academy. He’s a Marine if there ever was one.

– The Southern Section is amazingly competitive and fluid. No Mater Dei, no Los Alamitos, no Long Beach Poly, no Orange Lutheran, no Santa Margarita in the Final Four of Pac-5. You see Tesoro in last year’s finals, Dana Hills in this year’s second round. But don’t bet against Mater Dei and Poly trying to impose a little normalcy next year, not that Servite and Edison are going anywhere.

It was a mudder ( Servite) vs. a finesse, turf (Edison) horse. Obviously
the conditions played into Servite’s hand. Servite. regardless of the conditions, played to win, early on. Whereas, it appeared Edison
was playing not to lose, early and was forced to play to win, when behind.

Ever since the MD game this Friar squad has been making a statement. They came hard every play. The march thru the Trinity became such a workmanlike performance with lunchbucket resolve.
By the time the playoffs started, The Friars were a well tuned, battle tested Black Machine, treading over every opponent, regardless of “Wow” factor or unbelieving witnesses.
A QB that showed skill and nerve of a neuro surgeon and executed (only 2 int’s all season!) plays like a pro of Peyton or Patton’s ilk. Key upperclassmen demonstrated leadership from experience that brings class. The defense was young at the start, but became the clearcut, best honed defense, with an edge refined by hardhitting, relentless aggression and determined grit unparrallaled.
The Coach, often scrutinized, had the resolve of a man resolute in conviction and deaft of naysayers. The entire staff was molded by the glue of their leader’s intensity.
This is a TEAM that won’t be denied their goal. State Champs and the finest hsfb team in all the land!

You could just see it on the Edison staff and players faces from the beginning. They had everything to lose while Servite had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Look at the entry onto the field after half. Edison came onto the field business like and serious while Servite decided to do some “belly skimming” across the turf, looking loose and having fun.

The second half proved just that. Edison was wound as tight as an old clock while Servite was as loose as a goose.

While the weather did play a factor in the game, the preparation to play in the rain was the key. Who knows? Maybe Servite practiced all week in the swimming pool reading themselves for a game in puddles the size of a pool while edison practied in the gym.

U know in reality I think all you teams from Orange County are way over–rated AND U WOULDNT STAND A CHANCE IF U WERE IN A REAL LEAGUE LIKE THE MARMONTE NEXT YEAR. IN VENTURA COUNTY

WESTLAKE MOORPARK ST BONAVENTURE OAKS CHRISTIAN

NEWBURY PARK . SERVITE AND EDISON AND EVEN MATER DEI WOULDNT EVEN WIN LEAGUE OVER HERE…..

BTW HARRY WELCH WIN A REAL CHAMPIONSHIP U COULDNT HANDLE THE BIG LEAGUES AT CANYON SO U LEFT AND WENT TO GO COACH AT PE-WEE LEAGUE WITH ST MARGARETS WHO SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES PLAYING IN THAT DIVISION. PLAY SOME REAL TEAMS DIRTY HARRY

And the Marmonte has how many state bowl representatives? Horhay, you sound like fans in Bakersfield,Fresno/Clovis and the Inland Empire have sounded like for years. Your area and the aforementioned areas lack what some of the best have proven to display year in and year out…consistency. Every once in a while, there is an outstanding group of seniors that will lead a good team to state recognition. Best of luck in the future.
