Berths for the CIF State bowl games will be announced Sunday, after section finals are played.
Edison has the most direct path to a bowl game. If the Chargers beat Servite in the Pac-5 Division championship game, they almost certainly will be selected to play in either the Open Division game against the best team from Northern California or in the Division I game for large-enrollment schools.
If Edison wins, its toughest competition for the Open Division berth could be Oaks Christian, which is ranked just above the Chargers in the overall state rankings by calhisports.com.
Servite likely needs some help to go with a victory over Edison to reach a bowl game. The Friars are a Division II team because of their enrollment, and they are behind L.A. City Section team Crenshaw in the state rankings. Crenshaw enters its City title game undefeated; Servite has one loss. The Friars must beat Edison and probably need Crenshaw to lose to extend their season.
This weekend’s games will impact all the selections. Until then, check out the state rankings below.

What about the remarkable season for Garden Grove? They are unbeaten and the story is certainly worthy of some space.
wow!!!! fryer actually posted something without mentioning mater dei. i’m surprised he did’nt give the article to someone else.
These Garden Grove kids don’t care who they are against…. They just line up and play…. They will not Quit!!!! Go Argos!!!!!
Yes the ARGOS have had a remarkable season. My kids and wife graduated from GROVE and we will be at the game on Friday night. But a state championship? It would be cool and they certainly are better than the 20th in OC that Fryer gives them. Who knows? If they win tommorrow and earn the opportunity why deny them the chance? Did someone say Hoosiers?
Sorry dontbahater garden Grove is not Hoosiers. Everyone acts like they sucked and had no shot to even get by the first round. They won the league title last year and returned most of their players. They won the league title this and was clearly the favorite coming in. As far as their record goes the only tough teams they played were Norwalk and La Mirada. The should have won all the other games they were better. They proved they were a good team by defeating Norwalk. They had a good season and dedicated to their lost friend but this was no cinderella story. They should have made it to the semi’s for sure and showed why they deserved to be in the finals.
does anyone know where the all league teams are?
Agree with Gatordad,
I will be at the GGHS game. They have had a charmed season and are playing with extreme passion and emotion. They do NOT get the press like the “big boys.” But I know one thing, at the end of the game, the team who played with the greater level of emotion will be victorious. GO ARGO’S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Matadores!!!! GG should thank the refs after beating Norwalk. Three TD’s called back on penalties. One GG drive that 90% of the yards gain were on penalties. It’s sad that the refs we’re such a factor in that game. Let the kids play. GO MATADORES!!!!
I don’t believe that strength of schedule is a “genuine” criteria, if Oceanside can seriously be considered ahead of Servite. Any realistic citeria, other than a Servite victory over Edison ,is a derelict reflection of a true state championship and anyone to project this thought should think twice. Period.
Grove has been doing good because they’re in a horrible league and division! It’s as simple as that!!
Not just league but yes the division isnt as strong as others. But thats where they belong and had a good year. They are a good team from that division and finished second losing to La Mirada. I wouldnt call it a horrible division but its lower and thats where schools like Grove belong.
Can’t anything be done for Servite since their enrollment is all boys?
I am new to California. How do the bowls work? It appears to be Nor Cal team vs So cal team? How many bowls are there and how are teams selected?
Oaks Christian has played a weak schedule and I just can not believe they are ranked so high.
They have played only 3 teams, of their last 13 games, against teams that are ranked in the top 1000 in the country. Servite has played 10 teams and Edison has played 9 teams ranked in the top 1000 in the country. Now these are schedules which are worthy of a state championship bowl.
I hope these Bowl games don’t turn into what the college BCS is like where strength of schedule means nothing.
I am sorry but Oaks Christian has proven nothing and is in no way deserving of #1 in the state.
Just a thought
Too many celebs at Oaks Christian. They have the clout cuz of the darn celebs. Both Servite and Edison would make a nice little scooby-snack out of those boys.
fryer acts as if the sun rises and sets in the butts of all the upper division big time popular media schools but theres some dynomite talent at schools like garden grove too!!!!
Well, Oak Christian should be out since they lost to Serra. Right! If Servite beats Edison do they not have a State berth? Can someone please explain this too me….I would appreciate it.
If Servite beats Edison tonite, who is the real #1 team in the state, then there is no way the folks at ESPN ( they determine) can deny Servite against DeLaSalle in the Open. And DeLaSalle has two losses! Albeit against strong programs.
The reason that the Friars undertook such a tough schedule is because of the pretense that strength of schedule was a dominant factor in determining state playoff consideration. That remains to be seen. I believe politics will raise an ugly head.
Ya, what guild said.. If Servite wins the game, then they should be entitled to play for the same thing that their opponents are playing for. It would be fair that they have the same thing to fight for in this upcoming game.. Who can disagree with that?
Nice to see my team in the SoCal Top 10, even though our season is done.
Grove is ranking in the top 25 is well deserved but no higher than 20. The 20 schools ranked ahead are much better.
