San Clemente senior Jacob Mourer scored with 1:07 left in the fourth period to lift the South past the North, 14-13, in the Orange County all-star boys water polo match at Valencia.
Mourer finished with a match-high five goals. Northwood’s Kyle Kim-E and Beckman’s Kevin Zepfel each added three goals for the South.
Thomas Patterson of El Modena posted a team-high four goals for the North.
Both teams will play in the Southern California all-star tournament Dec. 13 at Norco.
Where are the rosters for this game?
Rosters for both teams were handed out to spectators at the game, but I don’t know if they are available on-line.
All-in-all, a very fun event, nicely run by the coaches and great for the seniors to play in.
rosters were handed out at game but without cap #’s so it was difficult to know who was who? game was very competitive and back and forth. all kids got plenty of time and it was nice to see them get recognized for 4 years of hard work. pace was like any all star game, slow and friendly for all of 1 minute, than the juices started flowing and they got after it. nothing dirty just physica, clean, hard polo.
It was a lot of fun to watch. Looked like the kids had good time.
It has been a fun 4 years watching and learning the sport of water polo. I wish I had seen this sport a long time ago.
Hey folks – my senior was playing elsewhere that day, but might have been interested in this event. How’d the boys find out about it?
Polofever: The rosters had cap numbers for the South, but that didn’t help too much – there were four number 10′s out for the South at one time! (They brought their high school caps, so lots of overlapping numbers). Not sure how the boys knew when the ref indicated that #10 was excluded…..
Dontknow: The players were selected by their high school coaches to tryout. for the teams Tryouts were held the week prior.
The kids play in the Southern California All-Star tournament in Norco this Sunday, which should be fun, assuming its not pouring rain….
Dontknow-The high school coaches are supposed to tell all their seniors about the tryouts and games. Any senior can attend the tryouts. Some seniors will choose not to attend because they feel they are not all star calibur. But some do and get on the team. It depends who the all star coach is. There is no limit to the amount of players because some all star coaches will pick more than others and they surely pick their own highschool team players. And don’t forget that Dan Albano posted the tryout dates, times and locations right here on OC Varsity. GO DAN! there are always duplicate caps because each player selected is told to bring their high school cap to the games, hence the duplicate numbers.
Was the ODP program tryouts for the 92-93, and the others, the same day as the All Star Game? I thought that the ODP program was not supposed to interfere with the high school program per Guy Baker. Who is the coordinator of the ODP program that is not being consistant with Guy Baker’s agenda? What could be the reason for such a mishap?
With all the possible overlaps in programing for ODP, HS and Club activities, it would seem like it is almost impossibility not to have scheduling issues. I believe that the ODP schedule was done in September but the schedule for the Allstar game was not calendared till the week of Cif finals (mid Nov.). It may not be an ODP issue
The All Star games occur the same weekends, year after year.
I believe the same person who does the scheduling for the ODP was responsible for the ill fated USA Water Polo southern section tournament after Thanksgiving.
It is my understanding that the ODP schedule was done at a meeting in September by Guy Baker and Staff, Coastal and SoPac Zone Chairs and reps, ODP coaches, Cal Cup reps and the lady who catered the meeting (joke).
From what I have heard there was a lot of time spent on the schedule with input from 12 to 14 people.
Additionally, it sounds like a lot of the HS coaches didn’t let their players know about the tryouts for the All Star teams
Polo Fan has it about right. The ODP schedule was done collectively by a large group that represented both Coastal and SoPac zones. It is unfortunate that ODP fell on the same Sunday as the All Star game. Could it have been avoided…without question. Unfortunately it was not on any of the zone calendars that we looked at, at the meeting. And, in that the All Star game, albeit a HS event, is a zone sanctioned event (because it is out of the CIF season of sport) it should have been, as long as, the Host had put the event on the schedule prior to September.
At this point, although after the fact, the All Star game has been noted on the calendar for next year’s ODP scheduling meeting. The good news is that players that tried out for the All Star teams but opted for ODP this last weekend, are still on the rosters for this weekends SoCal Regional All Star tournament at Norco HS on Sunday. Per John Kulicich, The North OC All Stars play their first game at 9:50 and the South OC All Stars play their first game at 11:30. He was not sure who their opponents were.

Just had a thought that someone who has had boys go through wp programs would know when the all star games were held in December. Are you saying that John Kulicich didn’t put this on the zone calendar as he is the coordinator for the All Star Games and CIF each year.
