girls_tennis_iconFirst off, congratulations to all the girls who reached the Round of 16.

It’s a big accomplishment and can’t be overlooked.

In case you missed the participants, here they are: singles/doubles

Big day: Dana Hills freshman Alyssa Smith. She was paired against Campbell Hall’s Sarah Lee in the Round of 16. Smith beat Lee in the team’s nonleague match earlier this season, but Lee returned the favor in the Division I championship two weeks ago. Smith won Thursday in straight sets6-4, 6-1. She followed that up with a win over Ontario Christian’s Nikki Sanders to reach the semifinals.

Youth be served: Smith will face sophomore Krista Hardebeck of El Modena in the semis. In doubles, University’s sophomore Kyra Scott and freshman Hayley Thompson are in the semis. Hardebeck hasn’t lost this season, and had to beat previously undefeated Megan Heneghan of Beckman in the quarterfinals. Hardebeck won 6-2, 6-1.

Not to be outdone: Orange Lutheran senior Kaitlyn Christian and Corona del Mar’s doubles team and seniors Melissa Matsuoka and Hailey Hogan. They’ve been here before. Christian is in her third straight semifinal, and finished runner-up last year. Matsuoka and Hogan reached the doubles semis as sophomores, but didn’t compete as juniors.

Great seasons: So many good players are done. Dana Hills’ Joanna Smith lost in the semifinals to Campbell Hall’s Sabrina Santamaria 6-2, 6-1. Smith played No. 1 singles for the Dolphins this season and is sure to be in the mix next year as a senior. Loara’s Jenn Cornea pushed Heneghan in the Round of 16, taking the opening set before falling 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, in a well-played match. El Modena’s Nicole Koehly also had thoughts of an upset, winning the first set against Ontario Christian’s Brittany Sanders before going down in three, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. And in doubles, there was a terrific match between Dana Hills’ Cassidy Spearman and Jessica Perez, both freshman, against St. Margaret’s Hayley Miller and Tiffany Cheng. Dana Hills won in three, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals before falling to Redondo Union.
