This week’s top football matchups:
Trabuco Hills (11-1) vs. Tustin (11-1)
Friday, 7 p.m. at Tustin High
Outlook: The bottom half of the Southwest Division bracket brings the third-seeded Mustangs to Tustin to face the second-seeded Tillers.
Trabuco Hills, which lost in the Southwest Division semifinals last year, enters on a nine-game winning streak. Over the past four games, the Mustangs are averaging 48.2 points a game and are allowing 6.5 points.
The Mustangs rushed for 240 yards in a 53-0 first-round victory over Savanna.
Last week, quarterback A.J. Josue completed 11 of 17 passes for 227 yards, but all six of the team’s touchdowns were scored on the ground in a 45-6 victory over Pacifica.
The Tillers have allowed 21 points in their last five games.
Tustin opened the playoffs with a 31-14 victory over Valencia and 63-0 last week over Huntington Beach.
Anthony Wilkerson has really kicked things into a new gear. He rushed for 329 yards and four touchdowns against Valencia.
Last week, he turned the game into a video game, rushing for 355 yards on 18 carries, scoring five touchdowns.
Is this the week that he finally passes DeShaun Foster’s single-game rushing record (379 yards)?

break deshaun fosters record? Wilkerson wont get more than 100 yards on the mustangs defense.
“Wilkerson wont get more than 100 yards on the mustangs defense”??!! I like your little “daydream”; hopes it’s entertaining while it lasts….because Friday night’s going to be a nightmare for your little mustangs. Hope trabuco’s able to count the number of treadmarks Tustin’s offense is gonna leave on your mustangs defense, after Wilkerson’s done with your defense. It’s gonna be a long night…..
Tustin by 21…at least.
Roll Tillers Roll.
How many other sign on’s do you have besides MJ and carolina23 ?
That’s not important Sugar.
Lol … Prediction. Tustin wins 35-21. Wilkerson will have over 200 yards rushing and 4 TDs. Only one team in the past 20 some odd games has held this workhorse under 100 yards…Not gonna happen.
Yup, and that only team was Orange Lutheran this year…because AW didn’t even play! hahahahahahha
correction: “HOPE” it’s….
If Wilkerson doesn’t break the record in this game he’ll do it in the Finals =D
But that’s where it all ends. La Habra will, once again take the title
Wilkerson gets record/ La Habra gets title
Wilkerson could’ve broken that record last week easily, but Miller pulled him after the 3rd qtr.
Now this is the game Ive been waiting for, quite a match-up and its gonna be a great one…these two teams are both worthy of making it to the finals and winning it all, this years Southwest division is so close in talent with these two teams and La Habra clearly the best of the rest……For those who think Wilkerson isnt gonna get his…..cmon man…he is the best RB in the county and hoping to contain him to under 175 is a feat in itself….i figure he goes for 200 + a few scores and just doesnt have enough in his tank to carry Tustin to victory…..this is the game where no passing game comes to haunt a fine Tustin football team…Trabuco with its smashmouth style of the 2 fine running backs and a good passing game prevail by 2 touchdowns 42-28…setting up a re-match of last year thrilling semi-final with the Highlanders of La Habra…….dont ya just love football!!!!
First off, Wilkerson will have PLENTY “in the tank” because he hardly touches the field on defense; which gives him lots of energy on offense. As for Tustin’s passing game, you might be surprised come Friday night (wink wink…lol) And Trabuco’s not the TRUE smashmouth team like Tustin. NO BODY does smashmouth like the Tillers. But it’ll be a good game for sure.
Tustin by 21…at least.
Roll Tillers Roll!
Oh, and please don’t forget Tustin’s really good defense with its 20 INTs!!!…tops in the county.
Wilkerson lives in Foothill Ranch. Where do all the kids in Foothill Ranch go to HS? Trabuco Hills. So why is he at Tustin?
MJ your right Tustin does own the smashmouth title but if ya never seen TH watch this kid Decillo…very good and punches ya right in the mouth….but i disagree on outcome ….and keep winking partner…NO PASSINFG GAME!!! will end the tillers season…..
You know what??!!….you’re about the only one I like talking smack with…seriously! hahahahahahhhaha. It’s all good though.
Hopefully my Tillers will get it done Friday night . Hope the mustangs bring their lunch because it’s time to go to work!
Roll Tillers Roll!
just to touch on plenty in the tank comment…..well he better cuz he is gonna touch the ball 40+ times and these boys from TH they bring it….Wilkerson isnt seeing Savanna or HB he is seeing one heck of a hard hitting defense that are all jacked up about laying the wood to this kid…..
I seem to recall Wilkerson still putting up 230 rushing yards and a TD against La Habra last year – by far a better team than Trabuco. So stop dreaming about Wilkerson not getting his against the mustangs.
See you at “The Show” Friday night….
And TH isn’t playing “Savanna or HB” either! And Tustin’s defense hits like an 18-wheeler too! Don’t you just love how that door swings both ways??!! HA!
The “ironmen” of Tustin are on a mission to get that rematch with La Habra. THills has a great team, but until they prove they can stop Wilkerson, and DW offense I don’t think they can. La Habra played Tustin in the finals last year and Wilkerson still put up big numbers in a losing effort. Remember even La Habra couldn’t stop him, they just contained him (they kept him out of the endzone).
Tustin’s Defense is the best I’ve seen this year in the SW Div. (Sorry LH fans I just call them as I see them). Big hitters and speed, no team closes on the ball like Tustin (other than Los Al).
Tustin over THIlls 28-21.
True that Wilkerson lives in Foothill Ranch, which is a feeder to THHS. Word is that Wilkerson’s dad is a teacher or administrator at Tustin, which is why he is there.
Like any great back at any level, you cannot stop him you can only hope to contain him. He will get his yards, but that does not mean that Tustin will win. Game will come down to key defensive stops, turn-overs and special teams. It will also come down to tempo and who dictates the game to who…If THHS can jump out front and contain Wilkerson then they will be hard to beat. If Tustin gets a lead and THHS cannot contain running game then Tustin wins..Check common opponents – Foothill: Tustin beat 35 -12 and TH beat 35 – 0. HB: TH beat 51 – 10 (and game was not that close) and Tusin beat 63 – 0. Very similar scores! If both teams play well and do not commit any turn-overs then game will be close – too tough to call. Like I said, keys to victory for either team are defensive stops, turn-overs and special teams…Should be a great game!
Yo UH….. your thoughts on the lack of a passing game for the tillers…in that final last year if they could have even had a bit of a scheme for passing it may have given La Habra a bit more to think about…..thus they run the ball all but 3 passing attempts and the Highlanders lock into run….and all year long the same old story for tustin…..unless they pull something out of a hat there doomed again…trabuco is good….real good…maybe the best team in the division…gonna be a good one and im still goin with Trabuco, i dont think at this level of playoffs that you can tell everyone your gonna run it 50 times a game and win….
“i dont think at this level of playoffs that you can tell everyone your gonna run it 50 times a game and win….”
Tustin’s accomplished that already; just haven’t won a title doing it. (IF that’s what you really mean).
Just wait until Friday, and see what happens
BigHS- I’ve said it all year long. To beat Tustin you have to stop the run and DW offense. Everyone knows what the Tillers bring, yet so far no one has stopped them. THills is a very good team, they were a good team last year, as well. But, until I see someone that can stop Tusins offense, I don’t think anyone can. Tustin’s defense is tremendous.
If THills can contain Wilkerson the way La Habra did last year, then they got a chance. Simple in theory, difficult in practice.
UHWarrior-Wilkerson did score a touchdown last in the finals. Just wanted to clear that up.
Correction, last YEAR…
Cox3 Sports – Game of the Week will be televising the Trabuco Hills vs. Tustin!! Watch it tape delayed Friday night at 11:30pm or watch the LIVE webcast at http://www.cox3.com.
Good choice! By far the most intruiging and dynamic match-up of the week.
I gotta agree totally this is gonna be the game of the week……Southwest doesnt get respect and it didnt help that OLU beat Tustin without the Counties top player bar none….. Trabuco Hills is a class act and both worthy of advancing i personnally casnnot wait to see the outcome and wish nothing but the best to each squad…..
I agree…I hope that both teams play their best and don’t shoot themselves in the foot. If one or the other does, however, and makes untimely mistakes or turn-overs then either team is good enough to capitalize on those mistakes and turn the game into a route. If both teams play up to their potential and capabilities then it goes down to the wire in a classic…
Dont ya just LOVE football!!!!!!!
Special teams will decide this game and nobody is close to TH
IF it comes down to special teams, then I agree that TH will likely win…They have one of the best kickers, holders and long snappers in the County, not to mention great speed coverage on punts and kick-offs as well as kick returns and punt returns…
Tustin by 21….at least.
Roll Tillers Roll.
MJ you trippin!!! but i love your passion for your club……and to all that read this ….Wilkerson is by far the best back in both LA and OC counties he will get his no doubt but it will not…REPEAT..will not be enough to knock off TH …..lets go watvch some Football…..Good Luck to your Tillers MJ…dont ya just wish you had a passing game??????
BIGHS- Wilkerson is the best back in the OC, but not LA. Jesse Callier is the best back in LA co. and is ranked no. 1 in the state by Maxpreps. He has 2800+ yards for the year with 43 TD’s, and is committed to go to Univ. of Washington. He plays at Warren HS in Downey, CA. He has been putting up crazy numbers the last two years.
Gotcha warrior and havent seen the kid but definetly heard of him…..so im biased i live in Irvine and see alot of Quezada and Wilkerson……Wilk is a pretty bad boy with loads of talent but i hear ya………..
Tough one to call. At this point best to concur with the Warrior. UHW has to have the highest winning percentage of any poster out there.
Tustin 28 TH 24
Mr. Wilkerson gets 199 and 4 td’s.
TH has already shut down two of the top backs this year, from Estancia and Savana. Granted Tustin’s Wilkerson numbers are very impressive, but TH has two great backs of its own, plus a good quarterback. This should be one heck of a game!
After reading all your posts, I still got to tell you after seeing both teams in action this year I honestly think that you have two great offenses playing against two great defenses. This is why they are both in the semi’s. The key to this game as to any great matchup, is who makes the most mistakes. While TH has 28 fumbles on the year, they only lost 7 of them and only threw 6 (?) int’s on the year. Tustin Has thrown one pick, and lost 5 fumbles. Both teams have at least 25 takeaways on Defense and can bring the wood. So Who misses blocks, makes dumb penalties, misses an assignment blows a tackle, and turns the ball over the least will win. I think Wilkerson will get 200 yards and 35 carries at least, and it will be more yards and less carries if TH’s Defense doesn’t stop him from breaking the long run. I think Tustin has the edge in this game, but only if they execute their offense. They don’t need a passing game when they have a great running back, thats how they won it all in 97 with DeShaun Foster.
diesel- Just wanted to clear somethin’ up if I may….Tustin didn’t win it all in ’97, we lost to Santa Margarita in the finals. Both teams put on hell of a show though.
too bad th didnt develop their passing game. wouldve been good if the receivers could hang on to ochoas passes. he lead the team through the tougher teams you must admit. josue is speed and ochoa is strength what a great combo had the players been utilized that way
