Calhoun’s Games to Watch: Servite vs. Mission Viejo

football_blog6This week’s top football matchups:

Servite (11-1) vs. Mission Viejo (12-0)
Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Cerritos College

Outlook: Part I of the Pac-5 Division can’t-miss, must-see, drop-what-you’re-doing semifinal features Trinity League champions Servite against the South Coast League champs Mission Viejo.

The Friars received a big boost of news earlier this week when two-way lineman Kirifi Taula (broken arm) was cleared to return to action.

Taula will give the Friars a pass-rushing threat against a Mission Viejo offensive line that has been outstanding all year. I’m sure he will see time on the offensive line as well.

If Servite can protect for quarterback Cody Fajardo, then the Friars will be in business.

However, the Mission Viejo defense specializes in making Friday night’s brutal for the opposing quarterbacks.

Which leads me back to Fajardo. The Diablos haven’t seen anybody like him. He has rushed for 856 yards and 14 touchdowns and he has completed 72.4 percent of his passes (144 of 199) for 1,949 yards with 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

The Friars escaped with a 21-18 victory over Long Beach Poly in the second round thanks to a late blocked field goal.

Mission Viejo hasn’t had a game decided in the fourth quarter since last year.

This will be interesting.

  • The Guild says:

The eventual OC Player of the Year will very likely be the difference in this game. The Friars would have been just as dominant in the same conference that the Diablos played. DC has it right when he states that MV hasn’t seen anyone like Fajardo.
This will be a game that showcases two swarming defenses with several key players on each side, but my belief is that the Friars have more leadership on the field that will counter the outstanding coaching of team Johnson’s.
Servite in a great battle that all should want to witness. The victor of this titanic will most likely be the Pac 5 Champs. Servite’s time to shine!

    • MJ says:

“The eventual OC Player of the Year will very likely be the difference in this game”

Wait a minute, hold up, Tustin’s Anthony Wilkerson is playing against trabuco hills Friday night.

      • The Guild says:

Wilk can’t throw as well as Fajardo and will be Offensive Player of the Year. Fajardo will be OC P of Y.

  • keeping it real says:

I would like to congratulate the MV fans for giving Edison High School the walk thru they had last Friday night. Seriously? your second placed team from your league plays like that? Wowwerz.

    • 2002tony says:

This post is just for Keep it real, and I would not say this to anyone else or give the reference to any of the Sunset league teams except in this post.

Your Welcome keep it real!!! I would have liked to have passed along the same congratulatory message to you and the rest of the sunset league, but none of your teams other than Edison were good enough to make it to the second round.

  • jeffrey says:

i am a servite guy too but the number 2 team in mission’s league, dana hills, beat the number 2 team from servite’s league, orange lutheran

  • bighsfootballfan says:

Yes they will meet on the field of play….but this one isnt gonna be as close as alot of you think….Mission Viejo is the best team in the OC and LA Counties including the vaunted Oaks Christian….they basically waltz through Servite who i tend to believe are a bit over=rated….very good but not as good a Edision, Lakewood, nor MV…..MV fairly easy 35-10

    • ringmaster says:

1st time I have to agree with bhsfbf. overated is aander statement.watched both on tv and saw a big difference, mv s superfast and physical defense. sorry7 guild but it doesent matter how many leaders you have on the field, its called man o man, 11 on 11 in your face game time, and I believe testestorone levels will be a big factor and those south coast teams seem to have alot of it. and player of the year, only if friar water boy has something to say about it. get in line behind wilkerson , viles, quesada ect ect ect!!!!!

      • Samoanbeef says:

Mission Viejo is probably gonna win but there is no one person on the Mission Viejo roster that can stop Kirrif Taula. The QB for Mission Viejo better be praying that it’s not Man on Man football because you will need at least 2 or 3 people on Kirrif at all times to slow him down.

    • 2002tony says:

Big, Servite overrated?!!. They are every bit as good as their ranking has them. I will agree that Edison and MV are better teams in my opinion, but to say overrated is just uncalled for.

    • Standing Room Only says:

so……if Servite is a bit over rated, and MV lost to Servite, that makes MV?

Good thing you’re just a fan.

  • Paul says:

Loove this game, the first real test MV will face all year! However, Sevite will NOT be able to put up big numbers against Rob Johnsons defense and you know MV’s offense will put up at least 35. MV vs Edison December 12th, thats the real game!!!!

  • Standing Room Only says:

Servite vs Mission Viejo will be an epic battle. A good game for sure.

Now to the few Servite faithful who think MV will just walk all over us:

    CIRCA 2005:
On paper, Long Beach Poly was supposed to dominate Servite in the playoffs. Poly was and is an excellent program, had the most alumni playing in the NFL, and were just supposed to destroy Servite.

    CREDO – it’s a way of life.

    Good Luck Servite

  • Fighting Fryer says:

MV is a great program and their ranking is justified. To say Servite is over-rated is absurd and just an un-educated response from some who should caution what they will see Friday night when these fine teams meet. Of course most want to see a MV and Edison final but Edison should worry about their game against Lakewood Saturday because if they think that is a cake walk they have another thing coming, Edison has a great team and beat Servite with a dominating game earlier this season, but that was a wake up call that Servite needed. Have they been good since then YES!!! Have they had some struggles YES! Have they been missing some key players YES! but the bottom-line they have found a way to win. Cody Fajardo does not get all the credit he deserves but he is a fine leader and more importantly he wants to win and he wants the title. With that I am going with a Servite-Lakewood final and MV and Edison will be watching on December 12th waiting for next year at a shot at the title.

    GO FRIARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Glen Chervin says:

Servite is not overrated. They are the 3rd best team in Orange County.

    • 2002tony says:

NIce post Fighting Fryer, and you have hit on one key component about this game and every game except the Edison game, the bottom line was they found a way to win. I dont think there will be any last min TD in this game to save the day and I do believe MV will win, but at this level of play, and how good Servite and MV are, you can never count out either of these teams.

  • whatshisname says:

you servite people sound like these friggin demos trying to force health care down our throats, its apipe dream thats not going to happen. this will be the 1st time fajardo and nichols a group of afst and furious surf roids looking to take their collective heads off, and you know what? it aint going to be pretty.

    • 2002tony says:

whatshisname, being your a JSerra fan, why are you being so boastful about MV. Not that you cant root for MV or think they will win, but you had much better post earlier in the year when you put together comments on why a team should win or lose.

  • tonyza says:

Ok, let me just say what every old school Angeles League alum is thinking. MV and Olu have been good for a few years. Servite and MD have been dominant ever since the Anaheim hs fell from glory. There is in the fiber of the student who attends both MD and Servite that can only be compared with the military or a fraternity or maybe a QUALITY university. We make sure our offspring attends our alma-mater, so they too can have the same experience. That is why MD and Servite have always been very competitive. We play to make our fellow Friars proud every year. Look at our crouds. All of the negative sayings about Servite being over-rated or about score differentials mean nothing to the Servite Friar. It makes us stronger and brings us closer together. As it seems, Servite is is under-rated every year as if someone at the Register wants Servite to be stronger. It’s working. This is a monumental year for Servite, breaking the MD curse. When I was a Friar there was no such curse but anyhoot, I’m glad it’s over. Servite has not ever lost to Olu.They did have a bad year though. MD too. Servite is just having another regular year being elite. CREDO—”like sharks at a shipwreck attacking our prey leaving fear and havoc to those our way, whack crack smack, there is no turning back once we’ve begun or attack!” Ready for hut drill!!!!!!!

  • bighsfootballfan says:

Fighting Fryer….absurd and un-educated….easy my man Servite is good yes but they barely escaped with a win over a down LB Poly club…they get beat up by Edision, i think were all talking in the moment well at least i am…when i say over-rated i simply mean they arent a team that scares you to death with execution…on the other hand MV is they make all the plays and have a fantastic defense….and are the best team in the county, i know Edision is a close 2nd and Servite is up there but not beatabler in my opinion and they wont win this game if both teams play up to their potential….

    • tonyza says:

One reason for the lack of spectacular scores and plays is that Servite had the toughest schedule of any school in Ca. They have geared themselves in accordance to their opponents. They know its tough to make huge plays with these kinds of opponents. So they stick to what works, bogging down the opposition. They do a lot of quick passes that can’t be stopped by any defender. MV can just hope that Fajardo has a bad night but we all know thats not going to happen. MV will be bogged down too, trust me. Servite is having just another Servite year. Servite has never played against MV because MV was never good(big enough) enough to play them in CIF even though Servite has never topped 1000 in enrollment. My class won CIF and we had 675 students. 130 graduating seniors. If Edison had one less TD in that game and Servite had one more then there would be no more debate. That could have easily happened. They won’t scare you to death but they will suppress.

      • whatshisname says:

you and the guild are really setting yourselves up for a monsterous let down . maybe anahiem pd ought to be put on suicide watch sat morning.

        • tonyza says:

Are there MV fans living in Anaheim? Servite’s atheletes aren’t from Anaheim. They are the top athletes from areas such as Mission Viejo and Norco such as myself.

      • 2002tony says:

tonyza, dont weasel out by saying Servite had the toughest schedule, the fact is the pre season expectation was the schedule was the toughest, but if you had been paying attention, you would have realized it was not the toughest by a long shot. Toughest schedule played this year was by Loyola. They played 5 league Champions and not a team had a losing record.

Servite only beat 4 teams with winning records in their schedule before playoffs, and one of those 4 teams was JSerra. Not so tough a schedule as it turned out.

        • 2002tony says:

tonyza, I didnt mean for the way “weasel out” reads to me now that I see it posted, I apologize if it sounds like a dig, it was not meant to should like that.

    • 2002tony says:

Big, that explanation is a lot better then just saying overrated. Overrated has way to many negative meanings and produces very negative feelings when used.

If you are a long time MV fan, you would know how that word has always been just a negative dig to our program. When many here on this board use it, it is never used to to point out that a team may be ranked or rated to high, it is almost always used as a dig or a put-down to a team or program.

  • UHwarrior says:

I haven’t seen anyone as dominant as MV this year. Servite is good but can they beat a great MV, but I don’t think so. Speed kills and MV has plenty of it on both sides of the ball. Servite will be trying to play catch-up all game.

    MV big over Sevite 42-21.

  • Fighting Fryer says:

Not trying to shove anything down anyone’s throat. Servite has been taking heat all season for other’s opinions regarding strength of schedule and how they have been rated. MV is not going to walk over Servite as their fan’s hope will happen. Servite will win this game.

WHISN maybe you have had your head in hole and not watched a team that has more depth and much better on special teams than MV. Friday will be the deciding day and MV fans will then know that the upset has been placed in the history books. It will take much more than a good defense to beat Servite. As far as a down LB Poly Team fact is Servite played them twice and won both games I’m not sure MV would have had the same outcome…………Good Luck you will need it!!!!!!

    Go Friars!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • whatshisname says:

think you got it backwards pal, mission is the one who took heat all year about sched, not friars. infact all we read was how they had the toughest sched, so dont be a flip floper like obama on the war . like I siad seen both teams twice and purposely suffered through reruns of friar games and I see a big difference. mission has even more defensive speed and tenacity than even los al or edison,so how do you expect thomas to counter that. lets talk matchups not fan bias because Im not a fan of either. you have no tight end, your qb runs more than he throws and even when he does he doesent air it out because thats not in the scheme of things. and do you really think nichols will not take apounding. looks like the friar faithful are the ones that need to collectively pull their heads out of what did you say ? hole, well how bout arses.

      • tonyza says:

Has MV played against a good team this year? Let Servite have that schedule and of course the outcomes will be lopsided just the same. Servite does have the experience, speed and tenacity to beat another good team and then maybe we’ll get another shot at our new nemisis —- Edison. Enjoy your little time in the sun MV. Your new perspective is coming Friday night.

        • whatshisname says:

you see you cant leave the sched alone can you. trinity was cupcake this year as shown in first round.and its nice to know about where they live so now you have no credibilty about oc football since your no different than our freinds south osan diego who visit periodically

        • 2002tony says:

tonyza, except for Edison, just who did Servite play that could not be evaluated as the same strength of a team on MV schedule. I know the schedule had the expectation before the season began of being the strongest but as it turned out, it wasn’t.

  • tonyza says:

How does swarming translate into slow. The words used by the writers who saw them play this year was “swarming” and “hard hitting”. I don’t remember the word slow ever coming up. Do people really think that MV will humiliate Servite? This ain’t our first rodeo….

    • whatshisname says:

hey dude, Im just staying the course and having fun with it. You see Im actually doing you a favor since, if you check previous blogs, I allways pick against the friars and it must be good luck since so far Ive been wrong, so you could say in an ironic way ,Im on yourside because I know the la habra faithful would love nothing more than to spend all day at the big A watching their beloved clan win 3 in a row and their favorite son win his ring all on the same day.I can guarantee C I F will be making lots of money from the city of la habra on dec 12th.

    • 2002tony says:

I know there are some fans who may be a little to boastful tony, but anyone who knows anything about football at this level would never think that Servite will be humiliated.

The fact is no one really knows how good or not MV is, (forget the schedule) no team that is or was in the playoffs, has been able to stop the MV offense from putting at least 40 points on the board. Also, there is no team that has kept the MV starting D in the game past the 3rd quarter.

Most non MV fans thought that ND was going to really show MV a thing or two about football last week. ND ave 33 points a game and over 400 yards, they fell just like the rest of the teams MV has faced. SO now the same non MV fans are saying the same thing, MV will get their first big test, well, we have been tested a few times, and still have had the same results.

  • LM FAN 2 says:

I think MV is going to win handily. There defense is too good for Servite. But games are won and lost on the field so we shall see.

  • UHwarrior says:

I haven’t seen anyone in the OC as dominant as MV. Servite had a difficult schedule, yes, they showed heart, and determination by winning close games, and coming from behind, all character building elements. If Servite can keep it close they know how to win under diverse conditions. MV hasn’t even been challenged to be honest. With that being said, I still think MV has been the best team in the OC all year. Servite will struggle just to keep it close.

  • Fighting Fryer says:

I guess you will just have to watch and struggle through another Servite win. As far as Fajardo and Nichols their stats speak for themselves. No TE and Fajardo running more than throwing has put us in the win column week after week so whats the problem. As far as airing it out you must have missed them or watched the wrong films because Fajardo can air it out with the best of them. Sounds like you may be a bit tenative with your MV Group. Play-Offs are a brand new season so all the crap about MV and Servite’s strength of schedule means nothing Friday is a new day for both teams.

I am a fan and proud of it and maybe you didn’t learn much from all of the Friar reruns because if you were really watching you would have noticed that the “BEST OVERALL Football Program is the Servite Friar’s who say bring it on and not afraid of playing anyone. Their acomplishments this season speak for themselves. MV will be a Great Game but MV is just not good enough for to come out on top.

    Creedo Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • whatshisname says:

creedo must be a coded word for cry cry babies. why was fryer whining about poly fans dissing the hut drill who cares, are we on cia watch if we disrespect servite traditions, sounds like the skulls at that school.

    • 2002tony says:

Fighting Fryer, good post, a little miss directed in my (MV) view, but what you said about the schedule strength is right on, it does not mean anything come Friday about 7:30.

It will be a great game and all the Servite traditions are great as well. Good luck to both our teams and may they play injury free.

  • Observer says:

So what happened to Servite against Edison when they were only able to put 9 points on the board? MV’s defennse is better than Edison’s. It is going to require more than 9 points to beat MV

  • tonza….nobody that i know or have written comments think less of the academic achievments of the PAYING customers at Servite …..but all the money in the Mint isnt gonna buy a victory here…Misson Viejo is top notch public school with the best team….that is how it goes sometimes……..so here it is MV handles the paying customers this round….all Hail to Public Schools!!!!!!

  • The Guild says:

Gather round all you MV fans and let Papa Guild tell you a story. You see, I’m an old fart and this tale takes us back to 1964. It seems that the greatest defense in all of the land was that of the MD Monarchs, who had compiled an unbelievable eight shutouts of their eight opponents! They had one team left to complete the greatest performance of any hs football team of the era, Servite.
Well, all the naysayers lined up to put their spin on how the team from LaPalma Ave shouldn’t even show up. A school of 300 should not even be in the same league.
I attended Servite for the same reasons that so many parents send their pride and joys today, excellent education and the opportunity to compete on the athletic field with the beSt in SoCAL. The attitude of lots of folks back then and today was that Catholic schools were not of the same ilk and we were ridiculed and despised, much like today. It fueled PRIDE,DISCIPLINE, and COURAGE…the tools that enabled us Friars to get the job done both in the classroom and the football field. The life lessons learned by Friar footballers form memories and shared experiences with the comaraderie that public schoolers seldom get the opportunity of living. Too bad.
But I digress. Back to the story. The Friars did board the bus to the field of play and strapped on the Black Helmet and played the game. When the dust settled, the Monarchs stood tall and left the battle with MD pride…after viewing Servite perform their famous Hut Drill with due precision and SERVITE PRIDE, as the newly crowned Angelus League Champs. Final score Servite 13 MD 0 !!
What does this tale have to do with the current game to come? Well all of you MV fans gloat now, cause beware of the history and know that the Friar team you will face has the same qualities of that 1964 team and have the will and tools to get the job done! Stand tall when it’s over and applaud both teams as I will and know that the Servite Friars will perform the tradional Hut Drill as victors and the real “Best” Team in all of the land!
    CREDO

    • 2002tony says:

Great story guild. I have a question, will Servite still perform the Hut Drill after losing to MV this Friday? wink. Will you be making it up to the game or watching on TV?

      • The Guild says:

Look for the old guy being wheeled in Tiger with the “Old Grumpy” on his Friar letterman’s jacket. I’m driving up from San Diego and sopping in MV to take a leak on their field for “bhsfbf” along with eight other former Friars. And despite some rumors that I live in the past, I still am asked for advice from several different PW coaches! Oh, and the Gorilla will be there getting in my ear about the grandiose effects of the Friars 10-1 defense coming this Fri nite!
Stop with the winks…you’re givin me a bad rep!

  • on looker! says:

i do see this coming to be a close game. MV as not been tested with a team of servites strength all year. the reason people think MV is so good is because of the score. well to be completely honest i think they are a good team, but people over rate them. they’re scores are so high because the keep they’re starters in until its the fourth quarter and they are up by 50. that shows nothing when they are playing helpless teams. thats why i see this being a really close game. and maybe i mean just maybe we will see servite come through with a win over MV!

    • 2002tony says:

You really have no idea what your talking about. You dont come to the games and as Steve Fryer has said many times in posting here, MV pulls their starters as much or more than any other team. Most of those points where scored long before the 4th quarter. there are only 2 games out of 12 that MV had their starting Offense in the game going into the 4th quarter.

Also the main reason why people think MV will win is because they will outscore Servite, Not because of the (in your words) 50 points they will have, it is because Servite could still has zero on the score board when the starting Defense comes off the field. I a not saying Servite will have a zero, but I am saying that Servite will not score near as often as MV will. Defense is why MV will win the game.

  • Guild nobody cares……..the Knute Rockne era is long gone…..64 was a good year i guess but that was45 years ago….LOL….cmon man…on the real its a nice story and im sure you still get chills so thats cool but this Mission Viejo team is the real deal….Servite just doesnt have enough to beat em….

  • DSTroy77 says:

All I can say is….this is going to be GREAT!

    Go Diablos!

  • DSTroy77 says:

    ….And remember Kids. SPEED KILLS!

This has been a Public Service Announcement brought to you by the MV Diablos.

  • UHwarrior says:

BIGHS and Fighting Fryer, you guys had some great funny takes, luv it. LOL!

  • football fan says:

I has a football fan will see a good game by two outstanding teams this Friday. There is alot of igornance going on here in this blog. I have seen both teams play and it will be close. One thing Servite does is play as a TEAM! It’s not all about ONE individual. They do not leave their starters in when they are beating a team 31-0. Mission Viejo does. The many times I watch Servite play, they could of ran up the score 70-15 but they don’t. I have seen MV run up the score….perhaps for practice purposes….who knows. There are alot teams that will run up a score just because they can. What message is that sending! Hum….. Mission Viejo is a very good team but they will have to work at it Friday. This will not be an easy win for either team.
Also, when bloggers were saying there is no one from Anahiem playing for Servite. Wow…it’s a private school! How many OC school teams recruit players out of their district? OOPs, did I say something wrong! Let me see…..”Can I get my best friend/grandma/cousin/collegue, etc. to put me on his/her home address”!!!!!! We all know what goes on at the High School Football level.Anyone with a brain can’t say it doesn’t happen.

Both these teams have different qualities of playing the game. They both have very good defense and offensive players. Good luck and may the best team win Friday!

    • The Guild says:

Well said FBF! I could regale all with my experiences as a coach (hsfblvr, MV, et.al) in three states and thru three decades, but the shallow fans of MV wouldn’t give a rat’s a**!
MV fans talk about point difference (Tiger, you pointless imbecil!) and recruiting and coaching superiority and lots of non meaning stats.
The difference will be heart. Contnue to deny the reality of PRIDE,DISCIPLINE and COURAGE. The difference will be determined by onfield leadership and mistakes.
You SoCounty homers will see the difference this Friday nite. Only one point difference is needed Tiger.
      CREDO

  • HSfball lover says:

The Guild get with the current year and stop dreaming of the past 1964. I could drool all day over 04 MV team that had every single starter get scholarships. GO DIABLOS its gunna be a tuff game!

    • tonyza says:

Servite’s average 04 team would have spanked that 04 MV team. Don’t you see that you must look to the past very carefully. What division was MV? MV couldn’t compete on Servite’s level in 04. Apples and
oranges. There is a lot of football tradition here in oc, welcome to the bigs MV, it took long enough. It’s kinda like Olu from the 1990s, you both act like you’ve been good for a while, you even talk big like Olu did. MV finally has a chance to prove themselves in div. Div.IA. The stage is set. No pressure.

      • mv on top says:

Are you kidding me? Did you not even look at how mission played in 04? Los Al, Mater Dei, Long Beach Poly, De La Salle!!!!! Servite only won two games in 04. Yeah look at the past very carefully tonyza.

      • 2002tony says:

That is an ignorant post tonyza,

        MV played,
Los Alamitos score 55-21 this was Los Al only loss until the Div 1 CIF Championship game against LB Poly. They were the Sunset League Champions.

Mater Dei Score 14-7 Mater Dei was the Serra League Co Champions and beat Servite that year 30-0

LB Poly Score 44-14 This would be Poly’s only loss as they won the Div 1 CIF Championship.

De La Salle Score 17-14 DLS went on to be the Northern CIF Champion

MV from this point on played 9 Div II teams and averaged 50.1 point and their starting defense gave up only 3 TD, one to Hart in the qtr finals, one to Upland in the simi, and one to Valencia in the finals. They finished ranked #1 or # 2 in the USA depending on who’s poll you looked at.

        • mv on top says:

thank you. idk why tonyza posted that ridiculous statement.

        • tonyza says:

Many of Servite’s best athletes refused to play for coach Toner and he was eventually relieved of his coaching job. whew….i hate politics at the hs level… MV has finally made it to IA is all i’m saying. comparisons should start now since MV competes at the same level now. Upland? Valencia? Hart? Come on now. This isn’t Damien. Sanchez is a phenom, granted. How did that young 04 Servite team do in 05?

        • 2002tony says:

tonyza, again just for your info, I could have left off upland, but the reason Hart and Valencia are worthy to note ,
Hart beat the Loyola, the co champion from the Serra league,
Valencia beat Bishop Amat, (a Serra league playoff team) 45-7, and they beat St John Bosco ( another Serra playoff team) 37-6.
So the Div II teams were not so bad playing against the Div 1 teams who you made the comment that the could not compete against. So when you say …come on….. Just know those teams all would have killed Servite.

And that was your point, that MV could not stand up to the teams of the past, and your welcome to the bigs. You said that to be a put down to the MV team and fans, and shows your unfounded bias statements, but if you really look at it as I have pointed out, Servite has not done as well.

      • 2002tony says:

Also tonyza, MV from 2000 to 2005 coulnd cm
MV vs Sunset League and MD (same team that beat Servie each year)
2000 MV 1 win 1 loss to Sunset
2001 MV 2 wins over Sunset and a 28-14 win over MD (Servite loses)
2002 MV 2 wins over Sunset and a 21-19 win over MD (Servite loses)
2003 MV 2 wins over Sunset and a 22-11 win over MD (Servite loses)
        Also win over LB Poly
2004 MV 2 wins over Sunset and a 14-7 win over MD (Servite loses)
Also 41-14 win over CIF Champ LB Poly
2005 MV 1-0 over Sunset and 48-7 over MD (Servite loses)
        Also MV vs Moore 1 – 0

MD is a Div I playoff team each of those years, and MV is a Div II team.
At this point in time, record of last 6 years of MV (Div II vs Sunset, Moore, and Serra (Div I) is 16 wins to 1 loss.

2006 South Coast League is added to Div 1 or newly named Pac-5
2006 MV beat Los Al in 1st round playoffs 44-7 loses to RSM in Playoffs 24-25.
MV loses to MD 14 17 and Servite loses 22-28, Servite also loses in 2nd round
2007 MV loses to Olu in playoffs. 7-28
2008 MV vs Loyola in playoffs 37-7 loses to Lakewood in 2nd round, Servite lost to Lakewood in the 1st round.

So at this point tonyza – one way to look at this, the record for playing common opponents between MV and Servite, Servite is way behind. To think that MV has not proven themselves as a Div 1 team, They have a better record then Servite since 2000. Like you said, no pressure on MV, we have been beating the teams that have beaten you for years.

        • mv on top says:

tonyza please save us all from writers cramp and stop posting. Servite is a Div. 2 school. Who are you talking about when you say welcome to the bigs? You cant be talking about servite can you? A team that took decades to finally beat a mater dei team mission has beaten over the years? Get your facts straight. Mission has played the best and beaten the best. How long has servite been around? How long has Mission been around? Now who has been the more dominant program over the past decades? nuff said

        • tonyza says:

MV has never played against Servite for the same reason as El Toro. Not competitive enough for a sustained amount of time. Do have any idea what of what OC fb was like in the 50′s,60′s,70′s,80′s and 90′s. Servite came about in the early 60′s and ever since then, we have won 1/5 of the CIF titles. That’s 2 every decade and lots of semi’s and runner ups too. At the TOP level of competition……..

        • The Guild says:

2009 MV 18 Servite 19 Semi Final loss and out of playoffs.

  • bob says:

anyone know all south coast league o-lineman?

  • diabloswin says:

    Whether it’s recruiting or just kids wanting to play for a strong program, it has benefitted the private schools for decades and continues to do so. Ah, but every now and then the tables are turned… Servite has never seen a public school like this, where kids transfer IN after bolting The Church League. Mark Sanchez from RSM back in the day… Xavier Edwards from OLu this year… time for the Friars to get a taste of their own recruiting medicine? :-}

Props to Fajardo, he is truly a great player. But I’ve seen both teams- and the Friar’s best RB, wideouts and DBs would be no better than third string at MV. All hype aside, the most salient comments here have been focused on defense. Defense is what wins championships when the games get this tough.

    Mission 28-10. Agree with me now, it will save time later. -}

    Last add- it is AMAZING how strong fan support is for both MV and Servite! I mean, where is the discussion of Edison or Lakewood on this thread?? Let’s make a deal; whoever doesn’t win supports the other on 12/12. I will welcome the support of all humbled Friar fans after Friday night, and offer the same if my boys should stumble… um, I mean if we get cheated by the refs! ;-}

Long Beach Poly is just the same as MV in that respect. The players from Long Beach Poly aren’t all locals.

      • whatshisname says:

many players refused to play for coach tonr? there goes every thing the guild has been preaching about dicipline quiet confidence and leadership. thanks for the truth tonyza

        • The Guild says:

You wouldn’t know the truth if it was tatooed on your butt “whatchama”!
I coached with Larry Toner when we were frosh coaches and will say that he is one fine gentleman that was well intended.
That being said, you will witness the quiet confidence and discipline of a great hs fb team Fri nite….I’m not talking MV (though they are very, very good) but the boys on La Palma Ave will win, though w/o your respect cause class does show.

Well sorry Diabloswin fan, but your ignorance is getting the best of you. Regardless of private or public school, one doesn’t benefit over the other. Recruiting has being going on for years on both sides depending on the school. Unless you have on an average of 10,000 you do not get into a private school these days. Also, maybe if your talking about Mater Dei…yes they recruit! Servite doesn’t recruit as you would think. You must have the grades to go to Servite, regardless on how good of a player you are. Got it! Sports isn’t the priority at Servite! Talk to any parent or coach. The school teaches you much more than that. That’s where the ignorance come into play. When one doesn’t know something they make something up……HUM… For alot of kids around the OC sports is it, because perhaps they have nothing else to offer a good university(grades might help)!
Obviously you haven’t seen a Servite Football game live, since you are making such ridulous comments. I have seen several MV games.
Again these two teams are superior with different qualities than the other. It will be a battle on Friday and the game isn’t going to come easy to either team………the bloggers have to think seriously….MV willn’t be scoring high and either will Servite. It’s going to come down to good coaching and focus! I am looking forward to a good game. I wish both teams the best!

    • The Guild says:

I personally will welcome you and all MV fans to sit in my section “devil’s try hard” and the ref’s tried hard to deny the Friars, but to no avail. There should be a rule denying a person collecting ss to be an CIF official. That umpire was goofy after losing his flask!

  • Observer says:

MV gas too much speed on D for Servite. And the statements about MV playing a weak scheule in 04 are a joke. I don’t care who refused to play for Servites coach in 04, MV would have beat Servite by at least 21 points that year, probably more. But the past doesn’t matter. It will all be settled shortly then MV can move on to the finals and Servite can feel good about having a great season that ended a little earlier than they had hoped.

  • ru real says:

by reading any of the MV hype I would think you have the best team in football history. shoot you guys probably get a bid for the rose bowl this year. congrats!!

  • A Mom says:

ru real…love your comment! so funny! I love the MV hype and I love the fact the Servite is going in as the underdogs…what many don’t know is that in almost every game Servite’s 2nd &s3rd string players went in, the score was never ran up, even when it could’ve been. There is depth on this team and a pride that will shine on Friday night. My money is with them, but win or lose, they are by far the BEST team!

mission is the real deal!!! best defense i have seen all year they have some serious hitters. servite is a good team , but so was norte dame. when you watch college ball what do you see on the feild?? SPEED and mission has plenty of it on both sides of the ball. servite will hve their hands full with the diablos WILDCAT one of the best in high school football. these kids are playing as a group and have several D1 prospects. diablos 28- servite 14

  • ROMELO says:

THE ONE TWO PUNCH OF EDWARDS AND MARSHALL WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE. THEN TRE MADDEN ” ITS IN THE GAME”

  • Observer says:

I don’t have a stake in either school just a huge fan of football. But I have seen both teams and I truly believe MV has too much speed on defense. Servite is a determined, tough team but they just don’t have enough to get over the hump against the MV defense. We will know shortly, the time is near. Good luck to both teams.
