football_blog6This week’s top football matchups:

Edison (12-0) vs. Lakewood (11-1)
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Orange Coast College

Outlook: In this one, you have the mighty Chargers on one side of the field. They are led by quarterback Matt Viles (182 of 299, 2,578 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions) and his band of receivers, and Jordan Zumwalt and the crew on defense.

Edison defeated Long Beach Millikan (59-14) and Dana Hills (46-16) to advance to the semifinals.

On the other side of the field, there is Lakewood, the Moore League champs, led by USC-bound quarterback Jesse Scroggins.

The Lancers have defeated Newport Harbor (41-17) and Bishop Amat of La Puente (34-17).

Scroggins has completed 146 of 230 passes (63.5 percent) for 2,170 yards, 33 touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Lancers haven’t lost since opening night.

The trio of Terrance Woods (612 yards), Rashad Wadood (604) and Alley Long (578) lead the ground game.

Both teams feature stingy defenses. Edison is allowing just 9.75 points a game, while opponents are scoring 9.25 points a night.

Can the Chargers slow Scroggins? Will the Lancers be able to stop Viles and Co.?

The Lancers have a quality offense with Scroggins and their running game 33passing td’s with Scroggins and 12 rushing with Wood’s and their defense shutting teams down but they aren’t playing teams with with quality wins only winning 5 games with teams that have winning records 53-23 record the teams that have winning record and total is 66-71. They have some weapons with Scroggins and Woods, Wadood and Long.

The Chargers have the same offense maybe as explosive as the Lancers. Viles leading the team down the field in his arm with 24passing touchdowns and with Houston and Orphey pounding in with 8 and 7 rushing for them. But Edison’s strength is in their defense and Zumwalt holding the load.

Outcome the Chargers over the Lancers because Edison has so many options with their receivers Trojan, Leener, and Rivera all of the catching over 7 touchdown passes and Houston and Orphey running silently but deadly into defense’s backfield and Their defense shutting teams down I don’t think Lakewood can rely on Scroggins and just their running game getting by Edison.

From the start of these playoffs ive thought that this Lakewood club was one to watch out for….they havent proven me wrong, they are for real,in all facets of the game great talent, speed, dont shoot themselves with turnovers and just play solid football every time they step out on the field,….now they run into the top-rated Chargers of Edision a worthy team and have taken on every team in the OC that has been thrown to them and have found ways to win even on off nights….very impressive..so what is gonna happen here??? my gut says Edision but i think the time has run out on them and Lakewood continues it solid play and escapes with a 24-21 victory, my hope is Edision gets this one but believe me i seen this Lakewood team play, just once but very very impressive and soon all Edision fans may tend to agree….good luck and go Chargers!!

  • Paul says:

Edison wins by 10 or 14 points, then on December 12th, will play the REAL best team in Orange County: The Mission Viejo Diablos!!!

  • NON IGNORANT says:

Yo< I saw Edison play my Rams for the first time 2 weeks ago and ill tell you, Edison used their JV in the third quarter. I know Lakewood blew us out but they left their starters in the whole time. I understand why Edison is No,1, they have so many weapons and their defense is good. they have a big athletic line that can pound the ball on the ground. I honestly dont think it will be close although Lakewood has had a breakout season. Edison 41 Lakewood 21.

  • bighsfootballfan says:

i get your point NON-IGNORANT but this year Edision has had at least 3 games they struggled and had to find a way to win which is very admirable…..so my thoughts are if they come out and start slow and kinda will themselves to that point of struggle against a really good club like Lakewood well there toast….Lakewood plays solid week after week and really hasnt turned the ball over which is gonna be a big point in who wins this game,Edision throws like crazy so hopefuuly the dont get hit with a couple pick 6′s….if Edision plays good and Lakewood plays good……dude there dead even…..

  • HB Fan says:

    bighsfootballfan,

They’re dead even? You know something that EVERY rating site doesn’t? I agree this will be a great game & both teams are class acts but feel it’s Lakewood that has to play up to Edison not the other way around, if they both play ‘good’ games, Edison wins.

Congrats to both programs for terrific years regardless of the outcome.

  • Only thing i know is that Lakewood is solid….real solid as is Edision, in my book MV is tops and the Chargers and Lakewood are almost identical, and i do hope the OC team comes out and knocks heads as they are very capable of doing…but they also have shown they struggle at times…..their undefeated may be ripe for the picking so in essence no i dont know any more than my opinion and that is im going with a club that has sat quietly basically and run through a couple of good football teams in thes playoffs and shown me enough to pick em….thats all no more no less….and i am pulling for Edision…

  • HB Fan says:

We’ll leave it to the boys & coaches to decide.

  • UHwarrior says:

Lakewood is a good team and played a difficult schedule. But Edison is a great team and played a much tougher schedule. Sure Edison struggled during the year, but look who they struggled with. Los Al, and Mater Dei, both are really good programs, and Edison still came out on top. Both teams have a pretty good offenses, so again it comes down to defense.

Edison I think has the better defense. Edison over Lakewood 21-14.

  • johnconner says:

No one probably cares like the Mission Viejo fans, but Lakewood hasn’t played great, decent teams besides crenshaw and only lost by one point. When they played Bishop Amat 34-17 doesn’t sound that impressive i mean a win is a win but Edison’s defense is to good and again i don’t think Lakewood can just depend on Scroggins and their running game

  • Observer says:

I think this game is a toss up. Both very good, well rounded teams.

  • brownalum says:

Dana Hills beat Newport Harbor by a wider margin than Lakewood did and Edison crushed Dana twice. Don’t know how much you can look into that but Dana’s defense played with Newport’s offense, not sure how Newport scored that much on Lakewood.

  • facts says:

    Keep in mind:
    Who overcomes starter injuries.
Who will avoid the turnovers. Who will capitalize on turnovers.

    defense wins championships

  • SERVITE ROX says:

OK servite rules and there going to own both of them
