PAC-5 DIVISION
Friday’s second-round game
SERVITE (10-1) VS. LONG BEACH POLY (6-5)
Where, when: Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.
Outlook: These teams met in Week 0, on Sept. 3, and Servite won, 30-7. The Friars had a 16-0 lead, and cruised behind a great defensive effort. Long Beach Poly’s quarterback for that game was junior Dylan Legarde, who weeks later transferred to Los Alamitos. Third-seeded Servite beat San Clemente, 38-10, in the first round last week at Cerritos College. Friars quarterback Cody Fajardo was a dual threat again, rushing for 102 yards and two touchdowns, and completing 11 of 13 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. Chris Nicholls rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns and had four receptions for 37 yards. Servite still will be without two-way lineman Kirifi Taula, who is recovering from a broken arm, and tight end/defensive end Troy Niklas, whose concussion suffered in a Trinity League game against Santa Margarita four weeks ago was his third over a 13-month period. Taula might be able to play next week if Servite advances to the semifinals, but Niklas’ season is over, Servite coach Troy Thomas said. Poly, the defending division champion, beat Los Alamitos last week, 24-7. It was Los Al’s home game, but Veterans Stadium also is Poly’s home field. Kaelin Clay rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and the Jackrabbits blocked two punts, one for a safety and the other recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. Poly only threw 11 times (senior Chris Leachman is the quarterback now), completing three, against Los Alamitos, but the Jackrabbits’ passing game will be a point of emphasis for Servite. “We can’t give up any big passing plays,” Thomas said. “They are going to get their yards running the ball, we know that. And we have to play as a team, which has been our strength all year.” The winner plays the Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks-Mission Viejo winner in the semifinals Dec. 4.

long beach poly 21 servite 17 this is a new Poly team from the week one team. Servite better be ready for a different team that is ready for redempetion
does any1 know of all south coast league teams?
No worries for Servite. Besides being a superior team in all facets, they have added incentive in facing Poly’s new QB…he is a former backup to Fajardo!
Servite by two scores.
Ya we all noticed, since they lost 4 other games since Servite… Your comment might have some validity if Poly had won the last 8 or 9 games.

Servite- Please take out Poly. The glory days are over for LB Poly.
Thanks for the memories Poly. See ya…

are you for real? it was closer at start of season and poly has gotten better, plus friars lose stud te and de all in one. fajardo is good but cant carry team by himself for ever. get a clue
no c.i.f title for poly this year and they choked in state last year its over.servite by a landslide
Poly ain’t just “defending champion.” They are TWO-TIME defending champion. Probably won’t beat Servite, but it should be closer than the first meeting.
One this Poly has Over Servite is history. Let me see …oh yea 18 CIF top division championships and the past two years as PAC 5 champs. Let me think of all titles that Servite has…… I better call the smithsonian. Poly will win and be back better than ever next year.
I have a feeling Servite’s injuries with Niklas and Taula will hurt them a lot, “them”, I’m referring to as Servite.
Well Servite beat Poly 21-18 in a nail biter. Close game. For all who thought Servite was going to run away with the game, Poly has gotten better since the beginning of the season where most of their starters were playing their first varsity game. That along with the injuries to Servite starters should have been enough to make it a close game. Good game by both teams, perhaps Servite will win the championship this year but it’ll be a tough road with Mission Viejo and Lakewood (my prediction) in their way.
