The Oilers qualified for the state playoffs by upsetting the No. 2 and 3 seeds in the CIF-SS Division I-A playoffs and reaching the finals.
Huntington Beach showed its magic hasn't run out, stunning No. 2 La Costa Canyon in five games, 18-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-20, 17-15, in the first round of the Division I CIF State girls volleyball championships Tuesday night at La Costa Canyon. LCC was the defending state champion.
The Oilers will now face No. 3 Newport Harbor on Saturday night.
"We've been playing with nothing to lose," Oilers coach Craig Pazanti said. "We've been the underdogs the last four matches. Tonight we showed our resiliency. It was nice to see."
Huntington Beach was swept by Dos Pueblos in Saturday's sectional final. It took an 8-2 lead in the first game against La Costa, only to be outscored 23-10 the rest of the way.
"You could see the look on their faces like here we go again," Pazanti said. "They were either going to quit or battle. I have a huge amount of respect for how they were able to battle back."
