football_blog6The best football games on this week’s schedule:

Long Beach Poly (6-5) vs. Servite (10-1)
Friday, 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium

Outlook: How much has Long Beach Poly improved since the first meeting?

The teams met in Week 0 with the Friars winning 30-7. Since then, Servite has only lost once.

The Friars’ offense, led by quarterback Cody Fajardo has put up amazing numbers since the Edison loss. Fajardo has completed 128 of 174 passes (73.6 percent) for 15 touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also rushed for 763 yards.

Chris Nicholls has 675 receiving yards and 414 rushing yards. He has scored 22 total touchdowns.

Those two players left their mark on the first game. Nicholls and Fajardo both accounted for two touchdowns.

Last week against San Clemente, the Servite offense rushed for 341 yards, Fajardo completed 11 of 13 passes and the unit didn’t commit any turnovers in a 38-10 victory.

Can Servite’s offense be slowed?

The Jackrabbits started the season 1-3 and were 2-5 after losing to Long Beach Millikan, Oct. 23. Since then, Long Beach Poly is on a four-game winning streak.

During this stretch, the Jackrabbits are only allowing 10 points a game.

The Jackrabbits opened the playoffs with a 24-7 victory over Los Alamitos. Kaelin Clay rushed for 152 yards of the team’s 250 yards.

The Poly defense scored a pair of safeties and blocked two punts, recovering one for a touchdown.

Can the Poly defense shut down the Servite offense? Or will Fajardo and Company be too much to handle?

Seems like Servite’s a bit stronger than Poly. I admire and like Poly’s program a lot; but I’m going with Servite as the better team this year. But don’t be surprised if Poly returns the favor this time around.

  • dee ray says:

    servite by 40 points

  • UHWarrior says:

Poly’s got a great program, and showed a lot of heart, by manhandling a very good Los Al team. Los Al had more talent, Poly had more heart (and better coaching), Poly came up big by putting up 24 points against one of the best defenses in the OC last Friday. But, Los Al is not Servite. Servite ends Poly’s winning streak. Servite is the better team and will not be out coached, However, Poly’s offense will be a challenge to stop. Servite win’s this one in a shoot out 35-28.

  • THansen says:

POLY had a purpose when they played Los Al. They wanted to beat up on the Los Al QB, who had been the starter at Poly for the first 3 games of the season, They were motivated.
The purpose against Servite is to avenge an early season loss. I think Poly was satisified to end the season beating Los Al. They may have an emotional let down this week.
I think Servite may be too much for Poly. Fajardo (QB, Servite) runs well and is an effective passer. The Defense is playing well, minus 2 of their best Defensive linemen.
    I am changing my prediction
    Servite by 10.

  • 2e says:

rematch minus there best d linemen, hmmm, nice, idont a have a prediction i do know that poly has three major contributers to the d, in Fasavalu, Salamo, and Rowe, due to Polys “senior s should be starting attitude” these three had to sit and wait for there chance to see the field and when there chance came…. now they are the Linebacking crew, there is no qb by committee Leachman is it win or lose, but watch out for that wildcat it might show up, Clay (UCLA i hope) is awesome, and cory westbrook has jus been resting for another shot at Servite( by the way Servites discipline alone wins games its great, that coach is nice)…..Polys D line anchored by Te’o and Waller have been ballin out o control……If, If ,and i say if Poly uses there TE and FB they should be alright, Go Poly and Servite make it a great one to remember.

  • bob says:

can’t beat a team twice…..thats all i have to say

  • Steve Fryer says:

Bob — I have a young man, a college offensive lineman, home for Thanksgiving and, as a member of the 2006 Servite team that lost to Edison in nonleague and in the playoffs, he wishes you were correct.

  • seathound says:

UHWarrior – Poly has terrible coaching. Their staff relys on their athletes to get them out of most jams. I was at the 1st game of the season where Servite ran the same base defense 15 times in a row and Poly did nothing to change it up. Servite kept throwing the short pass, yet Poly’s DB’s still played 10 yards off the ball. Their coaching staff made 0 adjustements the entire game.

If Poly hopes to have a chance, they better do something differently, and their coaches better have a better game plan. I don’t see anything changing. Servite 30 – Poly 7.(Part 2)

  • ServiteAlum says:

Coach Thomas has his team prepared for a deep run into the playoffs. Servite is a very disciplinded and focussed team. Poly has talent and great coaching but they have been shuffling players all season. Servite has consistency. The MEN OF SERVITE will get it done. Servite in a battle: Servite: 38 Poly: 31

  • UHwarrior says:

Seathound- Poly had better coaching against Los Al. They made sure their team was better prepared and ready to play. Los Al with their talent should have won this one. No excuse for Los Al to get bounced in the first round, AGAIN! But they were outcoached.

Also, I kinda agree with Bob, it’s extremely difficult to beat the same team twice in the same year. But Servite should win the battle of these juggernaut programs.

  • Lhhman says:

Servite will be missing 3 of their superstars – The ineligible, LB apparently will not play and I thought Kirfi would not be back until next week – that is a lot to lose. But I will cheer for Servite……
