Football: Calhoun’s Final Thoughts on Round 1

November 21st, 2009, 12:05 pm · · posted by

football_blog6I struggled all week trying to pick a winner between Pacifica and Fullerton for our pick’em competition at OCVarsity.com. I debated all week, before I finally settled on Fullerton.  …. FAIL.

Props to Pacifica.

Welcome to another edition of my final thoughts of the week.

Bruce Rollinson is one of a kind: Did anybody catch Rollinson’s halftime interview during the MD-Bishop Amat game? It was classic Rollinson. If you ever have a chance to interview Rollinson, please do it. I’m not sure if you will ever have that opportunity, but do it anyway.

Speaking of the Monarchs: What a season. Beware of them next year.

Viles vs. Fajardo: Every year, there is always one position that creates havoc during our All-County meeting. One year it was what to do with Rashard Matthews (Saddleback). Should he go on defense or offense? Last year, it was Allan Bridgford vs. Robbie Picazo. We voted and I think the vote was 4-3. This year, I think we’re headed for a Matt Viles v. Cody Fajardo argument. How can you separate the two? Sounds like a fight is on the horizon in the OCVarsity War Room.

Is the second time the charm? Dana Hills and Long Beach Poly certainly hope so. Both of those teams get a second chance against opponents they lost to early this season. Dana Hills lost to Edison and Long Beach Poly lost to Servite.

Checking in on Servite: Complete performance against San Clemente.

Bishop Amat has a true homefield advantage: I wouldn’t want to go play at Bishop Amat. I wasn’t there, but if it is anything as it seemed on TV, then that is a crazy place.

Mission Viejo wins, before the second round begins: Thanks to the coin flip, the Diablos will host the Notre Dame. That’s a long trip that Diablos don’t have to make.

Thank goodness for Keith Lawson: The senior running back rushed for 282 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead Beckman to a 35-28 first round victory over Laguna Beach. Monday should be “Keith Lawson Day” on the Beckman campus.

Southwest Division’s 10-1 teams: La Habra, Cypress, Trabuco Hills and Tustin are all 10-1. They’re all one victory away from the semifinals. Will all four get there?

The O.C. team of the first round: Goes out to Whittier Christian. The Heralds defeated fourth-seed Arroyo, 27-24 to advance to the second round.

See you next week, somewhere in the county.

Servite was greatly benefited by a referee crew that was either incompetent or quite simply biased. Would not say that if I had not seen the pass that bounced off the ground 2 years ago to salvage a tie with San Clemente that was ruled a touchdown(it was even televised!!).

Between hits after the whistle was blown and blatant tackling of receivers before the ball was even in there hands, Servite is overrated.

If it is not taken down by Poly, Mission will blow them out unless of course the same referees are present( seriously in need of confession or training).

      Well,

Whoever you are,one thing is for sure. You’re NOT a Servite grad, or you would know how to spell and punctuate.

I don’t think a few bad calls (I didn’t see any) caused a 28 point gap; but maybe I’m missing something. Let’s see, the only SC TD was scored on the Servite second team defensive squad. Hmmm?
      Get over it

cut the B.S. on the “grammar” talk

Most people on blogs write fast, cut corners and don’t edit or spellcheck their comments. This has nothing to do with whether or not they can write a grammatically correct sentence or doctorate thesis. It has to do with getting a point across as quickly as possible.

    • Ryan says:

Horrible review. There were some big hits in the game, and I wouldn’t want to be a SC receiver, but saying they were late or after the whistle IS A LIE. It wasn’t even close– so you can’t be mistaken. Clearly you’re making it up.

Kudos to San Clemente’s season. They played all 4 quarters of the game on Friday and should look forward to next season.

  • MustangRanch says:

Thank God San Clemente is out. They have the worst sportsmanship I have ever seen. They deserve to lose. Hats off to Servite for the spanking.

  • thwatcher says:

No side note about TH? They were the only team which recorded a shutout. That’s OK you sit on your thrones while us lower than thou gnaw on your legs.

  • mike says:

does anyone know where you can find the all league football teams??

  • ENCORE says:

I’m in my office looking at my awards and would have to say that my All GardenGrove League voted by those Great Coaches of the Era is very special to me. But the 1st Team AllCounty certificate is also nice. The All CIF Southern Section Award I won is great to. My wife says I live in the past, I just remember those days and cherrish them so. God luck to all of this years players. Congrats to my AlmaMarter PaCIFica Mariners for making to the Quarter-Finals against a great team TH Hills. TH Hills wasn’t around when I played. May it be a great game for both the fans and the players. See ya there. Mariner 4 Life// CrunchBunch 4 Ever…………………..

Hey spisskyhrad I don’t know what game you were watching but the fouls were being committed by San Clemente. When you get beat 38-10 don’t blame the officials, blame your coaching staff. You could tell by the 3rd quarter that San Clemente was getting beat. The minute their quarterback did a slide to avoid getting hit 5 yards before the nearest defender, you knew this team was beat.

  • bob says:

anyone see the sophs in the sc-servite game? sc has an o lineman 6’6 240 soph

  • TH will be the home team in a match-up with Tustin if they play in the semi finals. After watching the TH fans at an away game against La Habra last year, I give TH the advantage over Wilkerson and company. I pick La Habra over TH in the finals in a real battle at Anaheim Stadium in December.

  • urkiddingright says:

eldo vs la habra baby!! great rematch of last year

  • Invictus says:

You’re delusional if you think big , estrablished, public school programs don’t recruit players to their schools, and I’m no MD fan.

  • Just a Fan says:

Invictus: is estrablished a word or is established spelled incorrectly? Good thing you have that Servite education huh?
