Looks like Lakewood is running away with it at halftime, 21-17. It must
be the speed is too much. Lakewood might find a way to win this one,
but they don't appear to be all that. Overrated!!!!, Overrated!!!! , Overrated!!!!

    • Curt says:

Yeah right. If we had Jerry Stone it would be Lakewood or Edison or Servite for the title. Oh, and Poly is killing Los Alamitos. Bad Karma for Coach Barnes. I hate to say it. Surprised that Wilson is hanging in there against Mission Viejo.

so many people post that dont really understand the game. i just came home from the lakewood game. lakewood was totally dominant, with regards to controlling the ball. but we havent really played a good team, yet - so i am on the fence as to how good we really are.

the opening kickoff was run back for a touchdown by newport harbor. on our very first play, we completed a pass, and fumbled on our 22. we stopped them, but they kicked a field goal. so they had 10 points, and no first downs, yet. we scored the next 21 points. they threw up a hail mary pass, badly underthrown. we had 3 guys around the ball and their receiver. the one defender is sitting waiting for the ball to come down. at the last second, he misjudges the ball, as he takes a step forward. his hands now reached up and back - the ball hits his finger tips, hops back in the air to the receiver, who runs 2 yards for a touchdown. 21-17 at half, but newport harbor really didnt earn any of their points.

in football, the golden rule is that he who controls the ball, wins the game. lakewood totally dominated the second half, and i left with about 5 minutes to go in the game. they added a touchdown as i was leaving, with the score about 40-17.

lakewood was a much superior football team. that being said, i have some problems with their team. number 3, who plays safety is bigger, faster, more explosive, harder to bring down, and a better runner than number 1, in every single way. yet, the entire first half they have number one as a lone tailback. and they kept running him. usually, lakewood, with their superb passer, throws the ball most of the time.

number 1 is simply not big enough, nor fast enough to be a real running threat. i dont know if number three is too tired to play fulltime running back, as well as safety.

the other big weakness is their kickoff game. i have never seen a kicker take one step and kick the ball. his kicks are always short, and low - so the receiving backs are catching the ball and running, getting a good jump all the time.

lakewood's pass receivers drop too many balls. number 19 is supposed to be an all league receiver. he does not have soft hands. i love to see him running the ball, but i cringe when he is back receiving punts.

lakewood's defense is fast and swarming. i have now seen them play against poly, millikan and newport harbor. their defense has totally dominated these three offenses.

our qb has gotten excellent protection in all 3 games. so i have yet to see how good our passing game is, if he has more consistent pressure applied against him. you simply can not give that good of a passer time to throw the ball.

i think our offense is more suspect than our defense. our defense seems extremely dominant, especially against the run.

      • JR says:

        FYI...

        #1 Terrance Woods
        #3 Rashad Wadood
        #19 Kevin Anderson

I will concur that the kicking game is an achilles' heel. Our kicker, Kelly Harpham doubles as an OL. Sometimes the best offense is a great defense. Jesse Scroggins (#15) going to have his work cut out for him against Bishop Amat.

        • jimmy says:

          hi jr,

i did not want to put names to my discussion, because i did not want to make it personal. just an evaluation of the football game, itself.

the other mistake that we made was to specifically have our qb run a lot. in the poly and millikan games, he only ran after he could not find anyone to throw to. and he put his knee down, promptly. the defense seemed to respect him, in that they never tried to hit him harder than needed. but that wont be true if they try running him a lot, on specific running plays.

it is simply a dumb thing to have him specifically running that many times. he is not fast, nor that good of a runner. and it places a much bigger risk on losing that golden arm. our receivers are not that good. our runners are not that good. but our qb has a cannon for an arm, and the offensive line allows him to go to sleep before he has to pass. we are simply a threat to make 10 yards every time we pass the ball. you simply dont risk that by running a joe namath type of qb.

our game plan for this game had been changed - much for the worse. we are not a running team. we are a passing team, that runs once in awhile, to keep things honest. a good defense would stop our running attack, if we try that first half strategy again.

if edison is as good as they are supposed to be, we cant afford the game plan mistakes that we made today, nor can we afford to make the stupid playing mistakes that we made today.

we have a lot of talent. but we also have some areas where we have weaknesses. i suspect, that because we are not an oc team, we are being under-rated, in the sense that i doubt if the writers have seen lakewood play as much as the top teams in oc.

i thought poly would get beat by los al. we totally dominated them. the score of 21-14 is not at all indicative of how much better we were. poly could not pass the ball. all they did all night was run left and run right. both of their scores were not results of them controlling the ball.

the fact that poly was able to take that sort of offense and beat los al the way they did, means only one thing - poly was bigger and stronger and able to control the line of scrimmage. it also tells me that lakewood's defense must be especially strong physically.

i was a sophomore when bishop amat beat lakewood in the cif final in 71. dont know if the 2 teams have played, since. they were big favorites with haden and mckay. but we had tereschuk, gillies, owens, heaton, and truck miller - very possibly the best team that lakewood has ever had.

but it has been so long, that i dont know if there will be any sense of rivalry from the current players.

btw, i like the red and white better than the red and black.

    • JR says:

Heh. We only cut it close with them at the half because of a lousy special teams blow-up at the beginning and a pre-Christmas exchange at the end. Good thing our guys knew that it's Nov. 20, not Dec. 25.

  • EHSWildman says:

8:40 left in the first half and Edison is up 41-0 over Millikan.

  • EHSWildman says:

42-0 Chargers with Pete Carroll in attendance.

  • EHSWildman says:

Just heard Wilson is up 14-7 over Mission Viejo with 4 minutes left in the half.

  • EHSWildman says:

    Edison 42 Millikan 7 @ the half.
MV 14 LB Wilson 14 @ the half.

    • Magillacutty says:

      EHSWildman,

Did you see where i misplaced my last post ?. Could it have ended
up in the Moderators circular file listed under my team is tied?

  • fielding says:

17-0 Servite over San Clemente... close to the half.

  • fielding says:

Check that... 17-3 at the half. SC hits a field goal to end the half.

  • EHSWildman says:

Hahahaha...my response must be in there with it and all I did was laugh.

  • Rob says:

Looks like St. Margaret's has a close game. Or is their coach just keeping it close so it doesn't look like he runs up the score on teams? Not that they've beat anyone by 70; that would be ridiculous.

  • EHSWildman says:

I don't think anyone is holding back, Santa Paula just showed up to play. Edison is going to have a hard time not running up the score on Millikan. Maybe the Chargers band can play the second half.

    • fielding says:

Edison has one heck of a team this year... unbelievable.

    • Paul Pappademos says:

Would like to know what happened to Harry's boys tonight? That's not like him to only put up 33 points to a SUB-PAR team!!!
How did Santa Paula stop St. Maggies?

  • EHSWildman says:

Anyone who doesn't think Edison has the number one defense in the PAC 5 is crazy.

  • fielding says:

Servite extends lead... 24-3 with 6:42 left in the third.

  • EHSWildman says:

Lakewood and Poly both move on to round two.

  • fielding says:

Friars add to lead... 31-3 with 3:56 left in the third.

  • ENCORE says:

In the PAC-5 I still like Bishop Amat, but look at Poly go against LosAl! In the SouthWest All the big dogs moving on. And it looks like the Mariners are against Fullerton. The Southern has Norwalk and my pick Laguna Hills rolling but Look at Santiago and LaMirada. I love this time of year YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thirtyplus says:

Laguna Hills was hitting on all cylinders, especially on defense. Granted, Estancia is by no means a powerhouse team. Even so, the Hawks were looking good.

Very poor turnout by the student body, however. (Lots of adult athletic supporters, though ) Especially for a home playoff game. C'mon Hawks. Support your team!

    • thevine says:

Segerstrom vs LHHS should be a great game in 2nd round. A year ago, who would of predicted Segerstrom over Mayfair. Believe it son its a fact now. Hope there are fireworks in this brewing baby rivalry between Segerstrom and Laguna Hills.

  • fielding says:

Servite trying to put it away... 38-3 with 8 minutes to go.

  • Larry says:

Just got back from the Cypress/Troy game. Muhammed had a couple hundred yards and 5 touchdowns again. He ran for a 52 yard touchdown and a 42 yard touchdown the 1st two times he touch the ball. Good game with El Toro coming up next week.

  • fielding says:

San Clemente strikes... 38-10... 3 minutes to go.

  • ENCORE says:

PaCIFica on to the second round again this year. Gooooooooo Mariners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dhhs75 says:

Congrats to the Dolphins!! 18 years since last playoff win. Edison next.

  • O.H. says:

Sunset league soooo overrated! 3 Sunset teams out (killed) and 2 South Coast teams move on. Cant believe they wasted the at large with Newport

  • thirtyplus says:

Looks like Mayfair/Segerstrom was quite a gunfight. Any first hand reports?

    Laguna Hills/Segerstrom rematch next week.

  • EHSWildman says:

Hahahaha...Sunset League overrated...guess we'll see about that next week. It'll be tough to say once DH loses to Edison again and ND beats MV the same way they beat FV tonight.

  • Hank says:

Dana Hills played an awesome game tonight! Lets go Dolphins lets take it to Edison!.

  • Magillacutty says:

In the end, no league will have 2 in the semi-finals. Edison appears
to be the class. The Sunset is incredible, Period, the end.

  • UHWarrior says:

Just got back from the La Habra game, what a blow-out. The second team played most of the second half. 56-10 Kennedy, was never in it. It was a good warm for El Do, next week. Hopefully, El Do, will challenge. La Habra's passing attack was deadly tonight, Clements now has 26 TD passes for the year. Quezada will be well rested for next week. LH has just too many weapons to stop.

Not too many surprises in round one, except for Los Al and Poly. I thought Los Al was going win this one. I also figured that Dana Hills would beat OLU but not by that much. Nice job by Mater Dei, keeping it close against a superior Bishop Amat team. MD will be back next year they're young. Disappointed with Freeway and Sunset leagues, only their league champs remain, whatsup with that!?

    • passnthru says:

............the Freeway Leauge went the way it should have gone Fullerton and Troy were not playoff worthy..........................along with about half the other playoff teams that got tromped...............

  • DAN ALBANO says:

I covered Mater Dei tonight - Monarchs played hard but game up just short

I will be interested to see the replay of the winning TD catch by with 38 seconds left

  • Just a Mom says:

GO CHARGER GO! Beat Dana Hills just like last time...

  • bzplayer says:

All 3 Seaview teams advanced to 2nd round!!! Huntington Bch will play Tustin next week w/o its starting running back/safety/middle linebacker. It'd be the biggest upset if they manage to win. Go Oilers!!!

  • tillerman says:

mater die loses again , i bet steve fryer still ranks them in the top 10. when is the register going to cover the better teams like tustin that has the most players in the NFL? another year mater dei is overrated. go tillers

  • spisskyhrad says:

2 years ago I watched a Mission Viejo pass bounce off the ground into the hands of the receiver. The referee called it a touchdown. Servite was the beneficiary of some of the worst referee work I have seen since that Mission Viejo San Clemente game.

The head referee was a disgrace!

    • anonymous says:

spisskyhrad, are you saying san clemente lost to bad refs? Or that Servite won because of the bad refs?

  • brownalum says:

Dana Hills are no longer the rich kids by the beach, they can play some football. Should be interesting to see if they have gained enough experience to give Edison a game on their home field.

  • Country says:

    - Nice win for the Tillers. The D delivered once again. Like to see the ball spread around on offense. Wilkerson carrying the ball 48 times and accounting for all but 16 yards isn't going to get us very far.

    - Great win for GG. 11-0. Hell, great wins for the 2 GGL schools. Rarely do they go beyond the 1st round. Keep it up.

    - What the hell happened to Los Al ? I really wanted that Los Al v. Servite game to happen.

    - Called that Pacifica win. Going by the box score. Looks like it was a great game that really picked up in the 4th.

    - Though Mayfair is down this year. Big win for Segerstrom.

  • DavidfromAnaheimhills says:

I attended the LB Poly/ Los Al game and it was not even close. It could have easily been 38-7 LB Poly. I hope that no team is over looking POLY because they looked great tonight. From what I read in the OC Register Los Alamitios was supposed to walk right through a sub par Poly team. well that Los Al team must be still be in the locker room at school.
Servite get ready for a different team next Friday. Because Los Al just gave Poly a big spoonful of confidence.

    • anonymous says:

Servite may have been ranked #3 in OC, but when you compare the same teams they played and the teams Dana Hills played, the scores are almost even. I think Servite v Dana Hills would be an excellent and close game.

They both played Edison, San Clemente, Orange Lutheran, and Santa Margarita. Almost identical results. Interesting.

  • DavidfromAnaheimhills says:

Readers can you tell me if you think Long Beach Poly has chance against SERVITE? Thank you for your comments

  • tillerman says:

this is no fun the mater dei fans dont check the blogs unless they win.what they should be doing is raising another 17 million dollars for a better practice facility because the one they have now is not getting the job done.the register gives way to much press for an average team two years in a row with four or more loses. bruce is burned out he needs to go.

    • Magillacutty says:

      Millerman,

Agreed. I'm just thankful M.D. was put out of their misery early so
the nauseum that be their bias could come to an end. Friar and Alblindo
tried to will them to victory, like the actor (r.i.p.) in the movie "Ghost" , willing himself to be seen by Demi Moore.
As far as Bruce ( Bobby Bowden) is concerned, He's done some great
things at M.D., but is it time to go?

  • dee ray says:

somebody might be drunk in tustin cause they dont play anyone but el do
