BOYS WATER POLO
Division I semifinals

El Toro 10, Loyola 9 (F) Sophomore lefty Joey Fuentes scored with 2.2 seconds left and El Toro has sunk the top-seeded and undefeated Loyola, 10-9, in roller-coaster semifinal. Loyola had some key shots hit off post late in the game and the Cubs did missed a penalty but ET’s Russell Renteria took over this game in the fourth.

Fuentes scored on a cross cage lob shot on the wing from about 6 meters coming out of a timeout. Gotta to believe Loyola was thinking about the R & R boys.

Loyola 9, El Toro 9 – Loy with ball 27 seconds left and about to come out of a timeout

- El Toro junior Russell Renteria has exploded for four goals in the fourth period and El Toro and Loyola are tied 9-9, with 2:05 left. RR has five goals.

- Russell Renteria scored the first two goals of the fourth but Loyola leads 9-8 with 2:40 left.

Loyola 7, El Toro 5 (3) Joey Fuentes scored on a nice pass from Joey Colton to get El Toro within one but Nikola Vavic scored on his second goal after a lineup and the Cubs extended their lead to two. El Toro is sending the extra player to offense a lot – mostly Russell R or Rascon

Loyola 6, El Toro 4 (halftime) Joey Colton and Nick Rascon blasted shots off the cage in the closing seconds. The biggest moment of the second period might have been when ET goalie Garrett Danner appeared to get his hand/fingers jammed on the cage making a save on a hard shot. Danner looked to be in major pain but has stayed in the game. If he is hurt – ET is really in trouble.

Danner has 9 saves, including a one-on-nobody in the second period to save a certain goal.

ET has no counterattack goals. The R & R Boys have combined for two goals. ET needs to get the ball to center quicker in the halfcourt and handle the ball better on the counter – though Loyola’s defense looks tough.

Update 1

El Toro 3, Loyola 3 (after 1) Loyola scored first two goals by Chargers came back with three straight. ET goalie Garrett Danner has five saves.

Intro

Player introductions have begun here at the John C. Argue Swim Stadium in L.A. for the Division I boys water polo semifinal between El Toro and Loyola. There are probably 350 spectators here at the pool, which rests in the shadows of Coliseum.

And the Coliseum rests in the shadows of Stanford.

  • wpolofan7 says:

I predict Loyola takes it 11-9. One of the most well rounded teams in SoCal along with Newport

  • terisa says:

    I like the updates!

  • ETVball09 says:

    Very Nice!!!

  • wpolofan7 says:

I’m slightly surprised that El Toro won. But congrats to them. I look forward to seeing them in the Finals against whoever wins the Newport CDM game.

  • Bob R. says:

I’m not surprised at all that El Toro won. Congratulations, Chargers. I’m sure Loyola is thankful it doesn’t have to come all the way down to Irvine for the final on Saturday night. Go El Toro!

  • Bob R response. says:

Let’s be nice Bob R. Loyola is more than welcome to attend the finals at Woollett. Hopefully this won’t interfere with Jovan Vavic’s USC practice or games.

  • OnlyTheFacts says:

Look for the finals to packed with college coaches. This weekend (Friday-Sunday) is the WWPA tournament at Chapman University. The WWPA = LMU, UCSD, Air Force, UC Davis, Santa Clara 9 (Div 1) and the Div III schools represented by Chapman, Pomona Pitzer and Whittier. In addition, the MPSF has winding down, so anticipate that coaches from that conference will be well represented.

  • Bob R. says:

Bob R, I sure don’t like the fact that our “signatures” are so much alike. I had not read any postings by you until recently. Any way you would consider using a different name so people won’t be confused? I’ve been blogging about water polo for a couple years now… Anyway, just a request. Thanks for consideration.

  • jlweath says:

Thanks Dan for the updates. I would of loved to have seen it in person. I am glad ET won – now on to the finals to see who will be their opponent.

  • Poloman says:

Are they going to webcast the CIF finals like they did last year? I have already forgotten the name of the service that did it last year any information would be great.

  • wpolofan7 says:

Didn’t a website called vootage webcast it live a few years ago? I think it was the year Los Al won Masters in 2007? It’d be great if they could do it again.

Thanks Dan for the updates. Keep up the great work!

Looks like it’ll be Newport, El Toro in the Finals. I predict El Toro will win a very close game with the way they’re playing right now.

  • cif?? says:

We’ve got to work on having unbiased announcers. He was working the Mich and then the crowd cheers during the breaks. OC made the drive to the game – close to half of the crowd. But no where near the masses assembled at Woollett.

  • DAN ALBANO says:

I personally thought Loyola came across intimidated/overly concerned with the venue choice but I liked the Argue facility. The crowd wasn’t very big for such a great game but I understand why Loyola made the pick.

On the other hand, the Newport and CdM kids got to play in front of 2,000 fans and that’s a pretty sweet reward for the players. That’s something they will remember.

Of course, Joey Fuentes will also remember those “Joey, Joey, Joey” chants, too

    • cif?? says:

Venue was great (notwithstanding the cage mishap) – historical setting of 1932 Olympics – in view of Coliseum – can’t beat that. No entrance charge.also a plus. Thanks John Borough for the hospitality.

      • John Borough says:

I’m honored to work at such a great facility and host top notch water polo like ET vs Loyola. My hat is off to you coach and Joey with the game winning lob shot; does not get more exciting than that! I need to get these photo’s to you, they came out fabulous!

        • ETAquatics says:

John – I echo the thoughts. Your venue was a perfect setting. Regardless of the win, a very memorable experience in such an historic site for our fans and athletes. Your generous nature was much appreciated by the El Toro fans.

  • MFuentes says:

“Of course, Joey Fuentes will also remember those “Joey, Joey, Joey” chants, too” I wish I could have been there! Thanks for the updates and the coverage! Sounds like it was a tough but awesome game. And, of course, go Joey!

  • Polo Mom says:

Good Job El Toro!!! Way to step it up and get the WIN! Great team work Keep it up!

  • JoeyFuentesFan says:

    Joey! Joey! Joey !
