Southern Division O.C. team analysis

football_blog3Here are the O.C. teams in the Southern Division:

Beckman (6-3-1): The Patriots have a good shot at beating Laguna Beach in the first round. Beckman and Laguna Beach have two  common opponents. Laguna Beach beat Costa Mesa, 49-34, and Beckman shut out Costa Mesa, 35-0. Beckman beat Corona del Mar, 20-14, and Laguna Beach lost to Corona del Mar, 65-34.

Costa Mesa (6-4): The Mustangs are the second-place team from the Orange Coast League and they will be underdogs against Santiago in the first round. Costa Mesa does have a pretty potent offense that averages 33.5 points per game.

Estancia (6-4): The Eagles are the third-place team from the Orange Coast League and will be huge underdogs against the defending Southern Division champion Laguna Hills Hawks in this battle of the birds.

Garden Grove (10-0): This might be the Argos’ best chance to win the school’s first CIF-SS championship. They are coming off a perfect regular season and are averaging 49.2 points on offense with a defense that’s giving up 5.4 points per game. Garden Grove has winnable games in the first two rounds before probably running into Norwalk or Irvine in the semifinals. Laguna Hills or La Mirada would be very tough potential games in the finals.

Irvine (7-3): The Vaqueros only losses came against Cypress and Kennedy, which qualified for the Southwest playoffs, and Laguna Hills, the No. 3 seed in the Southern. Irvine has a winnable game against Westminster in the first round and they would be live underdogs against Norwalk in the second round.

Laguna Beach (5-5): The Breakers went undefeated in the Orange Coast League to win their first league title since 2006, but the Orange Coast League would probably be considered the weakest in the Southern Division and they will underdogs against Beckman in the first round. If the Breakers do get past Beckman, they would face top-seeded Garden Grove in the second round.

Laguna Hills (8-2): The four-time defending Pacific Coast League champions are looking to repeat as Southern Division champions. The Hawks are averaging 38.0 points per game and the defense is holding opponents to 7.0 points per game. That physical brand of football that No. 3 Laguna Hills plays could have them in the winner’s circle once again. Laguna Hills’ toughest test could be against No. 2 La Mirada in the semifinals.

Rancho Alamitos (6-4): The Vaqueros will be big underdogs against No. 4 Norwalk in the first round, but Rancho Alamitos’ high-flying offense is averaging 32.4 points per game, which gives them a shot if they can turn the game into a shootout.  Vaqueros quarterback Mike Frank leads the county with 2,607 passing yards and 32 touchdowns.

Santa Ana (7-3): The Saints, the third-place team from the Golden West League, will be big underdogs against second-seeded La Mirada, which is averaging 41.6 points per game on offense and giving up 16.5 points per game.

Santiago (8-2): The Cavaliers own victories over Golden West League champion Segerstrom and Orange League champion Anaheim. The Cavaliers will be favorites against Costa Mesa in the first round, but they will be huge underdogs against No. 2 La Mirada in the second round.

Segerstrom (6-4): The Jaguars went undefeated in league to claim their first Golden Westy League title, but they drew a tough assignment in the first round going up against Mayfair. If Segerstrom does get past Mayfair, the Jaguars would be huge underdogs against No. 3 Laguna Hills in the second round.

Westminster (6-4): The Lions will be underdogs against Irvine in the first round, but Westminster did hang in there with top-seeded Garden Grove in a 9-0 loss in the season opener. Westminster’s other losses are to playoff-bound teams, so knocking off Irvine isn’t out of the question.

    Norwalk
    Garden Grove

    La Mirada
    Laguna Hills

    Semi Finals!!
I think Bellflower could beat Garden Grove, has grove seen any speed like that in the Burb?? Nope..

  • Interesting says:

Wow, looks like we may see a lot of rematches from earlier season games in the second round, some are long shots, but possible…

    GG/Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills/Segerstrom, Santa Ana/Costa Mesa

Grove has a great chance to get to the Semi’s this year, hope they take advantage and get to the ‘ship!

    Good Luck all!

  • Brett says:

I think Irvine has a great chance to make it to the semis. Teams are going to have a hard time defending Young, and they play great special teams.

    • PMaK says:

Sorry but they have to stop teams from scoring first..special teams is not as big as DEFENSE, can they contain the double wing this year cuz last year was a big NOPE!! sorry but its second round out for this irvine club..wow were they mad last year when little jose guzman was blocking 6’7″ Nick abele by himself..

  • Oz Dawg says:

As league champion, you’re guaranteed a home game against a third place team. That being said, Segerstrom got the toughest assignment out of all league champs, playing the third place team from probably the toughest league top to bottom in Southern Division. Doesn’t look too promising for Jags.

  • PMaK says:

    Norwalk running game:
    Jr. Elijhaa Penny 6’2 230
    Sr. Davion Edwards 5’11 260
    Sr. Adrian Gonzalez 5’7 180
    Jr. Billy Moore 5’10 185
All over 750 yards rushing, Gonzalez over 1,000 and Moore over 900

  • man says:

cool pmak…. remember when they could barely get a first down last year against laguna?

    • PeeWee says:

Do you not remember that Laguna Hills isn’t the same team as last year?? Well Norwalk is better than last years team..sorry

      • FB FAN says:

Norwalk is better then last year? So La Mirada is ten times better then last year? Bottom line you can’t beat a team that won’t give up, team’s like LM and Laguna Hills will keep pounding you until you give up! Just like you did against LM up by 19 and you get out scored 28-7 in the second half!!! I’m looking forward to the Championship game in the lower bracket LM vs. Laguna Hills! Oh and Segerstrom will beat Mayfair!

  • lil gag says:

segerstrom has what it takes to beat mayfair and give laguna hills a run for their money this mayfair team is not last years team and this segerstrom team is very talented

  • Dookie says:

I hate to admit this being a John Glenn alum, but Norwalk will pound the ball on you all day long. Don’t mean to throw a wet blanket on your big run this year Garden Grove, but Norwalk is huge this year, better than last year even, and faster.

    • nothing567 says:

the bigger you are the harder you fall

      • PeeWee says:

or the bigger you are the more rushing yards you have, take your pick..

      • Glen Chervin says:

Are you saying the size of the Laguna Hills line had nothing to do with
them going undefeated in league(2 years running) and winning a CIF championship last year? I thought it helped out a lot.

  • OCV says:

I hope Irvine is ready for Tarik Rayford…..
    Westminster ’bout to smash!!!!

  • uKNOWnada says:

@ocvetnmom , are you serious? LOL

@OCV, you remember how well you stopped Segerstrom’s run game? Oh wait, you didn’t…

Now imagine Irvine doing the same all over you…. no mohawk needed.

    • camacho12 says:

      uKNOWnada or whateverrr…

dont rate Westminsters defense on one game, that freshman is going againts a good Dline and vicious linebackers, and a astey hat likes to clean it all up. hope he can take some hits, because hes in for a beating friday night!!! and tarik rayford gonna blow up!!!!

  • Escalade says:

I Think The Lions Made A Statement With The W!!
There Here For A Fight, Jose Ortiz Is Going To Lead Them To A Win!!
    GO LIONS!!!

  • chill says:
