Here’s a quick look at what to watch for:
County teams remaining: No. 1 Newport Harbor; No. 2 Los Alamitos; Santa Margarita; Mater Dei; San Clemente; Edison
Tonight’s schedule: Click here
Best match of the night: Redondo at Santa Margarita. A rematch of the California Classic, won by the Eagles in five games. Will it be another thriller? Redondo is ranked No. 5 in the division poll. Santa Margarita is ranked No. 7. It should be a quarterfinal match, but they are meeting in the second round. The Eagles are used to postseason success at home, and the fans know how to fill the gym. Redondo looks to be playing well late in the season, falling in five games to Mira Costa in the final game of league. The Eagles enter the match having won 10 of 11.
Outlook: Newport Harbor gets to play its first match after an opening round bye, and should be able to handle West Torrance. Los Alamitos is going to have to fight Royal, and the long drive out to Simi Valley. That’s the longest trip of any county team in the division. However, the Griffins have enough experience to deal with it. The rest of the teams have big-time challenges ahead of them. San Clemente, Mater Dei and Edison all face higher-seeded opponents. The Monarchs might have the best shot of an upset, drawing a home match against Murrieta Valley. The Mater Dei boys team went on a postseason run, winning the coin flips as well.
