Sunset League
NO. 5 FOUNTAIN VALLEY (8-1, 3-1) VS. NO. 6 LOS ALAMITOS (7-2, 2-2)
Where, when: Veterans Stadium, Thursday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: Fountain Valley lost to Edison, 24-0, in the mighty Bell game last week. Los Alamitos won a wild one over Esperanza, 21-19. So, Los Alamitos has momentum going for it, and Fountain Valley must rebound from a big loss to its biggest rival. Fountain Valley does not have all the wild distractions that surround the “Battle for the Bell” (“Billy, this is Aunt Hilda. I can’t get tickets. Can you get me tickets?”) and can focus on getting ready for a big game. Rebuilding the Barons’ confidence is the chore for Coach John Shipp. Los Alamitos could be in a must-win situation. If Los Al loses, it goes to 2-3 in league and will be left to hope for the Pac-5 Division’s at-large berth. This is a matchup of two outstanding, All-County types of running backs, Kyle Middlebrooks of Fountain Valley (averaging 158 rushing yards a game) and Nick Richardson of Los Alamitos (174 a game). Los Al has a great defense, but Fountain Valley’s is good enough, too. It could be a very close game …

The OCVarsity football challenge
Hey Fryer hows it going in OC? We are already into our 2nd play-off game here in Vegas. I coach at PaloVerde HS. Would love to play a Pac-5 team someday. Any way Edison and Fountian Valley are back. Now if only Elmodena and VillaPark can get back on top all would be just how I left the Greatest High School teams in the Land.
Steve- I'm picking Los Al just because their defense is the best in the OC. Los Al is desperate, andRichardson is good back. I think Los Al rises to the occassion on this one and hands FV back to back loses.
FV will rebound from there lost to Edison which won the game out right. No excusses but i'll tell you one thing, Middlebrooks will touch the ball more then he did last week. They are not going out like that. Who knows , they could meet up again with Edison.
I'll take Los Alamitos. They have a better defense and can score enough points against Fountain Valley's defense to win.
Taking Los Al in this one. Both lost to Edison, but I think Los Al has the strength here.
If both teams play up to their ability, IMO FV has to have some kind of advantage with Ragland's experience and mobility. At the same time I think Richardson can be every bit as dangerous as KM. Perhaps it will come down to one determining factor...defense.
If Los Al plays as well as it did all year on D except vs. Newport they win. I doubt FV scores 21 with their D/special teams like Edison did, so in battle of exceptional RB's Los Al wins & gets playoff birth sans coin flip.
Two very evenly matched teams. A slight advantage to the Los Al "D" but the edge in experience goes to Fountain Valley at the QB and RB positions. It will come down to turnovers and penalties as field position will be crucial.
fv/los al is going to be great game i agree with griffinfan.shipp needs to get kly outside for some sweeps, pass ball more to steadman.less blitzs with steadman, need him back there on defense.need fv fans show up like the edison game.GO BARONSSSS
The problem with FV is the coaching has been terrible since the 80's. They are notorious for bad decisions. So even if they have the personnel the coaching always sabotages the talent. Shipp is one of the worst coaches in OC.
I completely disagree with wall street loser, FV has been better than ever because of Shipp. Barons win 28-17!!!!!
