No. 4 Dana Hills (8-1, 4-0) vs. No. 2 Mission Viejo (9-0, 4-0)
Friday, 7 p.m. at Mission Viejo High

Outlook: The South Coast League title is on the line as the Dolphins visit the Diablos on Homecoming Night. The Diablos have won the past 10 meetings between the teams.

The task at hand is to either slow down the Diablos’ offense or try to outscore them. How difficult has that been? Mission Viejo is averaging 46.1 points a game and is giving up 8.1 points a game.

Mission Viejo has scored 185 points in its previous three games. The numbers are astounding. The Diablos have been “held” under 40 points twice this season (Loyola and Capistrano Valley).

Even more mind-blowing is the way the Diablos attack — nonstop from the first period to the fourth.

A lot of talk has been on the defense, and deservedly so, but the Mission Viejo offensive line needs to get some credit, as well. The group (Mike Criste, Austin Sodaro, Alec Davis, Mike Aguirre, Patrick Webster) has been doing a spectacular job.

If the Dolphins are to spoil the party, then their running game will be the difference. Brandon Howe (691 yards), Cole Altuzarra (555), Chris Kearney (300) have combined to rush for 1,546 yards.

Quarterback Josh Dean has rushed for 275 yards, along with passing for 1,351 and 13 touchdowns.

The offense is going to have to find ways to keep drives moving, convert on third downs, throw in some trick plays, whatever it takes … the league title is on the line!!!

Can Dana Hills get it done? Can anybody slow Mission Viejo?

  • Well i went to the coin-flip to decide on which game i would attend this week and luckily i used a 2 sided coin cuz brother this is the game of the week for sure…..How good is this squad from MV, and how good is this squad from DH……..my gut tells me the history and tradition is the way to go, and im going with my gut Mission Viejo is #2 for a reason and rapidily closing in on #1 they show the County how good they areand i predict they run the table and go un-defeated aint no team in OC a solid in every facet of the game and it shows as they mow over Dana Hills, a very good Dana Hills team but no match for one of the best in MV long history….MV42 Dana Hills 17, and i will be a bit surprised if Dana can put 17 on the board against this MV defense if they do it will be in garbage time!!

This is the first Top Ten team Mission Viejo has played all season. The others have been easy. Should be a good game.

Dana will lead at half-time. They have super strong momentum going into every game. Fortunately, they are well-conditioned and can go strong the entire game. These boys are like well-oiled machines. They just keep going and going and going. Thanks to a great Coach and his regime.
