November 9th, 2009, 8:51 am · · posted by

football_blog11. Edison (9-0 record)

2. Mission Viejo (9-0)

3. Servite (8-1)

4. Dana Hills (8-1)

5. Fountain Valley (8-1)

6. Los Alamitos (7-2)

7. La Habra (8-1)

8. Orange Lutheran (5-4)

9. Mater Dei (5-4)

10. Tustin (8-1)

Newport Harbor almost gets that No. 10 vote … I moved La Habra up; I think the Clan could beat OLu and Mater Dei, if RB Josh Quezada is healthy for La Habra … Fountain Valley by just a little over Los Al; they play each other this week.

11-09-09: This weeks’ OC top 10 and Fryer’s teams 11-25

Football: Albano’s Top 10 vote

Football: Eichelberger’s Top 10 vote

la habra first test in a while passing game should get win 31-14

  • I agree with the rankings if Quesada is healthy. La Habra has had the opportunity to open up their game the past couple of weeks without their strong running game. This should make them more mature and more of a threat to their future opponents.

Still dont like nor understand how you can actually vote not 1 but 2 teams in top ten with 4 losses……………just doesnt seem fair nor right to snubb so many other 1 loos an/or undefeated solid football clubs in the OC…………..when if ever or what will it take to move up winners and set down losers……….5 losses???? in a a 11-12 game schedule???cmon Fryer your better than that use your imagination??

bighsfootballfan, When I was younger I really didnt understand it all either. It was until the lower Div team that I liked started schedulingthose Div 1 teams and was losing to them, that I started to understand.

Even in Div 1 there are two tiers of teams.
whatishisname every week came in here and wanted his JSerra team to be in the top 10 and ahead of MD. JSerra at 6-0 with their first ever win against a Pac 5 team, could not understand why Steve didnt have them over the 3-3 MD team at least.

Just because you can beat lower division teams, does not mean you can win in the Pac 5 (Div 1). Steve and everyone else knew what was going to happen when that “great record” actually had to play a team worthy of being placed in the top 10. Outcome, MD 45 – JSerra 7.

Remember the County Top 10 is a top 10 of all teams and all divisions. Sometimes you have to look past the record when one team is playing teams that most likely would beat everyone on your schedule, including you. If that team should lose 1, 2, or 3 of those games, there is no reason to believe your team would not have lost to them also.

It is not until a lower Div team plays 4 or 5 upper Div teams in their schedule (and wins the majority of those games) that they will ever be able to say I belong in the grouping of Upper Div teams.

No one is arguing the point that there are many teams that have great records and are solid teams. It is that the teams you play, are not at the same level of play that the top teams are playing, win or lose.

Well put Tiger and I concur, heck even the Gorilla would be proud how grammaticaly correct you are with concise understandable context. Cudos to you!

LOL thanx LOL, hewwww, glad I didnt lose ya there. Sometimes I get lost just going to the next word, little alone grammatically correct understandable context.

  • The Guild says:

Please allow me to address those that are confused by the ranking of teams with more losses than others and try some different perspective. If your team is in a lower division that historically competes against like teams, then the perception is that your team doesn’t desire or feels that there is no gain in scheduling upper division competition. That is a major distinction between a Cypress, El DEorado, and others in that realm. LaHabra, Tustin and a couple of other lower division teams do schedule an OL or a Los AL, NH and reap the benefit in a few ways. They experience the energy level and size and speed of these upper division ranked teams and it proves to help them later when league games start.
If you are a big fish in a small pond and then get thrown in to a bigger pond with plenty of other big fish that have been surviving in that pond for a long time, you will have to prove yourself on a daily basis.
MD and OL schedule every top team they can and schools like Oaks Christian deny them and Servite the opportunity. If you desire to be considered in the same light as the top ranked teams, then you must play the same quality of competition.
The bottom line is that lower division teams, with few exceptions, can compete with the big dogs and would get beat. Case in point, MD in a very off year, still beats an exceptional Cypress squad and LaHabra competes, but gets beat by LA. Tustin, though w/o Wilkerson, lost to OL and so it goes for the lower division teams. You must have the courage to schedule and compete with the best to get the recognition you seek.
It’s a dog eat dog world in hs football and some teams are wearing milk bone uniforms!

i dont agree eeeeee wayyyy!!! i think elmodena should be #1 yeah yeah !!!! wee will beat edison and all the other teams on the list…..get at me son

  • HSFOOTBALLFAN says:

they should have a top ten for teams that recruit and a top ten for those who dont.Until that happens teams that do not recruit will have to work harder and schedule teams that do and beat them in order to have respect in OC top ten. Each Div has a name but some people refer to them as lower div maybe some people should refer to that certain div as the stack your team div.Its no use to get caught up in oc rankings just root hard for your team until they change the R system peace

    • Greendog says:

What do consider to be recruiting? Is a school in a district with open enrollment considered to recruit? Or do mean the private schools. Some of the schools “recruit” more then others. MV uses their agricultural program to get players from other schools in their district. Technically it is against CIF rules for anyone to “recruit”, however it does go on. In my experience it is a programs’ boosters that recruit. I have only seen coaches from 1 program recruit, and it was not a private school. However players do go to better football programs if they have a choice most of the time. That is why I have so much respect for coaches at public schools that have built good programs.

  • SoCalNative says:

The CIF playoffs will be very embarrasing to the top 10 prognosticators, because it will be then that Mission Viejo either beats Edison or advances further than Edison does in the playoffs. Edison does not have the talent, team speed (both sides of the ball), discipline, flawless execution or aggressive team play that Mission Viejo has. After watching both teams play, it is obvious that Mission Viejo is by far the better team. So either the top 10 voters have not seen Mission Viejo play or they are obviously biased in their selection, no matter, they will be embarrased in the CIF playoffs, because as the saying goes, action speaks and BS walks. So Albano, Fryer and Calhoun get ready to start walking.

    • Greendog says:

What team did MV play when you saw them and who did Edison play when you saw them? The South Coast is weak this year as Tesoro and SC are down. Dana is a good team so let’s see how they play against them this week. The Sunset is a deep league again as it has been the last 3 years, since the last league restructuring. You are right about the fact that we will get to have all questions answered when the playoffs start after this week. You are also right that Edison is not perfect, but they keep finding a way to beat good teams in a variety of ways. It would be great if they play each other in the playoffs!!

  • Glen Chervin says:

    Steve,
It took a while but you finally flip flopped 4 and 5.
On a neutral field I give O Lu the edge over La Habra.

  • I have no problem with OL being ahead of La Habra. They are a D-1 school; but I think it would be a even match if they played on a neutral field during post season. La Habra is a post season team!

  • HSFOOTBALLFAN says:

Greendog very good response you are a true HS Football fan. Good Boosters and relentles good coaching is the right receipe to build a solid program and I to have much respect for coaches at public schools who have built great programs, it brings alot of pride to the community that they play in.

  • Spencer says:

I’m just wondering how Garden Grove HS isn’t in the top 10 being undefeated and Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran ARE in the top 10 with 4 losses? Is it because MD and OL are bigger name football programs? Hardly seems fair.
