Girls tennis playoffs: Division I at a glance

girls_tennis_iconA look into the Division I tournament draw:

Top seeds: No. 1 Dana Hills; No. 2 Campbell Hall; No. 3 Palos Verdes; No. 4 Corona del Mar

Best first-round matchup: There are no shortages of county-county matches, but the contest that has the most intrigue I think is Laguna Beach-Brentwood. The Breakers are the No. 1 team from the Orange Coast. Brentwood is the No. 3 team from the Olympic League, which features Campbell Hall and CAMS, both of which are ranked in division’s top 10.

Other story lines: There are fun all-county matches in the first round, including San Clemente-Santa Margarita, Beckman-Woodbridge, Northwood-Sunny Hills and Troy-Mater Dei. A team to watch is University. The Trojans almost upset Dana Hills and Corona del Mar this season. University is scheduled to meet Palos Verdes in the quarterfinals. Palos Verdes beat Uni 11-7 earlier this season. Dana Hills and Corona del Mar didn’t meet this year in the regular season, and would meet in the semifinals if form holds.

Defending champion: Dana Hills. The Dolphins have taken home the championship the past two seasons. They are undefeated this year and begin the playoffs as the favorite.
