O.C. football playoff picture coming into focus

November 6th, 2009, 1:26 am · 16 Comments · posted by CARLOS ARIAS

football_blogIt all came down to Friday night's action as teams were battling for league championships and playoff berths.

Whittier Christian was one of many teams that had to win their regular-season finale to get in the playoffs. The Heralds knocked off Village Christian to take third place in the Olympic League and earn an automatic playoff berth.

First thing you need to know about the playoffs is who gets the guaranteed playoff berths. Four-team leagues are guaranteed two entries, five- or six-team leagues are guaranteed three entries and seven- or eight-team leagues are guaranteed four entries.

If your team isn't one of those lucky squads with a guaranteed ticket punched to the playoffs, you can still get into the postseason with an at-large berth. At-large teams must have a .500 record or better for their complete schedules to be considered. If there are no .500 teams entered as at-large entries, the next best record as submitted by leagues will be taken. However, no team under .500 will be placed until all .500 at-large entries have been placed.

Here are the criteria for at-large entries: 1. Head-to-head competition of teams under consideration (4 points); 2. Overall strength of the league from which the team is entered (1 point); 3. Overall win-loss record (1 point); 4. Strength against common opponents (1 point); 5. Strength of schedule (2 points, using overall win-loss record of opponents).

At-large entry forms must be in the CIF-SS office by 9 a.m. on Nov. 14. Every few years a team forgets to get its at-large entry form in on time. It's tragic. Don't be that team that doesn't take care of its paperwork.

The Football At-Large Selection Committee for 11-Man football divisions will meet on Nov. 14 at the CIF-SS office to determine the at-large berths.

Pairings will be announced Sunday, and we'll have them as soon as they're available on ocvarsity.com. Plus, we'll have analysis, breakdowns of the divisions and much more.

I shoved all relevant data into the OCVarsity Super Computer and here is what it spit out. Click on the links to go to each league's information:

It's difficult to appreciate even the consideration of any team being #1 seed based on point spreads. Think about how that would encourage coaches to
runs scores up in the future. Think about how running up scores would impact opponents (victims of the run up). What about the opportunities for 2nd, 3rd or even 4th string players to get in games? The game is about the kids and the more that can be included without compromising competitive
      intensity, the better.

Steve, there is a situation where in the Serra, Loyola could finish in 3rd place but have a losing record, and Crespi could finish in 4th place but be 5-5, does that mean Crespi still could qualify?

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

at 5-5 Crespi would be eligible to petition for the Pac-5's lone at-large berth.

    • The Guild says:

If they do indeed get that berth...look out! These guys are playoff tested and will be even more by then, if they win out in the Serra. I doubt a one and out scenerio.

  • Missing says:

    Carlos,

do you know the rules for how they set up the brackets such as 1 and 3's in league being in the same side and so forth?

  • Dave says:

The 1st and 2nd place team from a league have to be placed on opposite sides of the bracket and can't play each other until the finals.

The 1st and 3rd place teams or 2nd and 3rd place teams from a league can be in the same bracket but teams from the same league cannot play until the semis.

  • Notso says:

    Carlos,
What about Whittier Christian. The winner of their game with Village Christian qualifies for the final spot in the Olympic league
