Girls volleyball: Tuesday’s recap

girls_volleyball_blog6As the final week of the league season continues throughout the county, here is a look at some of Tuesday’s action.

 

 

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Newport Harbor 3, Marina 1: Katey Thompson produced a team-high 19 kills for the Sailors (23-6; 8-1) who defeated the Vikings in four sets 25-15, 21-25, 25-15, 25-15 at Newport Harbor High.

Edison 3, Fountain Valley 0: The Chargers clinched third place in league with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-15 sweep of the Barons at Fountain Valley High.

 

In the Century League:

No. 3 El Dorado 3, Tustin 0: With Andrea McHugh putting down 20 kills and Gracee Gallarda passing out 32 assists, the host Golden Hawks (26-6, 9-0) continued their perfect run through league with a 25-9, 25-12, 25-18 sweep of the Tillers.

 

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 5 Corona del Mar 3, San Juan Hills 0: Claire Ham and Morgan Boukather each had 10 kills to guide the Sea Kings (21-4, 9-0) past the Stallions 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 at Corona del Mar High. Madison Smith added 29 assists for Corona del Mar, who can clinch the league title outright with a home victory over Beckman Thursday.

Beckman 3, University 0: Lydia Bai had 24 kills and 14 digs, while Nina Stenlund added 10 kills, as the Patriots (23-6, 8-1) swept the Trojans 26-24, 25-21, 25-22 at Beckman High.

Laguna Hills 3, Irvine 2: Hannah Hjelmstrom had 14 kills, while Kelli Martinez served six aces, as the Hawks (7-16, 1-8) won their first league match of the season, slipping past the Vaqueros in five 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-8 at Laguna Hills High.

 

In the Freeway League:

No. 6 Troy 3, Buena Park 0: Si-Si Hensley had nine kills, as the Warriors (22-3, 9-0) moved a step closer to an undefeated league season with a 25-4, 25-4, 25-7 victory over the Coyotes at Troy High.

 

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 3, Huntington Beach 2: After forging a two-set advantage, the host Chargers (16-10, 6-3) held off the Oilers (13-11, 6-3) to win in five sets 25-21, 25-12, 21-25, 19-25, 15-7. Christina Bauch led El Toro with 25 kills, while Jenna Anderson dished out 49 assists. Ally Torline led Huntington Beach with 17 kills and eight blocks. Both teams are now tied for first place with one game remaining Thursday.

Woodbridge 3, Trabuco Hills 0: Lauren Cimiro and Sara McCutchan combined for 23 kills, as the Warriors swept the Mustangs 27-25, 25-22, 25-23 at Woodbridge High.

Northwood 3, Foothill 2: Behind 26 kills from Kelsey Groot, the third place Timberwolves held off the Knights in five sets 17-25, 25-13, 25-15, 15-25, 15-9 at Foothill High.

 

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 3, Sage Hill 1: Behind the trio of Savannah Holte, Jordan Hopper, and Erika Page, who combined for 39 kills, the Tartans knocked off the Lightning 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17 at Sage Hill High.

 

Nonleague:

Mira Costa 3, No. 7 Laguna Beach 0: Despite 15 kills from Paulette Grand Pre, 25 assists from Allison Palmer, and 11 digs from Chanel Stewart, the Breakers (13-9) were swept at home by the Mustangs (22-7) 25-18, 25-20, 25-22.

    Beckman was expected to be a powerhouse. The girls at Uni as you can see from the scores kept it very close and exciting.

    The Uni girls did an excellent job.
