The Calhoun Six: Games to Watch
BONUS GAME
Westminster (5-3, 3-0) vs. Segerstrom (4-4, 3-0)
Friday, 7 p.m. at Segerstrom High
Outlook: Westminster has dominated the Golden West League in recent years, winning the past five titles. Westminster hasn’t lost a league game since 2003. Is this the year these streaks come to an end?
Westminster has won the previous three meetings against Segerstrom. The first two meetings were one-sided. Last season, it took an amazing performance by Westminster’s Aaron Garbutt (rushing for 216 yards, four touchdowns and he also passed for a touchdown) in a 33-28 victory. It was a Superman performance.
What will it take this year?
Westminster came into league play on a two game losing streak, but has rebounded with victories over Ocean View, Santa Ana and Saddleback since the start of league.
The key has been the performance of running back Jose Ortiz. Ortiz has rushed for 534 yards and eight touchdowns in three league games.
Segerstrom started the season 1-4, but has rallied to get back to .500 overall with victories over Saddleback, Ocean View and Orange.
Aaron Amrine (478 rushing yards) and Matt Navarro (471) and Justin Mills (408) are key to the Jaguar offense. The trio has scored 23 touchdowns.
Will Westminster be able to slow down this group?
Will the Lions still be king of the Golden West League?
