No. 16 Cypress (7-1, 3-0) vs. No. 24 Pacifica (4-3-1, 3-0)
Thursday, 7 p.m. at Handel Stadium

Outlook: The top spot in the Empire League will be up for grabs when these two get together. Cypress is on a six-game winning streak since a 21-16 loss to Mater Dei back in Week 2. During the streak, Cypress is averaging 47.6 points a game.

Akeelie Muhammad has posted rushing performances of 182, 241, 288 and 330 in four of those games. He is tied for the county lead in touchdowns (26) and is second in the county in rushing (1,463).

Will Pacifica be able to stop him?

The Mariners, under coach Marcello Giuliano, have improved since a slow beginning. Pacifica opened the season with a 1-3-1 record, against opponents who are currently 28-10-2.

Since league has started, Pacifica has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 117-27.

Luther Tolbert, Cody Johnson and Joel Willis have rushed for 1,160 yards. Quarterback Mario Nava has completed 101 of 166 passes (60.8 percent) for 1,310 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Are we headed for a shootout?

  • UHWarrior says:

Pacifica is alot better than their record indicates as stated by Calhoun. I agree. Cypress has been playing weak opponents so far and Pacifica may shock them. But I think Cypress is still the class of the Empire league and win this one, and next week against Kennedy.
Cypress has alot to prove to the rest of the Southwest CIF division this year not just in their league. Cypress is on a mission to prove they can compete with the best of the Southwest, Pacifica will be a speed bump on the road to the playoffs. This will be a shoot out.

    Cypress 45- Pacifica 35

  • i think you are right UHWarrior. this will be closer than people think. these next two games are good games to have going into what should be a very intense playoffs.

    LINE SIX!!

  • bighsfootballfan says:

Both teams are good but thats it whoever wins this game is not gonna challenge for the rings so its just another good league game for this league..Cypress/Pacificia…..does it really matter i will take Pacificia 21-20

  • L6 FAN says:

I gotta disagree on that one. I think Cypress will start a fire in the playoffs. Not saying we are as good as La Habra by any means, but we might be. You just never know. And honestly, luck weird things happen during Cypress games. Almost magic I would say. Nobody can explain it, but when Cypress is down, the ball always seems to take a bounce our way. Look for Cypress to compete in the playoffs. Don’t count us out just yet. The game tomorrow will tell a lot.

  • bighsfootballfan says:

Game tommorrow wont tell much except who is league champion…….both these teams ar ok.not great but ok..they will battle each other but neither one has a legit shot at at least 5 other Southwest football clubs just dont have the talent…..heart maybe but def not the talent so if ya big on heart which i applaud alot of them Cypress fans are well give em hell and on ward and upward……….

    • whatshisname says:

I think you guys are selling them short. when you say they dont have legit shot as top 5. it looks like you counting fullerton in that 5, and I dont see it. have any of us other than warrior by his own admission seen these gtuys play?I would venture not. fullerton will be a 6th seed at best after next weeks game with clan and will be overwelmed in 2nd round of their braket. cypress will give it theyr all against el toro in 2nd round and may just get what they wished for with semi against clan, and then they can say good night.against pacifica theyre playing against a coach who true mariners have to be wondering if he will even be around next year.

    • Tyler says:

I think this division belongs to three teams, not five: La Habra, Tustin and Trabuco Hills. Everyone else is a dropoff, and Cypress and Pacifica can play with anyone else.

  • Tyler says:

It’s not that Pacifica started slowly. It’s that they played a very difficult non-league schedule under a new head coach. Playing El Dorado, Norwalk, California and JSerra steeled this team. Cypress has played a very weak schedule, Mater Dei aside. I think they have a very good team, but you can’t tell a lot from their record.

I think this could be a classic, like the two 2007 meetings, but I don’t expect either team to do a lot in the playoffs. The Empire League was too tough for the Southern Division but isn’t good enough for the Southwest Division.

    • whatshisname says:

you might be on to something here tyler. maybe the 5 thru10 in cif pairings is a crap shoot at best.based on pacifica tie with eldo and fullertons loss to same the top 3 favorites look solid. My guess is eltoro vs cypress in 2nd rnd and eldo vs the beach, and Im hoping trab is in tustins side of brackets because a la habra trab rematch would be a classic and could land the winner in to a state game, hoping of course.

  • revenrico says:

I CAN TELL BY THESE POST THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE HERE CAN SEE THE HOLE PIC//YOU NEED TO WATCH THESE TEAMS ON THE FIELD!!AND I HAVE..CYP///AND PAC..ARE REAL REAL GOOD BUT CYPRESS IS BETTER AND BOTH TEAM HAVE A GOOD CHANCE TO GO FOR THE RING..IT WASN’T TOO LONG AGO THAT EVERY ONE SAID CYPRESS NO WAY !!WHO CAME HOME WITH THE RING CYPRESS..AND IT LOOKS LIKE WERE GONE FOR ANOTHER ONE GO LINE SIX,,,AND GOOD LUCK PAC/YOU SHOULD BE THERE TO

  • Seen em both, just a little better than average teams if you compare them to the powerhouse teams in this division……. a shot at a Ring……No way partner La Habra beats em by 30, Tustin would do the same, Trabuco Hills the same, and at least 2 other teams beat either one of these teams by 14……..

    • revenrico says:

I DON’T KNOW WHAT WORLD YOUR IN RIGHT NOW I GUESS THAT LA HABRA,TUSTIN,AND TRABUCO ARE YOUR DREAM TEAMS BUT THATS OK EVERY ONE HAS A DREAM BUT WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE REAL DEAL…THIS YEAR IT’S A OPEN FIELD LAST YEAR EVERY ONE SAID LA HABRA NO WAY WHAT HAPPENED????IT’S A OPEN FIELD PARTNER…L6
