A day after earning its 11th consecutive Pacific Coast League girls tennis championship, No. 2 Corona del Mar faced No. 5 Laguna Beach on Wednesday in each team’s final nonleague match of the season.
The Sea Kings captured all nine doubles sets and defeated the Breakers, 15-3, in windy conditions at Corona del Mar High. Corona del Mar (16-1, 8-0) closes league with San Juan Hills (Thursday) and No. 9 Beckman (Monday). Laguna Beach (11-6, 7-0) plays its final Orange Coast contest against Costa Mesa on Thursday.
“These are the windiest courts in Orange County,” Sea Kings coach Brian Ricker said. “It happens here at CdM. Today the wind was crazy.”
Hailey Hogan won both sets at No. 1 singles before being subbed out. It included a 6-4 victory over the Breakers No. 1 singles player Madeline Jaeger. Jaeger rebounded to win her two remaining sets 6-0, 6-0. Taylor Nederlander won one set at No. 2 singles for the Breakers third point.
The Sea Kings’ No. 1 doubles team of Kelli Feeley and Azadeh Nazemi improved to 25-1 before being substituted for in the final round.
“That’s the second day in a row we swept doubles,” Ricker said.
