NO. 8 MATER DEI (3-4, 0-2) VS. JSERRA (6-1, 1-1)

Where, when: Saddleback College, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: I knew it was coming. As soon as it landed on OCVarsity.com Monday afternoon that Mater Dei, with a sub-.500 record and winless in league, was still in the county top 10, people were going to flip out. So here we have Mater Dei with its record against JSerra with its record.

Mater Dei lost to Servite last week, and is going to be fired up to take it out on somebody. Mater Dei also is in a must-win situation to stay in the playoff hunt in the Trinity League. A loss in this game, or against Santa Margarita or St. John Bosco in the following weeks, likely keeps Mater Dei even out of at-large berth contention. JSerra is getting better, as its record and its first Trinity victory, over Santa Margarita, two weeks ago, proves. So does its close, 23-14 loss to Orange Lutheran last week. But this is a bad week to be playing Mater Dei. A 3-4 team is going to beat a 6-1 team, and the wisdom of the rankings shall prevail.

Winner: Mater Dei.

Frankly Fryer: Valencia vs. Kennedy

Frankly Fryer: San Clemente vs. Tesoro

Frankly Fryer: Fountain Valley vs. Newport Harbor

Frankly Fryer: Villa Park vs. El Dorado

Frankly Fryer: Orange vs. Segerstrom

Frankly Fryer: Los Alamitos vs. Edison

Don't be too sure of yourself Mr. Fryer!

This is not a Mater Dei team of previous years!

  • anonymous says:

If Mater Dei loses, send them down to #22 in the rankings. Make them earn their way back up. Seriously, we need to stop coddling them in the Top 10 rankings!

  • bighsfootballfan says:

"The wisdom of the rankings"......If the Monarchs do win this game and its not like they are playing a team who is a top-ten team, they are playing a solid JSerra club that isnt a powerhouse you know that, what you seem not to know is that you made a blunder in ranking a 3-4 team winless in league at #7, so dont call this wisdom if Mater Dei wins, call it covering yourself for your blunder.....geez Fryer you could at least of dropped em to 10 and made this case but 7????? Mater Dei confirms the wisdom of fryer and wins and next week will be #5 in the County because well Frankly fryer i dont know why but im sure you will conjure up some more wisdom to justify it!! Mater Dei by 14 her folks..........

  • Steve Fryer says:

Keep in mind the top 10 is a poll of 10 media members -- it is not the Fryer Top 10 ... I did keep MD among my top 10, sure, because I doubt anyone below MD could beat MD. Simple as that.

There was a lot of griping, on comments and in my email, about MD being in the top 10.

    • Matt Johnson says:

You just like to love ur mater dei because they are ur favorite team and u don't think any of the other teams are good. Remember Tesoro last year. U thought they were bad and what did they do to ur Mater Dei. They beat them

    • whatshisname says:

are you sure about that? they pulle out a desperation win over cypress, remember? and cypress is below the teams that are below mater dei . if you account for the fact that every body gets better as season goes along barring no injuries then your way off steve and every body can say your a homer. the teams in top 10 below monarchs would win hands down. and like Ive siad before this is not the bcs so no speculation should be part of your process, yheyre 3-4 for gods sake give it arest.

      • The Guild says:

Hey "whatchama" , your thinkin too much again! My friend, until there is some type of round robin, in which all teams play each other (never happen) the ratings will have an element of speculation. We're all entitled to have opinions and speculate and agree to disagree.
I happen to agree with Steve on the MD rating issue and we'll see how it plays out.

  • Steve Fryer says:

Sure, I underestimated Tesoro last year.
Whatshisname -- Hey, if I am wrong, not the first time nor the last!

  • UHWarrior says:

Steve- your top 10 ranking, is just that YOUR top 10 ranking, it is what it is. If we, as readers, don't agree, so be it. More power to you.

JSerra has more to prove and lose in this game than MD. If there is any a time for JS to beat MD it's now. I'm picking JS in a squeeker 28-27.

MD is young team and I think next year they'll be opening a "can of whoop-ass" on the rest of league. But.....that's next year.

  • The Guild says:

"wathchama", we pride in the education that we received and you are or you're not....."your" not!

  • tondizzle85 says:

Well, watching the Monarchs lose last week was hard to see. Hopefully the loss against Servite will help them take their mind off keeping the streak alive and winning a CIF championship, which should be their ultimate goal. It will be an uphill climb like no other, but I think they can do it.
